The Anniversary Year has arrived! When one thinks of it, it is remarkable that Delius and his music have continuously been a modest but significant part of the European musical tapestry since about 1900 − not the full 150 years, but nevertheless a gratifyingly long time. Initially, the music caused controversy − the critics never agreed about its qualities − but the ‘naysayers’ came round, and from 1908, under Delius’s great supporters Beecham and Henry Wood (and to a lesser extent, Granville Bantock, Albert Coates and Landon Ronald) many, many performances were given over more than 50 years; the Trust was formed in 1934, and the Society in 1962; and the first volume in the complete Collected Edition appeared in 1953, and the last in the early 2000s. After Beecham’s death in 1961 there was something of a lull, but a new generation of conductors such as Charles Mackerras, Charles Groves and then Richard Hickox, Mark Elder and Andrew Davis faithfully took up the cause (albeit not as fiercely as Beecham and Wood had); following Beecham’s 1959 biography, the 1970s saw the publication of a number of books (most importantly those of Eric Fenby, Alan Jefferson, Christopher Palmer, and in particular Lionel Carley’s The Paris Years and two volumes of Letters, and Robert Threlfall’s two Catalogues), and since

    Ken Russell The Great Composers Elgar; The Debussy Film; Song of Summer These astonishing documentaries, by ground- breaking director Ken Russell (Valentino, The Devils) were originally broadcast in the BBC TV arts documentary strands Monitor and Omnibus during the 1960s. On 28 March 2016 they will be released together on DVD and Blu-ray in a Dual Format Edition by the BFI. Each film has an audio commentary, and in a new filmed interview, film editor Michael Bradsell talks about working with Ken Russell. Also included is rarely-seen archival footage of Sir Edward Elgar. Elgar (1962), Russell’s tribute to the music he loved, is remarkable for its sensitive portrayal of the rise of a young musician from an underprivileged background to international fame. The Debussy Film (1965), co-written by Melvyn Bragg, is a truly experimental work that culminates in a sublimely ethereal finale. Perhaps the finest of Russell’s 1960s biographical BBC productions, Song of Summer (1968) is an immensely moving story of sacrifice, idealism and musical genius which charts the final five years in the life of Frederick Delius.     Toscanini VII, 1937-1942: NBC, London, Netherlands, Lucerne, Buenos Aires, Philadelphia We now return to our regularly scheduled program, and with it will come my first detailed analyses of Toscanini’s style in various music because, for once, we have a number of complete performances by alternate orchestras to compare. This is paramount because it shows quite clear- ly that, although he had a uniform approach to music and insisted on both technical perfection and emotional commitment from his orchestras, he did not, as Stokowski or Furtwängler did, impose a specific sound on his orchestras. Although he insisted on uniform bowing in the case of the Philadelphia Orchestra, for instance, one can still discern the classic Philadelphia Orchestra sound, despite its being “neatened up” to meet his standards. In the case of the BBC Symphony, for instance, the sound he elicited from them was not far removed from the sound that Adrian Boult got out of them, in part because Boult himself preferred a lean, clean sound as did Tosca- nini. We shall also see that, for better or worse, the various guest conductors of the NBC Sym- phony Orchestra did not get vastly improved sound result out of them, not even that wizard of orchestral sound, Leopold Stokowki, because the sound profile of the orchestra was neither warm in timbre nor fluid in phrasing. Toscanini’s agreement to come back to New York to head an orchestra created (pretty much) for him is still shrouded in mystery. All we know for certain is that Samuel Chotzinoff, representing David Sarnoff and RCA, went to see him in Italy and made him the offer, and that he first turned it down.
