I Hip Hop Dancing By Samantha

The hip hop history dates back to 1967 and is now still very popular today. No one knows how the hip hop dance actually started. Hip hop was influenced by the dance “disco” and other modern dances. The mention of hip hop itself dates back in the 70s but like I said the hip hop history started in 1967. The reason hip hop dates back to the 70s is because in 1967 it wasn’t the most popular thing to dance. The most popular dance in 1967 was the “disco”. The pe- riod between 1985 to 1993 was believed to be the golden age of hip hop. Hip hop dance is an art form. It is mainly performed in the streets dancing to hip hop music, for example rap music. Sometimes a catchy rhythm will also be danced to. What separates hip hop dance from any other type of dance is it is a type of dance that can be free style. From 1985 to 1993 hip hop was known to be the golden age. Every hip hop dancer has their own unique style of fashion while they are dancing. “The hip hop fashion comple- ments the expressions and attitudes of the dancers.” There can be strange, cool, and just plain weird fashions of the spe- cific dancer. Some accessories include very large eyeglasses, nameplates, nameplates, name belts, and multiple rings that dancers wear. The unique styles of the dancers can be astonishing or surprising. The history of hip hop is surprising and people would not believe all that can be true. The hip hop dance was actually influenced by the dance the disco. In the 1980s different types of hip hop was created. The first discovery of hip hop was dated back to the 70s. Hip hop was also known as “street jazz”. Also the word hip was from the African lan- guage; hip in Africa was known as current. Hip hop is known to be danced throughout most countries. People can learn something new about hip hop any day, any time. Hip hop can be very unique; it is very different type of dance from any other type of dance from any other type of dances. Music helps out the dancer and can be the background for the dancing. Music can be important while dancing hip hop, it is known to be very difficult to dance without any music. People don’t know what they can learn from this unique dance. You can learn something new almost every day about a dance that is different from any other types of dance. “hip hop dance has a particularly strong influence in France.”

Volume 1, Issue 1 Page 3 Girls By McKenna

Girls’ artistic gymnastics has been around for a long time. Many people have helped it move along to a forever changing physical and mental sport. Important dates start at the very beginning (almost). In ancient Greece, a “fool jumped over the bull” as stated in Gymnastics by Dan Gutman. This was the start of the sport today, gymnastics. A long time after that in 776 B.C the first Olympics began in Athens. At the time (and a long time after) men were the only ones to compete in the Olympics, or more specifically, gym- nastics. Not until 1928, were women allowed to do gymnastics. Unlike men, the women did the events vault, bars, beam, and floor. In 1996 the Magnificent Seven was born. The women who were included are Jaycie Phelps , , , , Amanda Bordon, , and my favorite . The Magnificent 7 is a part of the U.S team. Many people (in this case, women) helped gymnastics along. In 1970, Cathy Rigby competed in the World Championships. She was the first American women to win a gold medal. She was born Dec. 12, 1952 . In 1972 , did one of the first back flips on the , astonishing the crowds and inspiring people to do the sport. Olga was born on May 16th 1955. In 1976, Nadia Comaneci got seven perfect scores! In 1996, she was officially married to another gold medalist, Bart Conner, who was from America. Her birth date is November 12, 1961. Another person who made a difference is . She won the all around category in the 1984 Olympics which amazed us all. Retton’s B-day is January 24, 1968. Some people may think gymnastics is simple, but it is the exact opposite! Competitions include not only coaches and gymnasts, but judges. Gymnasts really want to get on their good side! Not only do the routine skills count, but your appear- ance does too. In1992 Olympics two girls were penalized for wearing too “skimpy” leotards. Gymnasts must be clean and make sure there is nothing that gives them too much attention. Gymnasts are allowed to wear A little makeup because their eyes and mouth tend to get lost I the big areas. Less can be more. So judges will not favor their own team over other teams, the judges countries are shown. Each executed skill is rated A-E: A being easy, and E being hard. An example of an easy skill is a somer- sault or a forward roll. An E skill would be a double twisting Tsukahara. People who compete in the Olympics might have to do 3 C skills and 1 D skill. The highest score a gymnast can possibly get is a 10.0. The four girls’ artistic gymnastics events in Olympic order are Vault, , Beam, and last Floor. Vault’s main equipment is the runway (a carpet surface with a foam like bottom) and the table. The table is 47 in. tall and the runway is 82 feet long. There are four parts in vault: run-up, preflight, afterflight, and landing. Uneven Bars main equipment is the low bar (5 feet tall) and the high bar (7.5 feet) and these bars are 5 to 6 feet apart and 94 inches wide.( Remember all equipments’ heights, lengths, and widths can be varied but these are official measurements.) Bars hurt gymnasts’ hands a lot. You get rips, blisters, and even blood filled blisters! (Gross right?) Beam’s main equipment is, well, a beam. It is four inches wide and 16 feet long. It is four feet above the ground. Beam is considered the hardest event. Not only do they have to worry about the skills, but gymnasts have to stay on, too! Floor’s equipment is the floor! There is nothing but air to grab on to.

In the beginning, girls were not allowed to do or watch gymnastics. Now look at the change and impact girls have had on gymnastics! We even have our own events! Gymnastics has came a long way.
