It displays the atmosphere of the old Chinese village combining two distinctive cultural elements of China and Sundanese. The market segment of this attraction is mostly from muslim domestic tourists who is interested to taste the culinary attraction. While traditionally Chinese food is considered non-halal by the muslims, but it is becoming one of the attraction of this place. This study was conducted to review whether the culinary attraction is truly muslim friendly or halal compliant. The research method is using qualitative approach. Data collection is done by field observation and interview with the manager, food tenants, and visitors. The result showed that Chinatown culinary attraction potentially become halal tourism in Bandung. There are 7 of 31 food sellers have obtained official halal certificate. Dietary Acculturation among Russian Immigrants in Beijing Author: Ekaterina Maiorova Supervisor: Marina Svensson Master’s Programme in Asian Studies Spring semester 2012 Abstract Emerging multiculturalism in China's metropolitan areas implies people's frequent engagement in intercultural contacts and, therefore, creates a need for a mutual acculturation between the migrants and the host society. This research aimed to contribute to the study of immigrant adjustment in China by exploring the patterns of dietary acculturation among Russian immigrants residing in Beijing. The research was framed as an explorative qualitative case study, and employed Berry’s acculturation model as a theoretical basis. This model draws on the dichotomy between ethnic identification and acculturation in order to distinguish four strategies of acculturation: assimilation, separation, integration and marginalization. Acculturation strategies framework was applied to food preferences of Russian immigrants in three food-related contexts: everyday consumption, preparation, and New Year celebration. As a result, integration was defined as a predominant acculturation strategy of the group. However, it was also revealed that the patterns of dietary acculturation altered considerably depending on the context of consumption. Overall, the findings of the study demonstrated a complex, dynamic, and multidimensional nature of the acculturative processes. Keywords: dietary

Such direct interaction with the rest of the Muslim world has shaped how Hui- Muslims in China understand, imagine, and articulate their Islamic identity through nationalism, modernity, and Chinese state sovereignty. This dissertation asks how what I term the “transnationally modern” – that is, the imagined and experienced connections between China and the rest of the world that have emerged since China’s “opening up” in 1978 – is complicit in producing particular forms of Hui-Muslim religious “authenticity” in China. How, after decades of isolation, do Muslims in China legitimate their versions of Islam? I delve into this question by comparing two groups of Hui-Muslims in Yunnan Province: the urban, secular elite in the provincial capital Kunming, and the rural, religious elite in the Muslim enclave of Shadian. I examine how Muslims in each of these communities reconstructed their religious “authenticity” after the turmoil of the Cultural Revolution. In particular, I show how their proximity to urban centers of power and their embeddedness in dominant capitalist modes of production shaped the kinds of ethno-religious authenticity they produced.

    Bienvenue à Nanjing! It is once again that time of year when we welcome newcomers to our city, complete with a guidebook to Nanjing several inches thick by their side. Please put it away now! Within our pages you will discover many of Nanjing’s lesser-known secrets. Some of you will find yourselves living in unpronounceable places such as Xianlin and Jiangning. Beginning in this issue we recognise the growing importance of the two suburbs with their own dedicated map, along with another for the area of the city around the Olympic Centre (pages 62-63). Chinese people are very active in public life, even if this “public” consists of three spectators. We have all seen some (what we would describe as) shocking examples of human life made public, often in a hospital. However, Chinese people are used to there always being a lot of people around. As we delve into the issue of leisure activities in China witness the unsuccessful attempts made to get Jaywalker out on the dance-floor that go to show many foreign cul- tures treat leisure activities more independently and even as something a little private. With 20% of the world’s population and only 5% of the world’s arable land, it is no surprise that a garden in China can sprout up just about anywhere, as can be seen in this issue’s photo-spread on urban gardens. This agricultural twist continues as home improvement becomes all the rage in cities across China. Once the reserve of the elderly, we see how the hobby of planting one’s own herbs is enjoying something of a renaissance.
