Wednesday, October 20, 1982 Page 3 A Homecoming Thought: Test Your Wings by Chris Shipley The excitement of Homecoming has subsided but the memories still linger. Undoubtedly, we all visited with return- ing alumni and joined in conversation of their lives in the "real world." In turn, we told of status quo Allegheny and envied the excitement our post-graduate friends enjoy. "I can't wait to be out of here!" became the quote of the weekend. Perhaps we would all do well to curb this anxiousness and reflect on the benefits of Allegheny. Although our alma mater may lack excitement, it offers an opportunity not often found in the world beyond college--the chance to test our wings. In the cushioned environment of Allegheny College, mistakes, while not condoned, certainly are not scorned. In the midst of academic failure, professors and advisors rally to support their student with other faculty and administrators. When dreams shatter and personal crisis strikes, RAs and deans are available to lend assistance. In fact, Allegheny's counseling and career services centers are unique support systems not often found in other institutions let alone the "real world." It seems then that an Allegheny student cannot really fail unless he so desires. In the "real world" where back stabbing and abandonment in troubled times prevail, we cannot presume to live as "dangerously" as we might during our college days. While we cannot condone a life of -ft 11'5 Na KRTY gat irresponsibility -yea, reckless abandon--let 'Ailt.YES us realize that our years at Allegheny College are the time to experiment, grow, rye ReASIAMICS and venture beyond traditional limits.
