Monetary Authority of Singapore Establishes Professorship in Economics and Finance at National University of Singapore

SINGAPORE, 16 July 2009... The Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) has established a professorship in economics and finance at the National University of Singapore (NUS) with an annual gift for the next five years, commencing 2009.

2. The professorship will be named the Monetary Authority of Singapore Term Professorship in Economics and Finance and will be a joint appointment at the NUS Business School and the Department of Economics in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.

3. Mr Ong Chong Tee, Deputy Managing Director, MAS, said MAS is committed to encouraging relevant research into economic and finance issues at universities as a way of contributing to the policy making process and meeting the needs of industry.

4. “We are pleased to partner NUS in this pioneer endeavour to establish a Professorship in Economics and Finance. We are confident that this programme will energise research and strengthen collaboration between academia, industry and the public sector,” said Mr Ong.

5. Professor , NUS Deputy President (Academic Affairs) and Provost, said the gift will bolster efforts by the University to attract top-calibre professors from around the world and offer students a transformative learning experience.

6. “We are very grateful to MAS for this gift to establish a professorship at NUS. MAS’ generous act will enable the University to work with world renowned scholars who will help take teaching and research in finance and economics at NUS to even greater heights,” said Prof Tan.

7. “Furthermore, the gift will create more opportunities for collaboration between NUS and MAS, ensuring that cutting-edge research produced by NUS Business School and the Department of Economics remains relevant to industry and policy,” Prof Tan added.

8. MAS’ gift will also strengthen Singapore’s financial and economic research infrastructure, by creating a vibrant research community and culture at local universities.
