HIS STRIKING three-QUARter-length portrait depicts Bianca Capello (1541-1587), one of the most celebrated women of the Cinquecento. Since her death the fame, scandal, and intrigue that surrounded her life have continued to fascinate historians and biographers, and this Timposing portrait captures the wealth and majesty that helped make her such a compelling figure. Bianca was born into a wealthy and powerful Venetian family, but at the age of fifteen caused scandal by running away and secretly marrying Pietro Bonaventuri, a Florentine accountant who had been working at the Salviati bank in Venice. Bianca’s father, Bartolomeo, was predictably furious and managed to have Bonaventuri banned from Venice, but his attempts to send his daughter to a monastery were resisted. The young couple settled in Florence where Bianca soon attracted the attention of Grand Prince Francesco de’ Medici (1541 – 1587), heir to the Tuscan throne. Bianca became Francesco’s mistress, despite his marriage to Joanna of Austria (1547-1578), and in 1572 Pietro was murdered ‘with the knowledge and, probably, approval of Francesco’.¹ Bianca and Francesco continued their relationship even when the latter became Grand Duke of Tuscany in 1574, and they had a son, Antonio, in 1576. The affair was common knowledge in Florence but was generally unpopular given the regard that Joanna of Austria was held, due to her devout nature and the political and economic alliances that the Hapsburg princess provided.² However, Joanna unexpectedly died in 1578, and two months later Francesco and Bianca married in secret. -

La guardia a cavallo ed i trabanti accom- pagnarono la principessa dalle porte della città alla basilica della SS. Annunziata, dove il padre, il granduca Cosimo III, l’attendeva trepidante dopo venticinque anni di separazione. Cosimo impedì alla figlia di inginocchiarsi davanti a lui: entrati in chiesa “si trattennero poco dall’eccesso della reciproca tenerezza d’affetto”1. Iniziava così, per la figlia del granduca Cosimo III e di Marguerite- Louise d’Orléans, l’ultimo, lungo periodo della sua vita, che si sarebbe conclusa venticinque anni più tardi, il 18 febbraio 1743, data che segna al tempo stesso l’estinzione della dinastia dei Medici. La mostra oggi allestita in Palazzo Pitti, la prima che viene dedicata all’Elettrice Palatina dai musei statali fiorentini, eredi dell’ultima dei Medici in virtù delle disposizioni espresse nell’articolo terzo della Convenzione di famiglia, stipulata col nuovo granduca Francesco Stefano di Lorena il 31 ottobre 1737, è un altro ‘ritorno’ nella città da lei tanto amata. -

On June 20th, our first parish meeting was held in the Family Center. There were some 55 people in attendance. To prepare for the parish meeting a survey was posted on the parish website and available for parishioners to answer. Some submitted an available paper survey. The results are posted on the parish web site and will remain available for anyone to consult throughout the year. Some 58 persons answered the survey. The results ran to some 50+ pages. A synthesis of the material will be posted on the website soon. However, I urge everyone to read the survey responses. All of the responses were well thought out and cogently expressed. There seems to be a remark- able consensus on many mattes and a thoughtful disagreement on others. At the parish meeting, fortunately, it turns out; I was not able to present a synthesis of the survey because I could not hook up my laptop to the projector. As a happy consequence the conversation among the participants begins right away, based upon what they wanted to express and not as a response to my presentation. The conversation was spirited and fruitful. Participants focused on three overriding issues: faith formation, stabilizing our financial situation, and outreach in general but particularly to youth and young adults. A variety of views were expressed and differences were very respectfully express and received. -

From Daft Punk to Stromae, how global is ‘French Music’? By Virginie Berger, translation Emma Dovey. Who is the international audience of the francophone music industry? How can we explain the export successes of Daft Punk and Stromae? Is French rap music’s international investment paying off? While for a long time the appeal of making money was not associated with the cultural economy, the invention of marketing and the internet succeeded in transforming some French artists into products that are consumed all over the world. In order to better understand how the French music scene adopted a strategy of profit and internationalisation, the French Touch movement is telling to say the least. It deciphers a musical style that has transcended ‘underground’ music and become mainstream. To explain this transformation, one supposition suggests that 1970s pop stars coincided with the emergence of marketing theories. At this point in time, thanks to rock music and supermarket shelves which were overflowing with Elvismania and Beatlemania merchandise, North America and Great Britain were innovating, transforming and marking the birth of musical merchandising.1 A few years later, disco music, the predecessor of the clubbing2 and DJing scenes, was emerging in the United States. At the dawn of the 1980s, a major development then took place which suggested a more industrial and more cyclical music genre inspired by pop, funk and soul. This new genre, closely related to party and dance culture, was an ideal birthplace for the worthy heir of disco: house music. This very music would then develop at the start of the 21st century, as an undercurrent in Madonna and Daft Punk’s global smash hits. -

