Subject: California Emissions Recalls #529, #530 #531 & #532 -- VECI Label Replacement

Models: The Following 1992 Model Year Vehicles With California Emission Control Systems and Built Before October 10, 1991: • Recall #529: Plymouth Sundance & (AP-Body), Plymouth Acclaim & (AA-Body), and (AG-Body) -- Vehicles Equipped With a 2.5L Engine and Manual • Recall #530: Plymouth Sundance and Dodge Shadow (AP-Body) -- Vehicles Equipped With a 2.2L Engine and Manual Transmission • Recall #531: Dodge Shadow (AP-Body), Dodge Spirit (AA-Body), Dodge Daytona (AG-Body) and Chrysler LeBaron 2 Door (AJ-Body) -- Vehicles Equipped With a 2.5L Turbocharged Engine • Recall #532: Plymouth Sundance and Dodge Shadow (AP-Body) -- Vehicles Equipped With a 2.2L Engine and Automatic Transmission

Vehicle Emission Control Information (VECI) labels installed on the listed vehicles contain errors. The State of California required Emission Control System Bar Code and Emission Control System Component identification sections of the labels incorrectly identify the emission system control components.

The label sections identify the engine family and emission system configuration for the purpose of emission testing and inspection of vehicles. The incorrect labels may cause vehicle owners to wrongly fail the biennial emissions test required for vehicle registration. To correct the condition, new VECI labels must be installed.

Four different VECI labels are involved depending on vehicle model, engine and transmission type. For administrative purposes, four separate recall numbers have been assigned as listed above.

Replacement labels are being mailed directly to owners. The owners are requested to install the labels themselves or, if preferred, to arrange for dealer installation of the owner-supplied labels without charge.

Details of this service action are explained in the following sections.

Dealer Notification & Vehicle List Involved dealers: Each dealer to whom involved vehicles were invoiced (or the current dealer at the same street address) will receive a copy of this dealer recall notification letter and a list of the involved vehicles by first class mail.

The Vehicle List is arranged in Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) sequence. Owners known to Chrysler are also listed. The lists are for dealer reference in arranging for service of involved vehicles as necessary.

All other California dealers: Each California Dodge and Chrysler-Plymouth dealer who does not receive a Vehicle List will receive a copy of this dealer recall notification letter by first class mail.

DIAL System Function 70

All involved vehicles will be entered to DIAL System Function 70 at the time of recall implementation for dealer inquiry by VIN as needed.

Correct VECI labels are being mailed directly to owners. An additional label may be obtained if needed without charge through the Los Angeles or San Francisco Zone Service Office. Be sure to specify the proper label for the involved vehicle and recall, using the following table.

Owner Notification and Service Scheduling

All involved vehicle owners known to Chrysler are being notified of the service requirement by first class mail. They are requested to apply a supplied VECI label covering the original incorrect label. Any owner who prefers not to install the label is asked to schedule an appointment for the free service with a dealer. A copy of the owner notification letter is attached.

Enclosed with each owner notification is an Owner Recall Notification Form. The involved vehicle and recall are identified on the form for owner or dealer reference as needed.

Service Procedure

Upon owner request, apply the VECI label as follows:

1. Raise the hood and locate the VECI label on the underside of the hood panel. 2. Clean the surface of the existing label and apply the owner-supplied label directly over it, covering the original label.

Completion Reporting and Reimbursement

Claims for vehicles which have been serviced must be submitted on the DIAL System. Claims submitted will be used by Chrysler to record recall service completions and provide dealer payments. Use one of the following labor operation numbers and time allowances as applicable for the recall number involved.

Note: Vehicles requiring VECI label installation are divided into four separate recall groups depending on vehicle model and engine/emission system configuration. To ensure proper payment, be sure to use the correct labor operation number for the applicable recall as defined below. The recall number can be identified from the Owner Recall Notification Form (lower right), from the applicable dealer Vehicle List or from DIAL System Function 70.

EMISSIONS RECALL --

1992 CHRYSLER PASSENGER CARS WITH 2.2 LITER OR 2.5 LITER ENGINES SOLD IN CALIFORNIA

Dear Chrysler Vehicle Owner:

Recently we learned that an incorrect Vehicle Emission Control Information label was installed on your vehicle. The State of California inspects this label as a part of its emission testing program. The inspection may be performed on your vehicle every two years and before it is sold. For these reasons, and to assure that your vehicle complies with government regulations, we ask that you apply the enclosed label so that it covers the existing wrong label which is located on the underside of the hood. To assure good adhesion, it will be necessary to wipe the existing label clean before you apply the new label.

If you prefer not to perform the installation yourself, contact your dealer to make an appointment for the label application. This service will be provided free of charge. Take the enclosed Owner Recall Notification Form and label with you at the time of your appointment and give them to your dealer. The form identifies the vehicle and recall for which service is required.

If you have any problem obtaining the service, please contact the Chrysler Zone Service Office in your area. (It is listed under "Service Assistance" in your Owner’s Manual.) A Zone representative will arrange for prompt servicing of your vehicle.

We regret any inconvenience this action may cause you. However, we believe the correction is essential to help ensure that your vehicle will meet state inspection program requirements.

Thank you for your prompt attention to this important matter.
