Time to start your bikes up and find out what went wrong with them over the winter. I say that because with me, something on at least one bike goes bad over the winter. Like the fuel fittings on the Triumph that never leaked before. But as I turned on the petcocks they leaked like a torpedoed tanker, they somehow had loosened themselves at least a full turn of the com- pression nut over the winter! How did that happen? Or hop on a bike; pull the clutch or brake lever and the cable breaks! Was I that close to disaster last fall? On an old bike I expect some problems with the first start of the year, the carbs may be a little balky at first and batteries may go dead but that’s normal. How does the timing get so far off and the voltage regulator go bad with no use over the winter? I’m beginning to think something is going on here. Sitting here pondering these facts for a few days it suddenly came to me! The spirits of the old engineers and designers are haunting us, trying to tell us something! But what are they saying? That stuff is going to happen anyway whether you ride the thing or not! So you might as well ride it between problems because that’s what they designed them for! It’s amazing what pops into your head when you have a little free time and a couple beers. But seriously I do think those old guy’s would be smiling down on us whenever they see their creations back on the road. A couple things I need to say about the spring show. We are preparing for our big show at the state Fair grounds on June 10-11. Sean, Tom and the crews are working hard to put on the best show and swap meet we’ve ever had. When you see them be sure to thank them for their efforts, they and the volunteers spend a lot of time and effort on our behalf. They can always use help for the set up and take down, so if you have extra time Thurs. or Fri. for set up or Sun. afternoon for take down I’m sure they would appreciate any help offered. We need bikes for display! Our members have some great bikes, of all kinds and eras that people want to see, so let’s get them out. The swap meet has been growing every year so let’s get the show growing too. I know it can be a hassle to bring a bike to the show but the bikes are the reason we have a show. I know I like it when people ooh and aah over one of my bikes. We all do. So let’s put on a show that’ll knock everyone’s socks off! I know we can do it! See you June 10-11, and keep the rubber side down. EDITOR’S NOTE By Tim Gadban Well I recently lost another close friend (this time to a heart attack) and my friends are starting to drop around me as I head for the finish line! I belong to a demographic that is heading north of 65 years and am very grateful for the gift of each passing day. Which ties in to my experience of riding motorcycles. There is a sort of Zen awareness cultivated by riding .... a keen exhilaration which in turn creates a greater appreciation of life and the humans I am close to. As a member of the Viking Chapter I feel privi- leged to associate with and share time with some incredibly smart and talented people …. not to mention some bent humor and healthy attitudes. I have never experienced a boring event, run or road trip with my compadres and I look forward to our club events … unless of course it’s snowing or 105 degrees … yes that happens! Speaking of events, we are about to host our National Meet (June 10-11) at the State Fairgrounds … an annual celebration of all things two wheeled and vintage. As Gary says above … there’s nothing like all the ooh-ing and aah-ing that we hear around the old bikes. There is some kind of space-time continuum that stretches back to our younger days and runs through the memories of riding and sharing those times together. At age sixteen I bought a used BSA 250cc C12 and it’s all been in the rear view mirror since then. Although there was a hiatus for a few years (with a young family) I have never lost that passion and desire. As most of you I’ve been through quite a few bikes (wish I still had some of the old ones!) and still that lust for different motorcycles will not go away. I’m holding steady at four bikes now with a space (and marital) constraint of “one in - one out!” So as we sail on through 2016, the summer and fall beckon us with lots of club rides and events … and a steadily growing list of new members. We now have Viking Chapter apparel to offer to our members … shirts, patches and caps. These are featured on page 11, with an order form on page 12. In closing I would like to sound like a broken record and request motorcycle stories from members …. that is my favorite material for the newsletter.
