Nineteenth Sunday after Pentecost Divine Service Setting One

As We Gather It can be difficult to rejoice when the outlook is bleak and unpromising. The Apostle Paul experienced many difficult times but he had confidence in God who controls our future. Therefore he was able to advise the Philippians to “Rejoice in the Lord always.” Trusting in the promises of God made sure in Christ’s resurrection allowed him to be content in every situation. May we also have this peace that surpasses all understanding, even in these difficult times. Pastor Quardokus

1 Only-begotten, Word of God eternal, Lord of creation, merciful and mighty: Hear us, Your servants, as our tuneful voices Rise in Your presence.

2 Holy this temple where our Lord is dwelling; This is none other than the gate of heaven. Ever Your children, year by year rejoicing, Chant in Your temple.

3 Hear us, O Father, as we throng Your temple. By Your past blessings, by Your present bounty, Smile on Your children, and in grace and mercy Hear our petition.

The sign of the cross may be made by all in remembrance of their Baptism.

P In the of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen.

P If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. C But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Silence for reflection on God's Word and for self-examination.

P Let us then confess our sins to God our Father. C Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen.

P Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen.

Reading from the Book of Concord Luther’s Large Catechism, The Third Commandment, 100-102

Let me tell you this, even though you know God’s Word perfectly and are already a master in all things: you are daily in the devil’s kingdom [Colossians 1:13-14]. He ceases neither day nor night to sneak up on you and to kindle in your heart unbelief and wicked thoughts against these three commandments and all the commandments. Therefore, you must always have God’s Word in your heart, upon your lips, and in your ears. But where the heart is idle and the Word does not make a sound, the devil breaks in and has done the damage before we are aware [Matthew 13:24-30]. On the other hand, the Word is so effective that whenever it is seriously contemplated, heard, and used, it is bound never to be without fruit [Isaiah 55:11; Mark 4:20]. It always awakens new understanding, pleasure, and devoutness and produces a pure heart and pure thoughts [Philippians 4:8]. For these words are not lazy or dead, but are creative, living words [Hebrews 4:12]. And even though no other interest or necessity moves us, this truth ought to urge everyone to the Word, because thereby the devil is put to flight and driven away [James 4:7]. Besides, this commandment is fulfilled and this exercise in the Word is more pleasing to God than any work of hypocrisy, however brilliant.

Readings from Holy Scripture

Old Testament Lesson Isaiah 25:6–9

6On this mountain the LORD of hosts will make for all peoples a feast of rich food, a feast of well-aged wine, of rich food full of marrow, of aged wine well refined. 7And he will swallow up on this mountain the covering that is cast over all peoples, the veil that is spread over all nations. 8He will swallow up death forever; and the Lord GOD will wipe away tears from all faces, and the reproach of his people he will take away from all the earth, for the LORD has spoken. 9It will be said on that day, “Behold, this is our God; we have waited for him, that he might save us. This is the LORD; we have waited for him; let us be glad and rejoice in his salvation.”

Epistle Lesson Philippians 4:4–13

4Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. 5Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand; 6do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. 7And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. 8Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. 9What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me—practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.

7 10I rejoiced in the Lord greatly that now at length you have revived your concern for me. You indeed concerned for me, but you had no opportunity. 11Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. 12I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. 13I can do all things through him who strengthens me.

Holy Gospel Matthew 22:1-14

P The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the 22nd chapter C Glory to You, O Lord.

1Again Jesus spoke to them in parables, saying, 2“The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who gave a wedding feast for his son, 3and sent his servants to call those who were invited to the wedding feast, but they would not come. 4Again he sent other servants, saying, ‘Tell those who are invited, See, I have prepared my dinner, my oxen and my fat calves have been slaughtered, and everything is ready. Come to the wedding feast.’ 5But they paid no attention and went off, one to his farm, another to his business, 6while the rest seized his servants, treated them shamefully, and killed them. 7The king was angry, and he sent his troops and destroyed those murderers and burned their city. 8Then he said to his servants, ‘The wedding feast is ready, but those invited were not worthy. 9Go therefore to the main roads and invite to the wedding feast as many as you find.’ 10And those servants went out into the roads and gathered all whom they found, both bad and good. So the wedding hall was filled with guests. (Continued)

11“But when the king came in to look at the guests, he saw there a man who had no wedding garment. 12And he said to him, ‘Friend, how did you get in here without a wedding garment?’ And he was speechless. 13Then the king said to the attendants, ‘Bind him hand and foot and cast him into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’ 14For many are called, but few are chosen.”