Photo by Alessia Pierdomenico/Reuters One-hundred-fifteen Roman Catholic cardinals locked themselves up in the Vatican today to select the church’s next pope. In pictures of the cardinals, they were shown wearing a variety of unusual hats. How do cardinals choose their hats? To suit the occasion, to represent their homeland, or, sometimes, to make a personal statement. Cardinals primarily wear one of three different types. The most basic hat is a skullcap called the zucchetto (pl. zucchetti), which is a simple round hat that looks like a beanie or yarmulke. Next is the collapsible biretta, a taller, square-ridged cap with three peaks on top. There are certain times when it’s customary to put on the biretta, such as when entering and leaving church for Mass, but it’s often just personal preference. Cardinals wear both of these hats in red, which symbolizes how each cardinal should be willing to spill his blood for the church. (The zucchetto is actually worn beneath the biretta.) Some cardinals also wear regional variations on the hat, such as the Spanish style, which features four peaks instead of three. On special occasions, such as when preparing to elect the next leader of their church, they may also wear a mitre, which is a tall and usually white pointed hat. The mitre is the same style of cap commonly worn by the pope, and it comes in three different styles with varying degrees of ornamentation, according to the occasion. -

Like the painting depicting the Young Man with an Apple, this painting dates from Raffaello’s younger years, when he attended and served the court of Urbino. Raffaello was still just a child when his father Giovanni Santi, who under Duke Federico was the intellectual of the court and trusted on all matters artistic, held a theatrical play to celebrate the wedding of Guidobaldo, the Duke of Urbino’s heir, to Elisabetta Gonzaga. The painting arrived in the Medici collections, and thence to the Uffizi, as part of the dowry for Vittoria della Rovere’s wedding in 1631. It depicts the young woman dressed richly in clothes woven with gold, characterised by a refined, aristocratic elegance. A headdress in the portentous form of a scorpion rests on the lady’s forehead. The depiction of the landscape in the background is particularly poetic, with the light of the rising sun touching the strips of cloud in the sky and the rocky path over to the right. Arriving in Florence from Urbino as part of Vittoria della Rovere’s dowry upon her marriage to the Grand Duke of Tuscany, this painting probably depicts a member of the Urbino court, perhaps the teenaged figure of Francesco Maria della Rovere himself. The boy is presented to us in the role of Paris. Like the hero in the myth, he holds the symbolic fruit in his right hand, destined for the most beautiful of the ladies who we must imagine competing before him. -

Journal of Religion & Society Volume 1 (1999) ISSN 1522-5658 Galileo and the Inquisition1 William E. Carroll, Cornell College (Mt. Vernon, Iowa) Abstract The story of Galileo's encounter with the Inquisition in the early 17th Century continues to be an important part of the story of modernity. Galileo is frequently seen as breaking with the scientific heritage of Aristotle to found a new science of nature and, in the process, he also had to do battle with an entrenched biblical literalism in the Catholic Church. According to the generally accepted view, Galileo's break with both Aristotle and the Inquisition is a founding feature of modern culture. This essay challenges such a view and argues that Galileo's science, at least in its principles, is Aristotelian in inspiration, and that Galileo and the theologians of the Inquisition shared first principles concerning both the complementarity of faith and reason as well as the authority of the Church to be the authentic interpreter of the truths of scripture. In fact, the controversy between Galileo and the Inquisition would be unintelligible were it not the case that all parties shared common first principles. Introduction [1] On the occasion of the publication, in March 1987, of the Catholic Church's condemnation of in vitro fertilization, surrogate motherhood, and fetal experimentation, there appeared a cartoon in a Roman newspaper, in which two bishops are standing next to a telescope. In the distant night sky, in addition to Saturn and the Moon, there are dozens of test-tubes. One bishop turns to the other, who is in front of the telescope, and asks: "This time what should we do? Should we look or not?" The historical reference to Galileo was clear. -
