LOCAL HOUSING NEEDS SURVEY

Don’t forget to look out for your survey.....

x Would you like to move but cannot find or afford a suitable home in Felsham? x Do you have children who cannot afford to live nearby? x Are you concerned about the type of housing that may be provided in the village?

We are asking all residents and those with a connection to the village to complete a Housing Needs Questionnaire. The questionnaire will be delivered to your home sometime over the first weekend of September 2020 and we would urge you to complete and return it so that we can identify any local affordable housing needs and find out what aspirations people might have for future housing in Felsham. Keep an eye out for your forms and please take a moment to complete and return them, the more people who voice their wishes the better equipped Councillors will be to make the best decisions for Felsham.

September is the only month with the same number of letters in its name as the number of the month: it is the ninth month and has nine letters.

The birthstone for September is the sapphire, which is found in many different colours but is most well known for being a bright, vivid blue colour. The sapphire is known for representing wisdom, good fortune, truth, and power.

September (from the Latin septem, seven) was the seventh month of the old Roman calendar.

Zodiac signs in September are split between Virgo (August 23 – September 22) and Libra (September 23 – October 22)

Historic fact -The Great Fire of London started on 2 September 1666, completely destroying the old city located within the ancient Roman Walls. It was believed to have started in a bakery and took three days to put out.

20 Felsham and Gedding Village News, Issue 199 September 2020 AppleCrumble Cake

Preparation time less than 30 mins Cooking time 30 mins to 1 hour

Serves 12

This comforting apple crumble cake is equally good with a cup of tea or warmed up for dessert.

Ingredients For the crumble topping x 100g/3½oz plain flour x 70g/2½oz cold butter, cut into small pieces x 75g/2¾oz demerara or light brown sugar

 For the cake

x 100g/3½oz caster sugar

x 100g/3½oz unsalted butter, at room temperature, plus extra for greasing

x 2 large free-range eggs

x 100g/3½oz plain flour 1½ tsp baking powder

x 4 dessert apples

x 1 unwaxed lemon, finely grated zest and juice

x ½ tsp ground cinnamon Method 1. Preheat the oven to 180C/160C Fan/Gas 4. Grease the sides of a 20cm/8in square cake tin and line the base with baking paper.

2. To make the crumble topping, rub the flour and butter together with the tips of your fingers until the mixture resembles rough breadcrumbs. (You can also pulse the ingredients together briefly in a food processor.) Stir in the sugar. Put in the fridge until needed.

3. To make the cake, beat the sugar and butter together until light. Beat in the eggs one at a time, adding half the flour after you’ve beaten in the first egg, then stir in the rest of the flour and the baking powder.

4. Peel the apples, cut into quarters, cut out the core and cut each quarter into four long slices. Mix with the lemon zest and juice and cinnamon.

5. Spoon the cake mixture into the prepared tin. Place the apples on top and cover with the crumble topping. Bake the cake for 40 minutes, or until a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean. Leave to cool in the tin for 10 minutes, turn out the cake carefully onto a wire rack and then turn it over onto another wire rack so it’s crumble-side up.

6. Serve the apple crumble cake at room temperature or warm with cream. 21 Felsham and Gedding Village News, Issue 199 September 2020 Church Services

Don’t forget that washing your hands regularly for 20 seconds is one of the most effective ways to prevent the spread of the COVID 19 virus

22 Felsham and Gedding Village News, Issue 199 September 2020 Rev Sharon

Dear Friends,

A new term, a new school/university, the sense of new beginnings as we look towards Autumn. I have always loved September, and the way in which it heralds a change in the seasons. The weather, the fruits and the landscape bring with them such an assault on the senses.

However, this year of course will be very different as we continue to live in a new way, with ever changing and challenging horizons.

Our young people have suffered under the Covid-19 restrictions, particularly in relation to their examination results which for many has meant a change in their plans, and their hopes and dreams. As I listened to some of them on the radio recently, saying how their lives had been shattered, it reminded me of the fact that many young people are still engaged in slave labour across the world.

This was also true of our own country in the past, and Anthony Ashley Cooper, otherwise known as Lord Shaftesbury, fought endlessly, both in Parliament and outside it, to protect the poor, and especially the children, many of whom slaved in factories, worked down the mines or clambered up chimneys to clean them.

The statue of Eros in Piccadilly Circus is a memorial to him, but a far greater memorial are the various Acts of Parliament which protect children. Much has been achieved in recent times to go even further than Lord Shaftesbury to ensure that children are safe in every aspect of their lives.

I know how difficult it is for parents and carers of young people to balance the needs of their children to become independent against the fear of them having bad experiences out in the world.

I pray for every family that has teenagers who are about to start a new course or apprenticeship, or work experience, or even a job. And for those where none of the above apply. Let us all pray for our teenagers, and for their growing-into-adulthood years. May they be blessed with fun and happiness as well as hard work! with every blessing,

Revd Sharon Potter Rector of the Cockfield Benefice
