The purpose of this report is to provide a distribution research tool for independent film professionals. This double-issue Cannes => Toronto Report provides detailed sales activity on 2,258 film acquisitions that transpired in Q2 and Q3 of 2013. Most of the sales activity detailed within is months from being updated on IMDbPro, Cinando et al. While the information provided in this report represents the most comprehensive resource for tracking the latest film distribution activity available, it does not contain every sale within the period. As the capabilities and sources of FilmTake expand, so will the depth and breath of future reports. The full package consists of three parts: 1. 100-page Cannes => Toronto Report includes data and findings on 2,258 territorial acquisitions over the past six months, market analysis by geographical region and distribution news, including output deals, financing arrangements and notable acquisitions (this document). 2. 138-page Film Supplement provides details on 205 films, including Logline, Genre, Director, Cast, International Sales Agency, Buyer, Stage and Ter r itor y. 3. Cannes => Toronto Workbook is a MS Excel workbook containing the raw data on all 2,258 acquisitions sortable for personalized research and analysis. page 4 Background The 2013 Cannes Market Report was published in August 2013, containing sales activity on 673 film buys covering 117 films between 58 international sales agencies and 314 distributors. The response to the report outperformed expectations in both the number of reports sold and in the amount of information contributed by sales agents, distributors and producers. However, more than 98% of these sales were on completed titles. The two titles that presold were Scorpion in Love and Two Days, One Night. Lionsgate had a very strong six months with 127 sales detailed in this report. Of the 127 sales detailed nearly half, 67, were presales for major titles including: Hunger Games, The Last Witch Hunter, Reawakening, John Wick and Step Up 5. The Canadian giant indicated to shareholders they made 250m worth of sales during Cannes. FilmNation reported third overall with 108 sales, more than half were presales for self/less, Solace, and The Imitation Game. Voltage Pictures logged 91 sales, most recent were presales on Eden and hot titles Dallas Buyer’s Club, Don Jon and The Grand Seduction. The Match Factory reported an impressive 87 sales in the period - perhaps the most diverse slate of any sales agent. The Lunchbox was a big title at Cannes for the Cologne sales agent. Night Moves moved at TIFF and they continue to prove they are one of the best, handling challenging material with multiple sales on the Greek film Alps. Memento Film reported 89 sales on market notable films such as Blue Ruin, Ilo Ilo, The Past, which scored a multi-territory deal with Sony Pictures Classics, and the horror title We Are What We Are, which went to Entertainment One in all English-speaking territories, France and Scandinavia. At Cannes, Exclusive Media introduced its only presale title reporting Pelé. Exclusive Media had 67 sales overall including Rush, The Green Inferno, Parkland, Can a Song Save Your Life? and Therese, which went to Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions in a multi-territory deal. Passengers, also handled by Exclusive Media, starring Keanu Reeves and Reese Witherspoon Rachel McAdams, prompted The Weinstein Company to double-down (Man of Tai Chi) on Keanu Reeves and pickup US rights for the Sci-Fi drama. page 10 All the Sierra/Affinity deals reporting were on presales, including most recently Nightcrawler, The Coup, How to Catch a Monster, Heat, and The Vatican Tapes also recorded brisk business. At Cannes, IM Global and Martin Scorsese scored 22 sales on the upcoming Silence. Good Universe registered sales on Candy Store. Panorama Media excited buyers with genre-bending Pride And Prejudice And Zombies. Nu Image introduced Survivors and Voltage touted Testament. Notable U.S. Acquisitions Two of the biggest deals over the last six months included Universal’s worldwide rights deal for Bad Words at a $7m price tag. Not to be outdone, The Weinstein Company picking up Can a Song Save Your Life? also for $7m. At Cannes TWC acquired US, Canadian and Spanish rights on Philomena for 6.5m, a high watermark at the market. Also by the numbers, CBS Films picked up The F Word for $2.75m, Millennium Entertainment acquired the John Turturro helmed Fading Gigolo for $3m, Horns went to Dimension for $3m and Blood Ties went to Lionsgate / Roadshow Attractions for $2m. Magnolia Pictures took home The Sacrament from TIFF for $1.3m, and Sony Pictures Classics acquired The Past at Cannes for $1m. Music-related films were hot at Cannes. Focus Features presold the Amy Winehouse documentary to 15 territories. Open Road picked up domestic rights to the Gregg Allman project based on the book of the same name - My Cross to Bear. Mark Damon’s Foresight Unlimited was in town with Justin Timberlake preselling Spinning Gold about a 1970’s music mogul, Neil Bogart. Exclusive Media registered sales on Metallica - Through the Never. The Exchange sold domestic rights of CBGB to XLrator. page 11 Output Deals IM Global IM Global and Impuls Pictures signed an output deal covering Switzerland. Universum Film, a subsidiary of RTL, have committed to distributing the sales agency’s wares in Germany and Austria. They recently signed with To p F i l m who will distribute in the Baltic States, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Former- Yugoslavia, Hungary, Poland and Russia/CIS. Sun Distribution also became output partner for Latin America. IM Global is looking to emulate the output strategies of Lionsgate and Relativity Media with great success. With the backing of Reliance Group of India since 2010, they are best positioned among all international sales agencies to join the ranks of mini-major in the coming years. Mister Smith Entertainment Mister Smith Entertainment, which represents DreamWorks titles in Europe, inked multiple output deals including with Metropolitan for France, Inter-Film in Ukraine and a multi-territory arrangement with MediaPro covering Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Hungary and Slovakia. These add to recent deals with Constantin Film for Germany, Austria and Switzerland, Entertainment One for the U.K and Benelux, Nordisk Film for Scandinavia and Italia Film in the Middle East. Relativity Media Relativity Media added to their 30 worldwide output partners with Tanweer in India and Feel Good in Greece. Relativity International also introduced Mojave and The Man On Carrion Road at Cannes starting a two-film deal with Atlas Independent, a Los Angles-based production company.
