Hughley, comes to the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts’ Merriam Theater Friday, May 11, 2018 to film his new comedy special D.L. Hughley: Contrarian. Don’t miss this opportunity to join D.L. for one of the two live tapings at 7:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. Hughley, one of the most iconic stand-up comedians and actors out there, has produced multiple hits on various networks including ABC, NBC, HBO, and CNN, and can be heard daily on Philadelphia’s 100.3 WRNB-FM radio in the afternoons. “D.L. Hughley’s career has been non-stop since first emerging onto the scene with his own sitcom, The Hughleys, and continuing to lend his creative and comedic approach to news, drama, and comedy across many channels,” said Anne Ewers, President and CEO of the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts. “This season has been and continues to be jam packed with comedy across our entire Campus as we showcase a variety of different acts that keep our audiences laughing and longing to come back for more.” D.L. Hughley is one of the most popular and highly recognized standup comedians on the road today who has also made quite an impression in the television and radio arena. Most recently, D.L. served as host of his own late night talk show on CNN, D.L. Hughley Breaks the News. In addition, he starred in NBC’s Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, hosted the BET hidden camera reality series S.O.B. Socially Offensive Behavior, starred in his own HBO comedy special entitled Unapologetic, and hosted HBO’s Def Comedy Jam as well as the BET Awards in 2008. Hughley spent four successful years starring in his own sitcom The Hughleys, and showed no signs of slowing down. It was the mega-hit The Original Kings of Comedy that launched D.L. into superstardom. The film, based on the 1999 tour featuring D.L., Bernie Mac, Steve Harvey, and Cedric the Entertainer, garnered close to $40 million at the box office and became one of the highest selling DVDs in 2001. D.L. continues his reign on the stand-up comedy front, selling out concert halls and headlining comedy clubs across the country.     Walter Latham Often referred to as "The King of Comedy,” Walter Latham is grateful for the humble upbringing and everyday challenges that shaped his early life, and instilled in him a fierce passion that led to his success as a business mogul and humanitarian. Born to a single mother in East New York, Brooklyn, Latham soon found himself in a similar situation, becoming a father at the young age of 18, and struggling to get by with odd jobs and a brief stint in the United States Air Force. At 20, he caught a break with a permanent position at the American Express Call Center in Greensboro, NC and was thrilled to finally provide healthcare for his son, even though he knew he was bound for something greater. Inspiration soon struck Latham, after attending a performance by his childhood friend, MC Lyte, when he realized his calling was to produce concerts. He borrowed money from his mother and produced his first concert in a nightclub. The headline act didn’t show and Latham had to refund the patrons their money but what he learned from this unfortunate experience would change his path forever. Latham decided to produce more concerts but mitigate his losses by soliciting sponsorships. He wrote and mailed 50 letters to various corporations about promoting a southeast tour with the hottest comedians. When Coors Brewing Company expressed interest, Latham soon found himself, at age 21, standing in a boardroom of top executives pitching his comedy idea. His first comedy tour featured Chris Tucker and Bill Bellamy and Coors was so impressed they asked Latham to do another.

As a stand-up comic, television and film actor, director, musician, and game show host, Cedric Kyles has built a career around making people laugh. Known as Cedric the Entertainer, the 52-year-old Missouri native gained national prominence in 1992 when he appeared on the HBO comedy series Def Comedy Jam. Four years later, he landed his first acting role on The Steve Harvey Show. Since then, he has appeared in dozens of movies, including Barbershop and Barbershop 2: Back in Business, and the animated films Ice Age and Madagascar. She ended by telling the assembled audience of SAG Awards nominees and presenters, "Tonight is dedicated to the art and craft of acting by the people who should know about it: actors. And remember, you're one too!" Thus began a tradition of the Screen Actors Guild Awards opening with a distinguished actor telling the audience a bit about his/her perceptions of their craft or some brief biographical anecdote. For the first eight years of the SAG Awards, that tradition was carried on by a single actor each year, with Michael Keaton, Dennis Hopper, John Lithgow, Kathy Bates, Whoopi Goldberg, James Woods and Sir Ian McKellen following chronologically in Lansbury's footsteps. The concept was so well received that for the 9th Annual SAG Awards, supervising producer Gloria Fujita O'Brien suggested a new twist on the tradition. By having actors tell shorter stories, it would allow room for actors of all ages and backgrounds to tell tales with many different emotional tones.
