  • The Vision of a Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao
HARVARD DESIGN SCHOOL THE VISION OF A GUGGENHEIM MUSEUM IN BILBAO In a March 31, 1999 article, the Washington Post? posed the following question: "Can a single building bring a whole city back to life? More precisely, can a single modern building designed for an abandoned shipyard by a laid-back California architect breath new economic and cultural life into a decaying industri- al city in the Spanish rust belt?" Still, the issues addressed by the article illustrate only a small part of the multifaceted Guggenheim Museum of Bilbao. A thorough study of how this building was conceived and made reveals equally significant aspects such as getting the best from the design architect, the master handling of the project by an inexperienced owner, the pivotal role of the executive architect-project man- ager, the dependence on local expertise for construction, the transformation of the architectural profession by information technology, the budgeting and scheduling of an unprecedented project without sufficient information. By studying these issues, the greater question can be asked: "Can the success of the Guggenheim museum be repeated?" 1 Museum Puts Bilbao Back on Spain’s Economic and Cultural Maps T.R. Reid; The Washington Post; Mar 31, 1999; pg. A.16 Graduate student Stefanos Skylakakis prepared this case under the supervision of Professor Spiro N. Pollalis as the basis for class discussion rather to illustrate effective or ineffective handling of an administrative situation, a design process or a design itself. Read, Ph. D., Dean, Graduate School May, 2013 i Abstract A centenarian Basque soccer club, Athletic Club (Bilbao) is the ethnographic locus of this dissertation. From a center of the Industrial Revolution, a major European port of capitalism and the birthplace of Basque nationalism and political violence, Bilbao turned into a post-Fordist paradigm of globalization and gentrification. Beyond traditional axes of identification that create social divisions, what unites Basques in Bizkaia province is a soccer team with a philosophy unique in the world of professional sports: Athletic only recruits local Basque players. Playing local becomes an important source of subjectivization and collective identity in one of the best soccer leagues (Spanish) of the most globalized game of the world. This dissertation takes soccer for a cultural performance that reveals relevant anthropological and sociological information about Bilbao, the province of Bizkaia, and the Basques. Early in the twentieth century, soccer was established as the hegemonic sports culture in Spain and in the Basque Country; it has become a multi- billion business, and it serves as a powerful political apparatus and symbolic capital.

It is fresh and verdant, it has gushing rivers and a coastline more reminiscent of Scotland than Spain. The weather is cool often misty and the land is impregnated with an age-old magical atmosphere, which travelers can share in cathedrals, castles, Dolmens & Hill-forts. You may even hear Galician bagpipes (Gaitas) droning across the pasture. Galicia is in the north-western corner of Spain. It is the most forgotten of the seven Celtic nations. Even so, it has some of the oldest Celtic traditions, going back more that 2000 years. Ancient Galicia´s borders were much different than today´s, they stretched into neighboring provinces of Asturias, Leon, Zamora, Salamanca, Avila, and down into the Green Coast of Northern Portugal. The stone and water crazy Galicians have equals in their Celtic brothers of Brittany, Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Isle of Man and Cornwall. Traveling in Galicia, one can sense this Celtic feeling coming back from the ancient times.
