Fact Sheet for Immediate Release OVERVIEW OPERATION The White Village operates from the 1st of April until the 31st of October each year. DESTINATION The White Village rests in the upper side of Lachania, a beautiful picturesque village located southwest at the foot of the mountains that occupy the interior of the island, offering a panoramic view of the valleys stretching up to the sea. Its picture postcard setting, remoteness and tranquility give Lachania village a special charm all of its own. It retains its traditional village centre with narrow streets, jostling traditional houses, many of which have been lovingly restored to their former glory. Most of the well -maintained traditional houses have been bought by foreigners (mainly Germans) or else by people from Rhodes town, who are discriminating enough to appreciate the village and have settled here, creating a youthful and artistic community. Platanos traditional tavern is located in Lachania, while other suggested restaurants and bars such us Mojito Beach Bar are only 5 min drive from the White Village. The village is easily accessible by car, located 73 km from the city of Rhodes and 76 km from Diagoras International Airport. Parking for all types of vehicles is available on site free of charge. THE CONCEPT Since the village has been known for years as the meeting point of artists from all over Europe, the aim of the White Village architects was to orchestrate a complex array of interior and exterior spaces, which would harmonically combine tradition with minimalist and modern facilities. While giving an intense attention to detail through decorating ideas, the property laid out on 1500 m², adapted unique elements from the village and enriched them through innovative inspirations. Therefore, the design intention was to seamlessly blend the structure of the White Village into the texture of the existing traditional village. All bedrooms contain luxurious COCO-MAT mattresses and luxury items such as of fine linen, towels, and natural bath amenities. Specially executed forged-cement technique has been used in many parts of the interior of the Villas giving aesthetically the feeling of Aegean architecture. The Villas offer spacious and comfortable living rooms with soft couches and fire place on one side and a fully equipped kitchen on the other side, both being elegantly separated by different levels as well as a beautiful arch in the middle of the room. Traditional style sitting areas are set on a large elevated wooden platform, called by locals ‚sofas‛ or ‚pataros‛, while in an effort to retain the image of the old village houses, white washed reeds with wooden beams have been used for the living room’s ceiling. It consists of a large living room, fireplace and kitchen, two bedrooms and two bathrooms. The modern kitchen is fully-equipped to meet high standards with appliances from well-known international brands. The modern furniture has been carefully chosen to symbolize the island’s calm yet enjoyable atmosphere. Two bedroom Villa with Hot Tub (4 people) One amazing 85 m² Villa for four people with private terrace and outdoor Jacuzzi. It consists of an open plan ground floor with living room, fireplace and kitchen. Two bedrooms with sea and mountain view and two bathrooms with either a bath tub or shower. Prasonisi, on the very edge of the island, the very famous paradise for windsurfers and kite surfers during summer time, is located only 15 min drive south from the White Village. Over the years, Prasonisi has become the number one windsurfing spot and meeting point in Europe. Prasonisi is the Greek word for "Green Island" and consists of two bays, the eastern and the western, in the middle of which rests a magnificent sandy beach which by separating these, makes the landscape look absolutely fantastic. The west side remains mostly wavy and that is why it is considered appropriate and suitable for experienced and professional surfers.

The island of Rhodes was chosen as a case study as it relies mostly on the exploitation of groundwater resources and faces serious water shortage problems due to the aquifers depletion. Alternatives are discussed and compared in contrast to the construction of storage dams so as to meet the urban demand up to the year 2040. Results may indicate that by using also financial incentives and management approaches, desalination powered by RES could be an attractive and environmentally friendly option in an effort to solve problems related to water quantity and quality in semi-arid regions with adequate Renewable Energy potential. 1.     Voyage naturaliste à Rhodes (7 au 27 avril 2003) Georges et Mireille Olioso, le Mail, 26230 Grignan (France) Considérations générales Il y a un important contraste entre la partie nord de l’île, avec une forte implantation touristique, et la partie sud, beaucoup moins peuplée, mais cela ne saurait durer vu le rythme des constructions. En cette saison, les touristes ne sont pas encore très nombreux et se cantonnent dans les sites historiques. La circulation est facile mais il convient de rester vigilent car, sur les deux grands axes côtiers, le code de la route (particulièrement les lignes blanches) n’est pas très bien respecté (c’est un euphémisme !). La nuit, c’est pire, attention aux rares feux tricolores vers 6h du matin, certains font comme s’ils n’existaient pas ! Quant aux limitations de vitesse … quand vous lisez 50 km/h, la plupart doivent lire 80 km/h… Les routes sont assez bien entretenues bien qu’on y rencontre parfois des trous de belle taille. L’essence sans plomb coûte entre 0,73 et 0,81 €, le diesel entre 0,69 et 0,75 €. Il y a de nombreux hôtels ouverts et des restaurants un peu partout, ouverts surtout le soir. Au point de vue ornithologique, nous sommes probablement tombés dans une situation météorologique des plus favorables qui nous a permis d’observer un grand nombre de migrateurs, certains très rares. Il convient de visiter en particulier toutes les embouchures de fleuves (il y en a pas mal), surtout sur la côte est. C’est cette côte qui voit arriver les migrateurs en provenance d’Afrique, et plus particulièrement la région la plus méridionale.

    RHODES ISLAND Rhodes town is the largest settlement and capital city of the island. It is famous as the ancient site of the Colossus (c 280BC), one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, and as the oldest inhabited medieval town in Europe. The total population of the city is roughly 100 000. Rhodes is one of the largest and most fertile of the Greek Islands, and is one of the most visited because of its combination of beaches, archaeological sites, and extensive medieval town. The climate is particularly good, with the weather typically sunny and mild. The island is usually counted as one of the Dodecanese, but due to its importance for travelers is considered separately here. The rock-rose is so prolific here that it has been named the 'Island of Roses,' though modern scholars doubt the ancient theory that the island's name comes from the Greek word for rose. While the northern coast is renowned for its lively tourist resorts the south offers tranquil beaches and a slower, simpler pace of life. One of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, it was constructed to celebrate Rhodes' victory over the ruler of Cyprus, Antigonus I Monophthalmus, whose son unsuccessfully besieged Rhodes in 305 BC.