1 A multitude comes from the east and the west To sit at the feast of salvation With Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, the blest, Obeying the Lord’s invitation. Have mercy upon us, O Jesus!

2 O God, let us hear when our Shepherd shall call In accents persuasive and tender, That while there is time we make haste, one and all, And find Him, our mighty defender. Have mercy upon us, O Jesus!

3 All trials shall be like a dream that is past, Forgotten all trouble and mourning. All questions and doubts have been answered at last, When rises the light of that morning. Have mercy upon us, O Jesus!

4 The heavens shall ring with an anthem more grand Than ever on earth was recorded. The blest of the Lord shall receive at His hand The crown to the victors awarded. Have mercy upon us, O Jesus!

Sermon “An Invitation for God’s Love” Matthew 22:1-14

Stand

Nicene Creed C I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible.

And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end.

And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life T of the world to come. Amen.

Preface

It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who on this day overcame death and the grave and by His glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting life. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying:

12

Sanctus

Prayer of Thanksgiving P Blessed are You, Lord of heaven and earth, for You have had mercy on those whom You created and sent Your only-begotten Son into our flesh to bear our sin and be our Savior. With repentant joy we receive the salvation accomplished for us by the all-availing sacrifice of His body and His blood on the cross.

Gathered in the name and the remembrance of Jesus, we beg You, O Lord, to forgive, renew, and strengthen us with Your Word and Spirit. Grant us faithfully to eat His body and drink His blood as He bids us do in His own testament. Gather us together, we pray, from the ends of the earth to celebrate with all the faithful the marriage feast of the Lamb in His kingdom, which has no end. Graciously receive our prayers; deliver and preserve us. To You alone, O Father, be all glory, honor, and worship, with the Son and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C Amen.

13

Lord's Prayer

C Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

The Words of Our Lord P Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is My T body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.”

P In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My T blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

Distribution Hymn ~“Soul, Adorn Yourself with Gladness” (Sunday) ...... Hymn 636

1 Soul, adorn yourself with gladness, Leave the gloomy haunts of sadness, Come into the daylight’s splendor, There with joy your praises render. Bless the One whose grace unbounded This amazing banquet founded; He, though heav’nly, high, and holy, Deigns to dwell with you most lowly.

2 Hasten as a bride to meet Him, And with loving rev’rence greet Him. For with words of life immortal He is knocking at your portal. Open wide the gates before Him, Saying, as you there adore Him: Grant, Lord, that I now receive You, That I nevermore will leave You.

15

3 He who craves a precious treasure Neither cost nor pain will measure; But the priceless gifts of heaven God to us has freely given. Though the wealth of earth were proffered, None could buy the gifts here offered: Christ’s true body, for you riven, And His blood, for you once given.

4 Now in faith I humbly ponder Over this surpassing wonder That the bread of life is boundless Though the souls it feeds are countless: With the choicest wine of heaven Christ’s own blood to us is given. Oh, most glorious consolation, Pledge and seal of my salvation!

5 Jesus, source of lasting pleasure, Truest friend, and dearest treasure, Peace beyond all understanding, Joy into all life expanding: Humbly now, I bow before You; Love incarnate, I adore You; Worthily let me receive You And, so favored, never leave You.

6 Jesus, sun of life, my splendor, Jesus, friend of friends, most tender, Jesus, joy of my desiring, Fount of life, my soul inspiring: At Your feet I cry, my maker, Let me be a fit partaker Of this blessèd food from heaven, For our good, Your glory, given.

