Presentation by Belize 1-PM_Caraibes14 corr07 9/03/07 16:55 Page 6 Préface Depuis dix ans déjà, le Comité du patrimoine mondial a entamé un processus de révision, aussi urgent que nécessaire, des manifestes déséquilibres géographiques, thématiques ou typologiques dans la Liste du patrimoine mondial, en s’engageant à entreprendre des actions pour faire face à toutes absences éventuelles et progresser vers des représentations plus uniformes et équilibrées des valeurs exceptionnelles universelles de sites non encore inscrits. Le fait que l’archéologie de la région des Caraïbes n’ait pas trouvé une place dans la Liste du patri- moine mondial exigeait une réflexion plus affinée. Les travaux présentés ici nous éclairent sur les causes ayant provoqué ces absences mais, ce qui est plus important encore, nous confirment la richesse et la diversité du patrimoine archéologique dans la région. De par sa propre physionomie géographique et historique, la région des Caraïbes est un lieu dont l’identité se définit par la prodigalité des échanges culturels constants entre contextes insulaires. Ce même espace d’échange a servi de cadre à notre réflexion pour identifier des méthodologies et des activités de coopération internationale apportant des mécanismes adaptés à l’identification, à la conservation, à la gestion et à la diffusion du patrimoine archéologique antillais dans le cadre de la Convention du patrimoine mondial culturel et naturel. We conducted a genetic survey of marine turtles in the Dominican Republic in order to link them with other rookeries around the Caribbean. We sequenced a 740bp fragment of the control region of the mitochondrial DNA of 92 samples from three marine turtle species [hawksbill (n = 48), green (n = 2) and leatherback (n = 42)], and incorporated published data from other nesting populations and foraging grounds. The leatherback turtle (Dermochelys coriacea) in the Dominican Republic appeared to be isolated from Awala-Yalimapo, Cayenne, Trinidad and St. Croix but connected with other Caribbean populations. Two distinct nesting populations of hawksbill turtles (Eremochelys imbricata) were detected in the Dominican Republic and exhibited interesting patterns of connectivity with other nesting sites and juvenile and adult male foraging aggregations. The green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas) has almost been extirpated from the Dominican Republic and limited inference could be made from our samples. Finally, results were compared with Lagrangian drifting buoys and published Lagrangian virtual particles that travelled through the Dominican Republic and Caribbean waters.
