L.O. 4-1 ^4- NUI MAYNOOTH QllftMll II hiJfiifin Ui Mu*« MILITARY AVIATION IN IRELAND 1921- 1945 By MICHAEL O’MALLEY THESIS FOR THE DEGREE OF PHD DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY NATIONAL UNIVERSITY OF IRELAND MAYNOOTH Supervisor of Research: Dr. Ian Speller JANUARY 2007 IRISH MILITARY AVIATION 1921 - 1945 This thesis initially sets out to examine the context of the purchase of two aircraft, on the authority of Michael Collins and funded by the second Dail, during the Treaty negotiations of 1921. The subsequent development of civil aviation policy including the regulation of civil aviation, the management of a civil aerodrome and the possible start of a state sponsored civil air service to Britain or elsewhere is also explained. Michael Collins’ leading role in the establishment of a small Military Air Service in 1922 and the role of that service in the early weeks of the Civil War are examined in detail. The modest expansion in the resources and role of the Air Service following Collins’ death is examined in the context of antipathy toward the ex-RAF pilots and the general indifference of the new Army leadership to military aviation. The survival of military aviation - the Army Air Corps - will be examined in the context of the parsimony of Finance, and the administrative traumas of demobilisation, the Anny mutiny and reorganisation processes of 1923/24. The manner in which the Army leadership exercised command over, and directed aviation policy and professional standards affecting career pilots is examined in the contexts of the contrasting preparations for war of the Army and the Government. -

DRAFT Gloucestershire First 26 April 07 THE GLOUCESTERSHIRE URBAN ECONOMIC STRATEGY 2007-2015 INTRODUCTION 1. Urban Gloucestershire lies astride the M5 and is made up of Gloucester City, Cheltenham Borough and parts of the Borough of Tewkesbury and Stroud District. With a total population of 310,800 and forecast by 2026 to be at least 370,800 this is a significant urban conurbation particularly in regional terms, as evidenced by the identification of Gloucester and Cheltenham in the draft Regional Spatial Strategy (RSS) as two of the regionally Strategically Significant Cities and Towns (SSCTs)1. Within the Gloucestershire economy this urban area plays a vital role. Defining Urban Gloucestershire Urban Gloucestershire cannot be delineated precisely on a map without limiting some initiatives unnecessarily. In general it is those geographical areas of the Central Vale that have a concentration of people and businesses that by working together can complement one another and increase the economy of Gloucestershire. It therefore includes the whole of Gloucester City and Cheltenham Borough. It also will generally include, within Tewkesbury Borough, Tewkesbury Town and Ashchurch as well as the parishes of Brockworth, Hucclecote, Churchdown, Innsworth, Longford and embraces Gloucestershire Airport and Dowty/Smiths, although there are some aspects of these that are also 'rural' and will also be covered by the Gloucestershire Rural Economic Strategy. Similarly it will also generally include in Stroud District the settlements of Hardwicke and those others that comprise the defined Stroud Urban Area: Stonehouse, Stroud, Thrupp, North and South Woodchester and Nailsworth, although parts of these are also 'rural'. Economic and administrative boundaries are not identical. -

GENERAL AVIATION REPORT GUIDANCE – December 2013 Changes from November 2013 version Annex C – Wick Airport updated to reflect that it is approved for 3rd country aircraft imports No other changes to November version Introduction These instructions have been produced by Border Force are designed and published for General Aviation1 pilots, operators and owners of aircraft. They help you to complete and submit a General Aviation Report (GAR) and inform you about the types of airport you can use to make your journey. The instructions explain: - What a General Aviation Report (GAR) is What powers are used to require a report Where aircraft can land and take off When you are asked to submit a General Aviation Report (GAR); When, how and where to send the GAR How to complete the GAR How GAR information is used Custom requirements when travelling to the UK The immigration and documentation requirements to enter the UK What to do if you see something suspicious What is a General Aviation Report (GAR)? General Aviation pilots, operators and owners of aircraft making Common Travel Area2 and international journeys in some circumstances are required to report their expected journey to the Police and/or the Border Force command of the Home Office. Border Force and the Police request that the report is made using a GAR. The GAR helps Border Force and the Police in securing the UK border and preventing crime and terrorism. What powers are used to require a report? An operator or pilot of a general aviation aircraft is required to report in relation to international or Channel Islands journeys to or from the UK, unless they are travelling outbound directly from the UK to a destination in the European Union as specified under Sections 35 and 64 of the Customs & 1 The term General Aviation describes any aircraft not operating to a specific and published schedule 2 The Common Travel Area is comprised of Great Britain, Northern Ireland, Ireland, the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands Excise Management Act 1979.
