Her first degree was from Queen Mary, University of London (English Literature, First Class BA hons), followed by a Master’s in Creative Writing at Royal Holloway. Alison Booth is Professor of English at the University of Virginia, and the author of Greatness Engendered: George Eliot and Virginia Woolf (Cornell University Press, 1992) and How to Make It as a Woman: Collective Biographical History from Victoria to the Present (University of Chicago Press, 2004; winner of the Barbara Penny Kanner prize). Editor of an essay collection, Famous Last Words: Changes in Gender and Narrative Closure (University Press of Virginia, 1993) and of the forth- coming Longman Cultural Edition of Wuthering Heights, she is also the co-editor, with Paul Hunter and Kelly Mays, of the Norton Introduction to Literature. With longstanding interests in the constructions of author- ship, literary history, gender, and narrative – in particular, collective biography, her research and teaching have spanned nineteenth- and twentieth-century British and American literature. Her articles have appeared in Victorian Studies, Journal of Victorian Culture, Kenyon Review, American Literary History, and elsewhere. Portions of her current book- length study, ‘Homes and Haunts: Transatlantic Author Country,’ are published or forthcoming in The Henry James Review, Nineteenth-Century Contexts, and Romanticism and Victorianism on the Net. She has served as president of the Society for the Study of Narrative Literature (2005), as co-organiser of the 3rd Annual North American Victorian Studies Association Conference (2005), and as judge of both Perkins (Narrative) and Lowell (MLA) book prizes. Shirley Foster is (semi-retired) Reader in English and American Literature at the University of Sheffield. Her research interests are in Victorian women’s fiction, especially Elizabeth Gaskell, and travel writing, both British and American. She has published widely in both areas, including a literary biography of Gaskell, a co-edited (with Sara Mills) anthology of women’s travel writing, and articles on nineteenth-century Americans vii 9780230_222816_01_prexii.indd vii 12/18/2008 3:38:03 PM viii Notes on the Contributors in Britain and Europe. She has also edited two of Gaskell’s novels, Sylvia’s Lovers for Penguin, and Mary Barton for World’s Classics. She is just start- ing new research on gardens and literature, a project undertaken with a colleague at the University of Wollongong, Australia. Sara Haslam is Lecturer in Literature at the Open University. She is the author of Fragmenting Modernism: Ford Madox Ford, The Novel and the Great War (2002) and editor of Ford’s England and the English (2003), as well as of Ford Madox Ford and the City (2005), the fourth volume of International Ford Madox Ford Studies. She has published essays on Ford, James, modernism, Chekhov and George Eliot, most recently writing on ‘The Good Soldier’ in the Blackwell Companion to Modernist Literature and Culture (2006), and has produced a CD-ROM, The Poetry of Thomas Hardy (2001). Current projects include a book, provisionally entitled ‘Victims of Time and Train’: from Victorian Invention to Modernist Novel. Erin Hazard received her PhD in art history from the University of Chicago in 2007, and is currently teaching in the University of Chicago’s Master of Arts Program in the Humanities. Her disserta- tion, ‘“Realized Day-dreams”: Excursions to Authors’ Homes’ examines nineteenth-century British and American authors’ homes both as archi- tecture and as exhibition sites between 1800 and 1950. An article of the same title is forthcoming in Nineteenth Century Studies. Her awards and honours include a Henry Luce/American Council of Learned Societies Dissertation Fellowship in American Art. Harald Hendrix is Professor of Italian Studies and heads the pro- gramme in Renaissance Studies at the University of Utrecht. Within the Utrecht Research Institute for History and Culture he leads the group on Textual Culture. He has published widely on the European reception of Italian Renaissance and Baroque authors (Traiano Boccalini fra erudizione e polemica; Olschki, 1995) and on the early modern aes- thetics of the non-beautiful. He is the editor of Writers’ Houses and the Making of Memory (Routledge, 2007) and has co-edited six volumes in the series, Utrecht Renaissance Studies (Amsterdam UP): De Vrouw in de Renaissance (1994), Kunstenaars en opdrachtgevers (1996), Oud en lelijk. Notes on the Contributors ix Gail Marshall is Reader in Nineteenth-century Literature at Oxford Brookes University. She is the author of Actresses on the Victorian Stage (Cambridge University Press, 1998) and books on Victorian fiction, as well as articles on subjects including Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Helen Faucit, Ellen Terry, and Victorian sculpture. She has edited volumes on George Eliot, Victorian Shakespeare and is editor of the Cambridge Companion to the Fin de Siècle (2007). She is in the process of finishing a monograph on Shakespeare and Victorian Women. Samantha Matthews is Lecturer in Victorian literature at the University of Sheffield, and has taught at Goldsmiths College and University College, London. She is the author of Poetical Remains: Poets’ Graves, Bodies, and Books in the Nineteenth Century (Oxford University Press, 2004), and has wide-ranging interests in the nineteenth century, par- ticularly in material culture, the cemetery, literary London, afterlife and reception theory, book history, the culture of albums and autographs, and reading practices. In the past tourism was considered a luxury of a few select people. Travel narratives were published and publicised in the form of brochures, mono- logues, newspaper accounts, novellas, novels, sketches and paintings. As the world evolved and travel became available to greater groups in society, these written staples captivated and inspired generations. The later part of the 20th century has ear marked the coming of age of Internet technology and traditional forms of tourist communication are being transformed into a more modern electronic version.
