Index to the Historical Archives of the Town Of INDEX TO THE HISTORICAL ARCHIVES OF THE TOWN OF SALEM SALEM, NY WASHINGTON COUNTY HISTORIAN'S COLLECTION DR. ASA FITCH HISTORICAL SOCIETY COLLECTION Revised January 2016 William Cormier, Historian The following lists contain the archival records of the village of Salem and represent only a part of all administrative records generated by the village. The archives contain those records, pictures, artifacts, correspondence, etc. which have and will have administrative, legal, research and historical value. Without these records much of our history would be lost forever. In 1992, a grant from the NYS Archives and Records Administration (SARA) enabled the town and village of Salem to begin the process of sorting, inventorying, preserving and cataloging the town and village records. In addition to the actual records, a growing microfilm collection, which consists of local newspapers, vital records, town minutes and the Dr. Asa Fitch Jr. Journals, was created. Microfilming was made possible through a Washington County SARA grant. In the 1994-95 year, a New York State LGRMIF grant made possible an historical archives indexing project. This project was completed through the efforts of William A. Cormier, historian and grant coordinator; Dorothy Shane, archival clerk; and Patricia Baltz, typist and proof reader, with the cooperation from Mary Kilpatrick, town clerk and Peg Culver, librarian. At present, Salem's village archives are housed in the History Room off the Bancroft Library in the Proudfit Building. Other village records, kept by the village clerk, village justice, and fire department, are found in the village office in the Proudfit Building. Inactive records are stored in the Inactive Record Storage Room in the Proudfit Building. Since access to these materials is limited to village office and Bancroft Library open hours, and because the use of archival materials is governed by our research application policy, the public is requested to call ahead for an appointment. Correspondingly, the village historian will meet with researches on an appointment basis. Most recently, William A. Cormier, historian, and Dolores Phaneuf, archival clerk, updated the village of Salem historical index, and through a 2004-2005 LRGMIF Historical Archive Project, created a new and separate index for the town of Salem historical archives located in the old Washington County Courthouse building. Researches are directed to check both indexes in their search for information. Thanks go to Mary Kilpatrick, town clerk, for her cooperation. The organization of materials and finding aids format for the archives was based on Guidelines for Arrangement and Description of Archives and Manuscripts: A Manual for Historical Records Programs in New York State, 1995. • Introduction to the Ratification of the Constitution in New York
Introduction to the Ratification of the Constitution in New York During the decade preceding the War for Independence, New York was divided into two large provincial factions—the Delanceys and the Livingstons. When independence neared, the Delanceys were in power and they remained loyal to the king. The opposition to British imperial policy consisted of three groups—the radical elements led by New York City mechanics who advocated independence from Great Britain, a very conservative group that wanted reconciliation, and another conservative group that wanted to delay independence but would not give up key colonial rights. Because conservatives controlled the third Provincial Congress, that body gave no instructions on the question of independence to New York’s delegates to the Second Continental Congress meeting in Philadelphia. Not being instructed, the New York delegation, standing alone, did not vote on independence on 2 July 1776. Earlier, in response to the Continental Congress’ resolution of 15 May 1776, the third Provincial Congress had called on the electors in the different counties to elect a fourth provincial congress which might draft a constitution creating a state government. The election took place and the new Provincial Congress on 9 July resolved unanimously to join the other colonies in declaring independence. The next day it renamed itself the Provincial Convention. On 1 August the Convention appointed a committee of thirteen to draft a state constitution and to report by 26 August. The committee did not report until 12 March 1777. After almost six weeks of debate, the Convention on 20 April voted “in the name and by the authority of the good people of this State” to adopt the constitution.

  • HBO: Brand Management and Subscriber Aggregation: 1972-2007
1 HBO: Brand Management and Subscriber Aggregation: 1972-2007 Submitted by Gareth Andrew James to the University of Exeter as a thesis for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English, January 2011. This thesis is available for Library use on the understanding that it is copyright material and that no quotation from the thesis may be published without proper acknowledgement. I certify that all material in this thesis which is not my own work has been identified and that no material has previously been submitted and approved for the award of a degree by this or any other University. ........................................ 2 Abstract The thesis offers a revised institutional history of US cable network Home Box Office that expands on its under-examined identity as a monthly subscriber service from 1972 to 1994. This is used to better explain extensive discussions of HBO‟s rebranding from 1995 to 2007 around high-quality original content and experimentation with new media platforms. The first half of the thesis particularly expands on HBO‟s origins and early identity as part of publisher Time Inc. from 1972 to 1988, before examining how this affected the network‟s programming strategies as part of global conglomerate Time Warner from 1989 to 1994. Within this, evidence of ongoing processes for aggregating subscribers, or packaging multiple entertainment attractions around stable production cycles, are identified as defining HBO‟s promotion of general monthly value over rivals. Arguing that these specific exhibition and production strategies are glossed over in existing HBO scholarship as a result of an over-valuing of post-1995 examples of „quality‟ television, their ongoing importance to the network‟s contemporary management of its brand across media platforms is mapped over distinctions from rivals to 2007.

Born in Lon- don in 1751, Abbot sailed for Virginia in July 1773, with orders for both actual specimens and drawings of the local insects. For the next two years he continued to collect and paint, sending home three insect collections, although only one arrived safely. The loss of these two valuable collections at sea together with the worry over political unrest in Virginia led Abbot to move to Georgia. He settled in St. George Parish (later Burke County), Georgia in December 1775. Abbot traveled widely throughout Georgia devoting his time to the study of the natural flora and fauna.
