From the Wellington Times, 25 October 2017; "Looking Back", by Marjorie Wiltse. "It was an era when mysticism blended easily with religion. So it was that Ira Chadsey prepared carefully for the afterlife - in which he believed that he would return to earth as a white horse. He erected mounds of stones - cairns - around his farm as unmistakeable identifying markers to his reincarnated self.
"By the time he was 77 his wife, Roxey, had been dead for seven years. The couple had produced no children. So, on one summer's day in 1905, Chadsey walked down the lane to the sugar shack eating an orange. Arriving at the small shed, he set it ablaze and watched it grow. He then shot himself in a manner so that he fell back into the flames. When the fire was extinguished, nothing remained but the barrel of a gun. And a trail of orange peels.
"The cairns remain on the farm - now known as By Chadsey's Cairns Winery. The only sightings of a white horse have been on the labels of the wine produced from the vines on Ira Chadsey's farm.
"Ira Chadsey's life and that of the woman he loved is the subject of The Chadsey Play produced by Written on the Water Theatre. It previewed in the workshop at By Chadsey's Cairns Winery in the fall of 2016."
