Season of 1703-1704 n the surface, this was a very quiet season. Tugging and hauling occur- O red behind the scenes, but the two companies coexisted quite politely for most of the year until a sour prologue exchange occurred in July. Our records for Drury Lane are virtually complete. They are much less so for Lincoln’s Inn Fields, which advertised almost not at all until 18 January 1704. At that time someone clearly made a decision to emulate Drury Lane’s policy of ad- vertising in London’s one daily paper. Neither this season nor the next did the LIF/Queen’s company advertise every day, but the ads become regular enough that we start to get a reasonable idea of their repertory. Both com- panies apparently permitted a lot of actor benefits during the autumn—pro- bably a sign of scanty receipts and short-paid salaries. Throughout the season advertisements make plain that both companies relied heavily on entr’acte song and dance to pull in an audience. Newspaper bills almost always mention singing and dancing, sometimes specifying the items in considerable detail, whereas casts are never advertised. Occasionally one or two performers will be featured, but at this date the cast seems not to have been conceived as the basic draw. Or perhaps the managers were merely economizing, treating newspaper advertisements as the equivalent of handbills rather than “Great Bills.” The importance of music to the public at this time is also evident in the numerous concerts of various sorts on offer, and in the founding of The Monthly Mask of Vocal Musick, a periodical devoted to printing new songs, including some from the theatre.1 One of the most interesting developments of this season is a ten-concert series generally advertised as “The Subscription Musick.” So far as we are aware, it has attracted no scholarly commentary whatever, but it may well be the first series of its kind in the history of music in London. -

The Student Senate Thition and Fee Review Committee met Thursday to make its final vote on student fees for next year. Following the committee's approval, the fee proposals must be approved by the Student Senate, vice president for student affairs, the President's Council and Eastern's Board of Trustees. The largest increase of the fees will come in the network fee, which will increase to $48 per semester to fund a 10-year network improvement project. Shrews, Moneylenders, Soldiers, and Moors: Tackling Challenging Issues in Shakespeare for Young Audiences DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Elizabeth Harelik, M.A. Graduate Program in Theatre The Ohio State University 2016 Dissertation Committee: Professor Lesley Ferris, Adviser Professor Jennifer Schlueter Professor Shilarna Stokes Professor Robin Post Copyright by Elizabeth Harelik 2016 Abstract Shakespeare’s plays are often a staple of the secondary school curriculum, and, more and more, theatre artists and educators are introducing young people to his works through performance. While these performances offer an engaging way for students to access these complex texts, they also often bring up topics and themes that might be challenging to discuss with young people. To give just a few examples, The Taming of the Shrew contains blatant sexism and gender violence; The Merchant of Venice features a multitude of anti-Semitic slurs; Othello shows characters displaying overtly racist attitudes towards its title character; and Henry V has several scenes of wartime violence. These themes are important, timely, and crucial to discuss with young people, but how can directors, actors, and teachers use Shakespeare’s work as a springboard to begin these conversations? In this research project, I explore twenty-first century productions of the four plays mentioned above. All of the productions studied were done in the United States by professional or university companies, either for young audiences or with young people as performers. I look at the various ways that practitioners have adapted these plays, from abridgments that retain basic plot points but reduce running time, to versions incorporating significant audience participation, to reimaginings created by or with student performers. -

Most historians of blindness discuss Stanley but merely repeat biographical material without adding any particular insights relating to his blindness. As for twentieth-century musicologists, they have largely ignored Stanley’s blindness. The conclusion is that Stanley’s blindness, despite being present in most of his reception, is not treated as a defining factor. This study pursues new questions about Stanley’s blindness. His disability is given pride of place, and perspectives from the fields of disability studies and minority studies are central to the work. A biographical sketch precedes a discussion of the role of Stanley’s blindness in his reception. The central role of Stanley’s amanuensis and sister-in-law, Anne Arlond, leads to a discussion of issues of gender, and the general invisibility of caregivers. Chapter 2 explores those aspects of Stanley’s life that required an engagement with literate music. -