7 Lord, by love and mercy driven, You once left Your throne in heaven On the cross for me to languish And to die in bitter anguish, To forego all joy and gladness And to shed Your blood in sadness. By this blood redeemed and living, Lord, I praise You with thanksgiving. (Continued) 16

8 Jesus, bread of life, I pray You, Let me gladly here obey You. By Your love I am invited, Be Your love with love requited; By this Supper let me measure, Lord, how vast and deep love’s treasure. Through the gift of grace You give me As Your guest in heav’n receive me.

Hymn ~ “On What Has Now Been Sown” (Thursday) ...... Hymn 921

1 On what has now been sown Thy blessing, Lord, bestow; The pow’r is Thine alone To make it sprout and grow. Do Thou in grace the harvest raise, And Thou alone shalt have the praise!

2 To Thee our wants are known, From Thee are all our pow’rs; Accept what is Thine own And pardon what is ours. Our praises, Lord, and prayers receive, And to Thy Word a blessing give. 18

3 O grant that each of us, Now met before Thee here, May meet together thus When Thou and Thine appear And follow Thee to heav’n, our home. E’en so, amen, Lord Jesus, come!

Hymn ~ “Jesus, Thy Boundless Love to Me” (Sunday) ...... Hymn 683

1 Jesus, Thy boundless love to me No thought can reach, no tongue declare; Unite my thankful heart to Thee, And reign without a rival there! Thine wholly, Thine alone I am; Be Thou alone my constant flame.

2 O grant that nothing in my soul May dwell, but Thy pure love alone; Oh, may Thy love possess me whole, My joy, my treasure, and my crown! All coldness from my heart remove; My ev’ry act, word, thought be love.

3 This love unwearied I pursue And dauntlessly to Thee aspire. Oh, may Thy love my hope renew, Burn in my soul like heav’nly fire! And day and night, be all my care To guard this sacred treasure there.

4 In suff’ring be Thy love my peace, In weakness be Thy love my pow’r; And when the storms of life shall cease, O Jesus, in that final hour, Be Thou my rod and staff and guide, And draw me safely to Thy side!

22 Bulletin Announcements for October 11, 2020

WARM GREETINGS, FRIENDS! John 10:14, NRSV records Jesus as saying, “I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me ….” As the “flock” of Christ let us warmly greet one another and welcome all who have come to join us in worship. Remember, “We love because he first loved us” (1 John 4:19, NRSV). If you are visiting, please take time to sign your name in our guest book and introduce yourself to one of the pastors before you leave. Please join us again soon.

THE LORD'S SUPPER is celebrated at this congregation in the confession and glad confidence that, as he says, our Lord gives into our mouths not only bread and wine but his very body and blood (Matthew 26:26-28) to eat and to drink for the forgiveness of sins and to strengthen our union with him and with one another. Our Lord invites to his table those who trust his words, repent of all sin, and set aside any refusal to forgive and love as he forgives and loves us, that they may show forth his death until he comes. Because those who eat and drink our Lord's body and blood unworthily do so to their great harm (1 Corinthians 11:28-30) and because Holy Communion is a confession of the faith which is confessed at this altar, (1 Corinthians 10:16-18) any who are not yet instructed, in doubt, or who hold a confession differing from that of this congregation and The Lutheran Church- Missouri Synod, and yet desire to receive the sacrament, are asked first to speak with one of the pastors.

THE FRONT PEW ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE SANCTUARY is reserved during communion services for those that have physical difficulty approaching the altar for communion. Communion services are held the second and fourth Sunday of each month. Please be seated in that pew if you would like the pastor to bring communion to you.

Matt. 22:5 – “But they paid no attention and went off, one to his farm, another to his business.” The invitation to join God in His feast and in His work is easily ignored. The rest of life seems so much more pressing, and we always think there will be another time when we can catch back up with God. But what joys are we missing when we set aside God’s invitation to join Him in His plans and purposes? What inheritance are we trading for the world’s bowl of pottage?
