Filter Performance Comparisons For Some Common Nebulae By Dave Knisely Light Pollution and various “nebula” filters have been around since the late 1970’s, and amateurs have been using them ever since to bring out detail (and even some objects) which were difficult to impossible to see before in modest apertures. When I started using them in the early 1980’s, specific information about which filter might work on a given object (or even whether certain filters were useful at all) was often hard to come by. Even those accounts that were available often had incomplete or inaccurate information. Getting some observational experience with the Lumicon line of filters helped, but there were still some unanswered questions. I wondered how the various filters would rank on- average against each other for a large number of objects, and whether there was a “best overall” filter. In particular, I also wondered if the much-maligned H-Beta filter was useful on more objects than the two or three targets most often mentioned in publications. In the summer of 1999, I decided to begin some more comprehensive observations to try and answer these questions and determine how to best use these filters overall. I formulated a basic survey covering a moderate number of emission and planetary nebulae to obtain some statistics on filter performance to try to address the following questions: 1. How do the various filter types compare as to what (on average) they show on a given nebula? 2. Is there one overall “best” nebula filter which will work on the largest number of objects? 3. -

The electronically isolated multichromophoric systems could then ultimately be tested in electron transfer studies for their applicability as photosynthesis mimics. Initially, 1,4-diethynylcubane was employed as the rigid isolating scaffold and one to two porphyrins were reacted with it in order to obtain the coupled product(s). Pd-catalysed Sonogashira cross-coupling reactions were used to try and achieve these bisporphyrin complexes. -

On leaving the planetarium, turn around and look northwards over the roof of the building. Close to the horizon is a group of stars like the outline of a saucepan with the handle stretching to your left. This is the Plough (also called the Big Dipper) and is part of the constellation Ursa Major, the Great Bear. The two right-hand stars are called the Pointers. Can you tell that the higher of the two, Dubhe is slightly yellowish compared to the lower, Merak? Check with binoculars. Not all stars are white. The colour shows that Dubhe is cooler than Merak in the same way that red-hot is cooler than white- hot. 2. Use the Pointers to guide you upwards to the next bright star. This is Polaris, the Pole (or North) Star. Note that it is not the brightest star in the sky, a common misconception. Below and to the left are two prominent but fainter stars. These are Kochab and Pherkad, the Guardians of the Pole. Look carefully and you will notice that Kochab is slightly orange when compared to Polaris. -

I would like to thank the Nobel Assembly of the Karolinska Institutet for the opportunity to describe some recent work on RNA-triggered gene silencing. First a few disclaimers, however. Telling the full story of gene silencing would be a mammoth enterprise that would take me many years to write and would take you well into the night to read. So we’ll need to abbreviate the story more than a little. Second (and as you will see) we are only in the dawn of our knowledge; so consider the following to be primer... the best we could do as of December 8th, 2006. And third, please understand that the story that I am telling represents the work of several generations of biologists, chemists, and many shades in between. I’m pleased and proud that work from my labo- ratory has contributed to the field, and that this has led to my being chosen as one of the messengers to relay the story in this forum. At the same time, I hope that there will be no confusion of equating our modest contributions with those of the much grander RNAi enterprise. Minkin1 Received: 16 November 2018 /Accepted: 1 January 2019 /Published online: 10 January 2019 # Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2019 Abstract Using the DFT methods, we computationally predict the stability of cage compounds E4nRn (E = B, C; R = H, F; n = 4, 8, 12, 24) based on Platonic bodies and Archimedean polyhedrons in which all vertices are replaced by tetrahedral E4R fragments. Cage compounds B60R12 and C60 with pyramidal units B5RorC5 are also examined and it is shown that only boron compounds are stable. The nature of chemical bonding in the discussed compounds is analyzed using the AdNDP and NBO methods. The hydrocarbons have classical 2c-2e C-C σ-bonds, while the boron compounds are formed by the polyhedral units with the delocalized multicenter bonds which connected three and more boron atoms. The new example of spherical aromaticity accord- 2 ing to the 2(N+1) rule in the case of B16F4 with multicenter 16c-2e bonds are revealed. Stable compound B60H12 contains 12 5c- 2e B-B bonds.
