ABSTRACT Rejecting the Definitive: A Contextual Examination of Three Historical Stages of Atheism and the Legality of an American Freedom from Religion Ethan Gjerset Quillen, B.A., M.A., M.A. Mentor: T. Michael Parrish, Ph.D. The trouble with “definitions” is they leave no room for evolution. When a word is concretely defined, it is done so in a particular time and place. Contextual interpretations permit a better understanding of certain heavy words; Atheism as a prime example. In the post-modern world Atheism has become more accepted and popular, especially as a reaction to global terrorism. However, the current definition of Atheism is terribly inaccurate. It cannot be stated properly that pagan Atheism is the same as New Atheism. By interpreting the Atheisms from four stages in the term‟s history a clearer picture of its meaning will come out, hopefully alleviating the stereotypical biases weighed upon it. In the interpretation of the Atheisms from Pagan Antiquity, the Enlightenment, the New Atheist Movement, and the American Judicial and Civil Religious system, a defense of the theory of elastic contextual interpretations, rather than concrete definitions, shall be made. ABSTRACT On Science and Atheism: Whether Atheistic Belief is Scientifically Motivated Charles L. Jester Director: Gerald Cleaver, Ph.D. The intent of this paper is to explore the motivation behind the rejection of theistic religious faiths by modern atheist scientists, and whether it is justified to claim that this rejection is scientifically motivated. First, a brief background of the development of the contemporary schism between faith and science is given, noting in particular changes in belief amongst the scientific community. Next, an exposition on the motivations for scientists’ convictions concerning God is laid out, followed by an address to the question of whether atheistic scientists reject all properties of God, or only certain of them. Based on analyses of personal statements, statistical data on beliefs, and developments in twentieth-century physics and mathematics, it is concluded that modern scientists who reject theism are not overwhelmingly motivated by science, and that they in fact do not reject all ideas of God. I. Definition of Atheism
1. THE MEANING OF ATHEISM i. Definition of Atheism The word ‘atheism’ is derived from the Greek: a meaning ‘not’ is conjoined with theos meaning ‘god’. So we may define atheism as follows: it is the belief that there is no God. Unfortunately definition of terms is rarely this straightforward and here too we find different shades of meaning. For example, there is: Constructive atheism Epistemological atheism Practical atheism Nihilistic atheism Axiological Atheism Reductionary Atheism and many others besides. We shall encounter some of these forms of atheism as we proceed Negative and through this book. I wish, however, to keep matters simple. So let us divide positive atheism atheism into two types: there is negative atheism and there is positive atheism. A negative atheist (sometimes also called a weak or implicit atheist) is somebody whoSAMPLE is simply devoid of any religious belief. When speaking of God to such a person, he or she has no idea what you are talking about, nothing comes to mind, and one is greeted with a blank stare. On these grounds, the writer George H. Smith, in his book Atheism: The Case Against God (1979), argues that young children, because they are ignorant of religion, must be classified as atheists.1 More usually, however, the term ‘atheist’ is applied to adults, to those who have never shown the slightest interest in the question of whether or not God exists, either through lack of education or more often through total indifference. Positive atheists, on the other hand, are not like this. These are people (sometimes also called strong or explicit atheists) who know something of religion and who for a variety of reasons reject its central claim that a god exists. -

Halevy, Halivni and The Oral Formation of the Babylonian Talmud Ari Bergmann Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2014 © 2014 Ari Bergmann All rights reserved ABSTRACT Halevy, Halivni and The Oral Formation of the Babylonian Talmud Ari Bergmann This dissertation is dedicated to a detailed analysis and comparison of the theories on the process of the formation of the Babylonian Talmud by Yitzhak Isaac Halevy and David Weiss Halivni. These two scholars exhibited a similar mastery of the talmudic corpus and were able to combine the roles of historian and literary critic to provide a full construct of the formation of the Bavli with supporting internal evidence to support their claims. However, their historical construct and findings are diametrically opposed. Yitzhak Isaac Halevy presented a comprehensive theory of the process of the formation of the Talmud in his magnum opus Dorot Harishonim. The scope of his work was unprecedented and his construct on the formation of the Talmud encompassed the entire process of the formation of the Bavli, from the Amoraim in the 4th century to the end of the saboraic era (which he argued closed in the end of the 6th century). Halevy was the ultimate guardian of tradition and argued that the process of the formation of the Bavli took place entirely within the amoraic academy by a highly structured and coordinated process and was sealed by an international rabbinical assembly. While Halevy was primarily a historian, David Weiss Halivni is primarily a talmudist and commentator on the Talmud itself. -

Indeed, this rapport has always been, in and throughout the history of Western thought, a complex one. From mutual exclusion to the efforts of synthesizing or conciliating both in one unifying discourse, to the numerous projects where one seeks to subjugate or contain the other, the alliance between philosophy and monotheism has never ceased to trouble philosophers and theologians alike. According to which idea and from which place can one maintain the singularities of both philosophical logos and monotheism whilst assuring the incontestable effects they both cause on each other? Undoubtedly, and in order to deploy our interpretative hypothesis, we will focus on the intricate dynamic between Judaism and Christianity and how this dynamic has surged in the history of philosophical thought. Consequently, our interpretative gesture will consist in developing three ideas – sacrifice, election, justice – by which is opened a certain address of both philosophical logos and monotheism. This address will show how and why both philosophical logos and monotheism incessantly read one into the other, inform and awaken each other whilst, at the same time, always fail to seize, comprehend or understand the singularity of the other. -
The Origin of Antisemitism
First Congregational United Church of Christ – Eugene, Oregon THE ORIGIN OF ANTISEMITISM III “Five Primary Sources” **** In their provocative book entitled Why the Jews, Dennis Prager and Joseph Telushkin identify five primary sources of antisemitism: (1) Belief in the Oneness of God (ethical monotheism); (2) adherence to a specific set of laws and teachings to govern life (Torah); (3) identification with the people and nation of Israel (Jewish Nationhood); (4) their claim to be “the chosen people of God” (chosen-ness); and (5) their higher quality of life (exemplary achievement), have all challenged, and even threatened, the gods, laws, and culture of non-Jews among whom they have lived throughout history. Let us look at each of these sources of antisemitism. Ethical Monotheism In the ancient world, every nation worshiped its own gods and acknowledged the legitimacy of others’ gods—except the Jews. The Jews declared that the gods of other people were “nonsense” and that only their God existed as the creator of all things. Furthermore, it was their God had who had decreed the moral law by which they and all others were expected to live. Is it any wonder that non-Jews have resented this theological and moral challenge ever since? When the Christian church was born out of Judaism, it did so embracing the God of the Jews, but it also insisted on the divinity of Jesus, thereby compromising Jewish monotheism and inviting Jewish rejection of Jesus as “the divine Son of God.” This ignited the virulent antisemitism of the Christian church which continued throughout the centuries.
