Historical Background Sororities and fraternities were first established at the University of California, Irvine (UCI) in 1967. Greek Life was established as an administrative body at UCI in 1989 under the guidance of the Dean of Students. Greek Life works to foster leadership skills in students so that they may uphold the values, oaths, and commitments of their collegiate fraternal organizations. Since 1967, UCI's fraternity and sorority community has grown to over 1,800 students. UCI's Greek Songfest was established in 1980. It is the largest annual Greek-sponsored fundraiser at UCI. Fraternities and sororities perform renditions of Broadway musicals during the event. Each year the Greek community selects a different philanthropic organization as the recipient of the substantial funds raised by Songfest. Several other organizations also oversee UCI's fraternities and sororities. The Interfraternity Council (IFC) governs several UCI fraternities. Many fraternities are also member organizations of the North American Interfraternity Conference (NIC). Overseeing several UCI sororities is the Panhellenic Association, the local governing body of the National Panhellenic Council (NPC). The National Pan-Hellenic Council, Inc. (NPHC) provides leadership and training for nationally recognized fraternities and sororities of African American origin. The Association of College Honor Societies (ACHS) oversees the Greek honor societies at UCI. The dates in the following chronology represent the initial establishment of each chapter at UCI. Most Greek letter societies listed are chapters of national organizations, but some are local to Southern California or UCI. In most cases the date represents the year the chapter received its national charter. In other cases the date represents the year that UCI Greek Life officially recognized the sorority or fraternity's existence, which in most cases preceded the date the national charter was granted. In some cases chapters have experienced a lapse in their charters or have since closed. AMERICAN COLLEGE FRATERNITIES: A DESCKIPTIVE ANALYSIS OF THE SOCIETY SYSTEM IN THE COLLEGES OF THE UNITED STATES, WITH A DETAILED ACCOUNT OF EACH FRATERNITY. BY WM. RAIMOND BAIRD. PHILADELPHIA: J. B. LIPPINCOTT & CO. London : 16 Southampton Street, Covent Garden. 1879. v- \j „ CASE ft Copyright, 1879, by Wm. Baimond Baird. • • • • • • • ••"•• • •• • • •• • ••.••>•••••• • ••• « • •• • ••••• •••••• • ' PEEFAOE. The author of this book is a member of one of the college fraternities. Having occasion to make inquiries in regard to one of these organizations, he was surprised to learn that there was no general repository of facts in regard to them, that few of their members knew more than the names of those with which they had come into contact, and that the majority were ignorant alike, of the origin, principles, history, and customs of any of the fraternities, oftentimes their own included. This lack of knowledge has arisen not from the desire to know nothing of other organizations, nor from indifference to the affairs of their neighbors, but from the fact that information of this kind had never been brought together in a convenient shape. An endeavor has been made to make this book a vehicle of such information. In seeking material the author has in general met with the hearty co-operation of the fraternities themselves, and with few exceptions all facilities have been placed at his disposal. Nothing is here given to the public that an intelligent observer could not ascertain, and no attempt has been made to lay bare any of the so-called secrets of the college societies.
