Taxonomic identifications are central to biological assessment; thus, documenting and reporting uncertainty associated with identifications is critical. The presumption that comparable results would be obtained, regardless of which or how many taxonomists were used to identify samples, lies at the core of any assessment. As part of a national survey of streams, 741 benthic macroinvertebrate samples were collected throughout the eastern USA, subsampled in laboratories to ;500 organisms/sample, and sent to taxonomists for identification and enumeration. Primary identifications were done by 25 taxonomists in 8 laboratories. For each laboratory, ;10% of the samples were randomly selected for quality control (QC) reidentification and sent to an independent taxonomist in a separate laboratory (total n ¼ 74), and the 2 sets of results were compared directly. The results of the sample-based comparisons were summarized as % taxonomic disagreement (PTD) and % difference in enumeration (PDE). Across the set of QC samples, mean values of PTD and PDE were ;21 and 2.6%, respectively. -

For the first time on the south of the Russian Far East, in small cool spring- like streams of the Low Amur River Basin, viviparity or live-bearing reproduction of stone- flies Capnia khingana (Plecoptera: Capniidae) was recorded. Apparently, the development of nymphs in eggs takes more than two months. Mature embryos were found throughout the abdomen, thorax, and head of C. khingana females, their number varied from 178 to 124. The first-instar nymphs hatched inside female body and exiting under the genital plate had head capsule with apparent eyespots, thorax, abdomen, legs, cerci and antennae. The lengths of the firs-instar nymphs varied from 910.33 to 920.35 μm, and the width of the head capsule, from 161.85 to 171.13 μm. After a short discussion of the taxonomy of the adult Leuctridae of Eastern Canada, the nymphs of the eight most common species are described and a key for their identification is proposed. The female and larva of P. extensa are described for the first time. The larvae of P. spinata and P. turbinata are described for the first time. The chaetotaxy of the larval forms of western North American Parapsyche is discussed and scanning electron micrographs are presented. Keys to the females, known pupae, and larvae are provided. Giberson Abstract: We examined the life history and production of the Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera, and Trichoptera (EPT) commu- nity along a 500-m stretch of a hydrologically stable cold springbrook in Prince Edward Island during 1997 and 1998. Six mayfly species (Ephemeroptera), 6 stonefly species (Plecoptera), and 11 caddisfly species (Trichoptera) were collected from benthic and emergence samples from five sites in Balsam Hollow Brook. Eleven species were abundant enough for life-history and production analysis: Baetis tricaudatus, Cinygmula subaequalis, Epeorus (Iron) fragilis,andEpeorus (Iron) pleuralis (Ephemeroptera), Paracapnia angulata, Sweltsa naica, Leuctra ferruginea, Amphinemura nigritta,and Nemoura trispinosa (Plecoptera), and Parapsyche apicalis and Rhyacophila brunnea (Trichoptera). Life-cycle timing of EPT taxa in Balsam Hollow Brook was generally similar to other literature reports, but several species showed extended emergence periods when compared with other studies, suggesting a reduction in synchronization of life-cycle timing, pos- sibly as a result of the thermal patterns in the stream. Total EPT secondary production (June 1997 to May 1998) was 2.74–2.80 g·m–2·year–1 dry mass (size-frequency method). Mayflies were dominant, with a production rate of 2.2 g·m–2·year–1 dry mass, followed by caddisflies at 0.41 g·m–2·year–1 dry mass, and stoneflies at 0.19 g·m–2·year–1 dry mass. -

Overview and descriptions of fossil stoneflies (Plecoptera) in Baltic amber 85 Entomologie heute 22 (2010): 85-97 Overview and Descriptions of Fossil Stoneflies (Plecoptera) in Baltic Amber Übersicht und Beschreibungen von fossilen Steinfliegen (Plecoptera) im Baltischen Bernstein CELESTINE CARUSO & WILFRIED WICHARD Summary: Three new fossil species of stoneflies (Plecoptera: Nemouridae and Leuctridae) from Eocene Baltic amber are being described: Zealeuctra cornuta n. sp., Lednia zilli n. sp., and Podmosta attenuata n. sp.. Extant species of these three genera are found in Eastern Asia and in the Nearctic region. It is very probably that the genera must have been widely spread across the northern hemisphere in the Cretaceous period, before Europe was an archipelago in Eocene. The current state of knowledge about the seventeen Plecoptera species of Baltic amber is shortly presented. Due to discovered homonymies, the following nomenclatural corrections are proposed: Leuctra fusca Pictet, 1856 in Leuctra electrofusca Caruso & Wichard, 2010 and Nemoura affinis Berendt, 1856 in Nemoura electroaffinis Caruso & Wichard, 2010. Rezente Arten der drei Gattungen sind in Ostasien und in der nearktischen Region nachgewiesen. Sehr wahrscheinlich breiteten sich die Gattungen in der Krei- dezeit über die nördliche Hemisphäre aus, noch bevor Europa im Eozän ein Archipel war. Der gegenwärtige Kenntnisstand über die siebzehn Plecoptera Arten des Baltischen Bernsteins wird kurz dargelegt. Wegen bestehender Homonymien werden folgende nomenklatorische Korrekturen vorgenommen: Leuctra fusca Pictet, 1856 in Leuctra electrofusca Caruso & Wichard, 2010 und Nemoura affinis Berendt, 1856 in Nemoura electroaffinis Caruso & Wichard, 2010. -

Adults were present at all times of the year. Species number varied from an autumnal low of 2 to a spring peak of 13. Adults of most species were present for less than 3 months, but Malenka depressa adults were present year‐round. Hesperoperla hoguei was the only strictly autumnal‐emerging species. The report of Suwallia dubia from Irish Gulch Creek represents a new California record. The stonefly faunas of Irish Gulch Creek (low coastal) and Sagehen Creek (high Sierra Nevada) were compared. Both creeks had similar numbers of species, but the species composition differed greatly, reflecting dissimilar environments (elevation, water temperature, thermal accumulation, and discharge). Irish Gulch Creek had uniform warmer temperatures; Sagehen Creek had variable colder temperatures. Peak emergence at Irish Gulch Creek occurred 2 months earlier than at Sagehen Creek. They are almost exclusively aquatic in their larval stages and metamorphose to the adult stage in the terrestrial habitat. The aquatic larvae use silk to construct cases in which they reside or to spin silken nets to capture food suspended in the water column. Some caddisfly larvae are caseless. The adults, with their body and wings covered with fine hairs, are crepuscular and resemble small moths. Larvae are important components of aquatic food webs. Most are intolerant of pollution and serve as biological indicators of water quality. They have great advantages and disadvantages in economic terms. The economic benefits obtained from caddisflies include uses such as water quality indicators, nutrition in the human diet, jewelry, and forensic entomology. Even though caddisflies provide many positive ecological and economic benefits, a few species have negative effects. They cause damage to rice crops, pose traffic hazards, and cause allergic reactions. This review provides an overview of the ecological and economic importance of aquatic insects of the Trichoptera order. In addition, research on the Trichoptera order in Thailand are presented.
