  • Biathle-Triathle Spotlight: Athletes Return to Competition in Egypt, Portugal, Germany and Georgia
19 AUG 2021 BIATHLE-TRIATHLE SPOTLIGHT: ATHLETES RETURN TO COMPETITION IN EGYPT, PORTUGAL, GERMANY AND GEORGIA The gradual resumption of UIPM Sports in many countries and continents has been good news for Biathle and Triathle athletes, many of whom see the multi-discipline sports as a springboard to Modern Pentathlon. The UIPM 2021 Biathle-Triathle National Tour has enabled athletes of all ages to compete in Egypt, Portugal, Germany and Georgia this year, while Kazakhstan hosted the Open Biathle & Triathle Asian Championships. Hurghada (EGY) gets the ball rolling Egypt has been one of the most active nations in the restart of UIPM Sports in 2021 and the resort of Hurghada hosted an early instalment of the UIPM 2021 Biathle-Triathle National Tour (BTNT) on April 2. The tournament was the final competition opportunity for Egyptian athletes to boost their ranking and earn selection for the the UIPM 2021 Biathle-Triathle World Championships in Weiden (GER). A spokesperson for the local organising committee said: “More than 400 athletes participated in good weather. All athletes and coaches were satisfied with the organization and results.” Sporting holidays in Machico (POR) The city of Machico on the island of Madeira held the BTNT, as well as the fourth stage of Laser Run Portugal Tour 2021, on June 27. Machico is becoming a popular Biathle-Triathle destination having organised the European Championships in 2019 and now preparing for the UIPM World Championships in 2022. A spokesperson for the local organising committee said: “It was a beautiful June Saturday, with perfect weather and great water conditions for the swimming section.

  • Sport Awards 2018 Foreword
Sport Awards 2018 Foreword The annual Sports Awards is a highlight of the Western Cape Government’s calendar. The Awards recognise and officially acknowledge the esteemed excellence of sportspeople hailing from the Western Cape. Today, we pay tribute to the exemplary role these individuals have played in the development of sport and motivating others to achieve more. I wholeheartedly thank each sportsperson awarded their prestigious acknowledgement for serving as a beacon of hope to all in the Western Cape. Their perseverance, focus and positive choices have groomed them into significant role-models to whom youth can aspire. Excellence in their respective sporting codes requires dedication, motivation and many hours of practice, but also most importantly support and encouragement from significant others: family, friends, coaches, managers and others. Heartfelt gratitude is expressed to them for their continuous support and encouragement toward our sporting success. History has shown time and again that sport has the ability to bring diverse groups of people together and I firmly believe our honoured sport stars personify this notion. They also promote a healthy lifestyle in which they contribute to increasing wellness and safety in the Western Cape and for that I thank you profusely. Western Cape Provincial Sports Awards 2018 1 By celebrating our victories and achievements we create a spirit of goodwill and social inclusivity that ultimately binds us all better together. In closing, a special word of thanks to all the DCAS team players for your hard work, dedication and professionalism in making the Sports Awards a proud occasion. Anroux Marais Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport Western Cape Government 2 Western Cape Provincial Sports Awards 2018 Volunteer of The Year Charmaine Mostert – Cape Winelands Bowls Charmaine has broadened horizons of the bowling world over the years with administration, promotion and development of bowls throughout the Cape Winelands district and more recently the Western Cape.

The Executive Board also got together in the two days prior to the Congress. Both meetings were chaired by UIPM President Dr h. c. Klaus Schormann, and in both he welcomed all the delegates and paid special thanks to the efforts of General Charalambos Lottas, President of the Cyprus Modern Pentathlon Biathlon Association and Secretary General of the Cyprus Olympic Committee, for hosting everyone in Limassol. It was also Shiny Fang’s first Congress as Secretary General following her election to the post in 2012. The names of the 2013 Best Competitions were announced as the Biathle Triathle World Championships Limassol won the Development award, World Cup #3 Chengdu took Best Promoted, Champion of Champion Qatar claimed the Best New Competition and the Best Overall went to World Cup Final Nizhny Novgorod. The bulk of the discussions centred on the motions presented at this Congress with much debating over the structure of the fencing ladder system. In the end most of the voting was in favour of the introduction of this new concept, with 2014 season set to be a testing phase. An Ad hoc working group of experts has been put together to present various options for the ladder to the fencing system to be tried in competition from as early as January. There were also several new Member Federations welcomed into the Modern Pentathlon family during the Congress as UIPM continued its development drive with the focus on grassroots programs to grow participation at all levels.
