Gruen, Chair Me’or ‘Enayim is conventionally considered to be early modern Jewish history. Recent scholarship tends to consider the work Renaissance historiography, Counter-Reformation apology or some combination of the two. The approach to date has focused primarily upon the third and most sizeable part of Me’or ‘Enayim, the sixty-chapter “Words of Understanding”. In this dissertation, I seek to state a claim to the purpose for the work, a chimerical task. I argue that Azariah de’ Rossi wrote Me’or ‘Enayim neither as history nor as apology but rather to articulate his vision of a new Jewish identity for the Jews of his time and place – late 16th century northern Italy. Recognizing the dominant Christian cultural embrace of the Roman empire and the concomitant Jewish opposition to Rome, de’ Rossi felt that the pressure of the Counter-Reformation left Jews with no viable way to be relevant to contemporary Italian culture while remaining Jewish. He proposed abandoning the account of the Jewish interaction with Rome, an account long contested by Christianity, and replacing it with the honor accorded Judaism by Greece, specifically the Hellenistic empire. Key to that enterprise was emphasizing the role in Jewish history of Alexander the Great, Ptolemy Philadelphus and even Gaius Caligula (a Hellenistic monarch by virtue of the fact that he reigned before the destruction of the Second Temple and the advent of the Roman empire). This purpose accounts for much that is puzzling about Me’or ‘Enayim. It explains why the book focuses upon Hellenistic history in general and upon the sources Aristeas, Philo and Josephus in particular. It explains why Roman history is either dismissed, in the case of Livy, or discounted, in the case of the Rabbinic midrashim accounting for the death of Titus by a divinely dispatched gnat. It explains why the work is comprised of three parts, for political identity is composed of a past, a present and a future. Most of all, I believe, my approach explains how both strains of current scholarship – the historians and the apologists – are right, but only in part. It is true that de’ Rossi is interested in what actually happened: he takes the time to establish the Hellenistic respect for Jews, their priests and their Temple. And it is true that de’ Rossi is eager to discard Rabbinic midrashim dressed up as history that can be debunked: for de’ Rossi, Rabbinic midrashim are vital as ethical lessons, lessons of hope. But de’ Rossi’s interest in history is selective, and not simply because as a religious Jew he is incapable of removing God as a causal agent. De’ Rossi privileges 1 Hellenistic history over Roman history because while the latter is useless to Jews of his age, the former is revitalizing. De’ Rossi’s Me’or ‘Enayim is about the usefulness of history – namely, history in support of identity. In that, it is fruitful to think of Me’or ‘Enayim not simply as a Renaissance work of humanism or of a Counter-Reformation work of apology. It is also, and perhaps primarily, a Jewish work in the spirit of the Protestant Reformation’s rearticulation of the religious past. 2 I dedicate this work to my wife, Kathy. An overview There are nearly 470 verses in our bible used to describe the form and furnishings of the Tabernacle and Temple. The bible gives a very specific plan for the building of the tabernacle. However, the temple is not outlined in detail. I Chron. 28:11‐19 does seem to indicate that the Lord gave David some sort of plan or model. The tabernacle was an ornate tent shrine that served the people of Israel for approximately 200 years until it was replaced by Solomon’s temple. This temple served as God’s home for approximately 400 years until the Babylonians destroyed it in 586 BC. When the Israelites returned from Babylon, Zerubbabel over saw the rebuilding of a much inferior temple in 520 BC. This building was damaged and repaired many times until Herod built his “renovation” in 19 BC. The Roman General, Titus destroyed this temple in 70AD. II. One of the most well-known passages of the Tora, due to its being recited both inside and outside the synagogue, appears in this week’s Parasha: BaMidbar 6:22-27 Speak unto Aharon and unto his sons, saying: In this way ye shall bless the children of Israel; ye shall say unto them: The Lord Bless thee, and Keep thee; The Lord Make His Face to Shine upon thee, and be Gracious unto thee; The Lord Lift up His Countenance upon thee, and Give thee peace. So shall they put My Name upon the children of Israel, and I will Bless them.' When Birchat Kohanim is invoked. Kohanim directly bless the people living in Israel daily each time the Amida is repeated, and in Chutz LaAretz on Yom Tov; the Shliach Tzibbur (prayer leader for the congregation) in the diaspora regularly invokes these blessings in Chazarat HaShaTz (the repetition of the Silent Devotion); and parents bestow these blessings on their children on Friday nights and Erev Yom HaKippurim both inside and outside Israel. A difficulty with an implication of these Berachot. Despite how well-known and often recited these particularly blessings may be, the Talmud startlingly points to one portion of this famous text and challenges it as unjust, and even hypocritical: Berachot 20b R. 'Avira discoursed — sometimes in the name of R. Ammi, and sometimes in the name of R.     THE COVENANT: A Lenten Journey Curriculum THE PRIESTLY COVENANT – Session Five Leader’s Opening Remarks Our covenant journey has taken us to Eden, where a broken promise activates the genesis of redemption. Next, we went by boat with Noah, where God re-created the world as the stage upon which the story of God’s grace and redemption would play out. Then despite Abraham and Sarah’s shortcomings, God used them to secure the innumerable seed of blessing that God had in store for the world. Last week, we made a turn as we Laws, or standards that God would set to define how one should live in relationship with God and with others. 57 THE COVENANT: A Lenten Journey Curriculum Today, we will look again at Moses and this time, also his brother, Aaron, his nephew, Eleazar, and Eleazar’s son, Phinehas. This journey will reveal the importance of succession. The priestly covenant is a covenant of peace. But it starts out as anything but peaceful… Remember Moses’ reluctance to do what God had for him? He stuttered, and insisted that he wasn’t capable of doing all that God was calling him to do. So, God relented and gave Moses his brother, Aaron as an assurance that Moses had all that was needed to help free the Israelites from Pharaoh. A series of plagues and the death of Pharaoh’s son later, and Moses, Aaron, and all of the Israelites, crossed the Red Sea, and the enemy was defeated! But it still was not peaceful! 58 THE COVENANT: A Lenten Journey Curriculum The Israelites received the law, but the idolatry of Israel angered God and God denied the Israelites the peace that God had for them.
