78 UNIVERSITY ANTHROPOLOGY: EARLY1DEPARTMENTS IN THE UNITED STATES John F. Freeman Paper read before the Kroeber Anthropological Society April 25, 1964, Berkeley, California I. The Conventional View Unlike other social sciences, anthropology prides itself on its youth, seeking its paternity in Morgan, Tylor, Broca, and Ratzel, its childhood in the museum and its maturity in the university. While the decades after 1850 do indeed suggest that a hasty marriage took place between Ethnology, or the study of the races of mankind conceived as divinely created, and Anthropology, or the study of man as part of the zoological world; the marriage only symbol- ized the joining of a few of the tendencies in anthropology and took place much too late to give the child an honest name. When George Grant MacCurdy claimed in 1899 that "Anthropology has matured late," he was in fact only echoing the sentiments of the founders of the Anthropological Societies of Paris (Paul Broca) and London (James Hunt), who in fostering the very name, anthropology, were urging that a science of man depended upon prior develop- ments of other sciences. MacCurdy stated it In evolutionary terms as "man is last and highest in the geological succession, so the science of man is the last and highest branch of human knowledge'" (MacCurdy 1899:917). Several disciples of Franz Boas have further shortened the history of American anthropology, arguing that about 1900 anthropology underwent a major conversion. Before that date, Frederica de Laguna tells us, "anthropologists [were] serious-minded amateurs or professionals in other disciplines who de- lighted in communicating-across the boundaries of the several natural sci- ences and the humanities, [because] museums, not universities, were the cen- ters of anthropological activities, sponsoring field work, research and publication, and making the major contributions to the education of profes- sional anthropologists, as well as serving the general public" (de Laguna 1960:91, 101). -

Lovecraft written in June 1917 and first published in the March 1922 issue of The Vagrant . Contents. Plot summary [ edit | edit source ] "The Tomb" tells of Jervas Dudley, a self-confessed day-dreamer. While still a child, he discovers the entrance to a mausoleum, belonging to the family Hyde, whose nearby family mansion had burnt down many years previously. The entrance to the mausoleum is padlocked and slightly ajar. Jervas attempts to break the padlock, but is unable. Dispirited, he takes to sleeping beside the tomb. Eventually, inspired by reading Plutarch's Lives , Dudley decides to patiently wait until it is his time to gain entrance to the tomb. One night, several years later, Jervas falls asleep once more beside the mausoleum. He awakes suddenly in the late afternoon, and believes that a light has been latterly extinguished from inside the tomb. Taking leave, he returns to his home, where he goes directly to the attic, to a rotten chest, and therein finds the key to the tomb. Once inside the mausoleum, Jervas discovers an empty coffin with the name of "Jervas" upon the plate. He begins, so he believes, to sleep in the empty coffin each night. He also develops a fear of thunder and fire, and is aware that he is being spied upon by one of his neighbours. One night, against his better judgement, Jervas sets out for the tomb on an overcast night, a night threatening to storm. -

In like manner the main incentive for the preparation of the present mono- graph is the description and illustration of two splendid examples of Mexican wood-carving which came to the Museum with the mosaic collection, the gift of Mr. James B. Ford. As it was our privilege to include in the former book all the known examples of mosaics from Mexico, it has been equally our good fortune to have examined practically all of the known specimens of wood-carving in the museums of Europe and Mexico, in order to complete our investigations of the subject. -

The Marquisate of the Valley of Oaxaca was carefully constructed during his lifetime to be his lasting legacy in New Spain. The goal of this dissertation is to reexamine published primary sources in light of this new argument and integrate unknown archival material to trace the development of a lasting legacy by Cortés and his direct heirs in Spanish colonial Mexico. Part one looks at Cortés’s life after the conquest of Mexico, giving particular attention to the themes of fame and honor and how these ideas guided his actions. The importance of land and property in and after the conquest is also highlighted. Part two is an examination of the marquisate, discussing the key features of the various landholdings and also their importance to the legacy Cortés sought to construct. -

MURRAY David Browman has produced an invaluable reference work for prac- titioners of contemporary Americanist archaeology who are interested in documenting the largely unrecognized contribution of generations of women to its development. Meticulous examination of the archaeo- logical literature, especially footnotes and acknowledgments, and the archival records of major universities, museums, field school programs, expeditions, and general anthropological archives reveals a complex story of marginalization and professional invisibility, albeit one that will be surprising neither to feminist scholars nor to female archaeologists.
