THE KLONDIKE SUN WEDNESDAY, MARCH 7, 2012 P5 Letter to the Editor: Special Presentations Highlight KVA AGM

You cannot expect planning professionals or Yukon of anyone who has worked harder or longer, or done residents to accept such a change in planning principles after seven years of plan development. You have lost an enormous amount of goodwill and credibility by taking this route. 3. Energy, Mines and Resources Minister Brad Cathers inferred (on CBC radio) that only a minority of Yukoners take the position of “not allowing mining activity in that area.” I’m sure you are aware that 87 per cent of respondents to the most recent round of consultations on the Peel plan wanted more than 80 per cent of the watershed protected. I assume you are also aware of the independent DataPath Systems report that confirmed three-quarters of Yukoners supported protection of 80 per cent of the planning region, as outlined in the recommended plan. Here’s the link pdfto that survey report: http://www.cpawyukon. org/peel-watershed/2009-peel-survey-results. . I obviously don’t need to remind you that the affected First Nations requested total protection for the entire planning region. To see what should be a respectful and inclusive government continually seek to discredit and disengage those involved in the plan’s development, the affected First Nations and the residents you purportedly serve, makes me ashamed to be a Yukoner. I trust you, your department and government will now endorse the wishes of the majority (including your First Nation government partners) by acknowledging and adopting the final recommended plan. Failure to do so will only serve to undermine Jim Taggart democracy and your government’s credibility. The Sun obtained funding in late 2009 from the City of Dawson, YTG’s Heritage Branch and the Community Development Fund to conserve and archive early issues and make them available once again in the public domain. This is a great resource for students, writers and historians, and also for prospective tourists with an interest in Dawson City’s life. Each month, we are re-printing our front pages from 20 years ago (seen above) as a souvenir of our lively history. Past issues are available for download on our website, http://klondikesun.com. The Spruce Grouse, , is the most Daycare Delight common grouse found in our forests. They measure about 41 cm (16”) from beak to tail, with a rather chunky body. Males of Story & Photo by Dan Davidson the species have a black throat and breast edged in white; and red eye combs, which they erect during courtship display. Both males and females are mottled brown, black and white with chestnut coloured tips on their tail feathers. Although the Spruce Grouse is sometimes called the “fool’s hen” because they are so unafraid of humans, Robert Frisch notes that the male’s courtship display is carefully hidden and rarely observed. During mating season (April – May), males will fan out their tails and puff up the feathers on their neck and breast, raising their red eye combs and rapidly beating their wings, producing a snapping sound, to the delight of the females. Like all grouse, the Spruce Grouse doesn’t fly far. They are a non-migratory bird, living year-round in spruce forests. Their main food source comes from the spruce tree: in winter, they live almost exclusively off of spruce needles and buds. They build their nests on the ground, usually at the base of a spruce tree, lining the nest with dried grasses and leaves. It is my personal observation that no matter how shrilly my dog may bark at a Spruce Grouse in a tree, the grouse will not As City of Dawson crews and contractors pile up the snow for removal, the kids from the daycare be persuaded to come down.
