BRICKFIELDS KUALA LUMPUR’S LITTLE INDIA

The area of Brickfields can be said to have risen as a result from the aftermath of a major flooding in Kuala Lumpur followed by the great Kuala Lumpur fire in 1881. The series of disasters destroyed the town’s structures of wood and thatching or atap. Mr Frank Swettenham, the British Resident of then decreed that all buildings be constructed of bricks and tiles. Hence an area was developed for setting up the clay brick industry to help spur the rebuilding of Kuala Lumpur. This area and the industry gave rise to the name it is known to this very day: Brickfields.

Brickfields was also used as the site of the main depot for the Malayan Railway (Keretapi Tanah Melayu or KTM). The British brought in people from Sri Lanka to work at the railways and many lived here in KTM quarters. Since then the Indian community grew and subsequently became citizens of Malaysia. Some of the old quarters can still be found today along Jalan Rozario. The Depot has now been transformed into Kuala Lumpur’s modern railway hub in the city – the KL SENTRAL.

With this history, it is only fitting that Brickfields is also known as Kuala Lumpur’s Little India. There are numerous shops owned by Indian businessmen, including spice shops, grocery outlets, sweet and snacks shops, textile shops, goldsmiths, hotels and plenty of restaurants or food stalls. Brickfields is popular for its Indian food especially the banana leaf rice and thosai (Indian pancake made of fermented rice flour)

Places of interest to visit in Brickfields: • The Temple of Fine Arts • The Vivekenanda Ashram • The Sri Kandaswamy Temple • Maha Vihara Buddhist Temple

How to get there:

From the Majestic Hotel Kuala Lumpur: Hop on the Majestic Sentral Line and drop off at the KL Sentral. From KL Sentral, walk through the Nu Sentral Mall, towards the monorail station. Brickfields is situated across the Monorail walkway bridge.

From Hotel Stripes Kuala Lumpur: Hop on the Monorail from the Medan Tunku station and get off at the KL Sentral Monorail station. Brickfields is opposite the Nu Sentral Mall. SHELL MALAYSIA MOTORCYCLE GRAND PRIX 2017
