The History andof Practice English Magic C Folklore and fairies, magic and madness, as seen through the mirror of Susanna Clarke’s acclaimed fantasy novel, Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell by John Reppion n March 2006 my wife, Leah, and I flew over to Dublin, Ireland for the first time in either of our lives as guests at the third annual Phoenix Convention (or P-Con, as most people Iknew it). The guest of honour that year was Susanna Clarke – author of Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell which had, at that point, already been out for eighteen months and won a Hugo Award. I, a chronically slow reader at the best of times, had not yet started reading the 800ish page novel, and I think that Leah was only part of the way through it. Nevertheless, we found that we got on well with Susanna and her partner, sci-fi writer Colin Greenland – who were both lovely, charming and funny – and the brief time we spent together over the course of the con was very enjoyable. It was perhaps two years later that I finally finished reading Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell. I have on 98 DARKLORE Vol. 9 The History and Practice of English Magic 99 only a couple of occasions in my life finished a book and at once turned published on The Daily Grail (www.dailygrail.com), now collected, to the front to begin reading it again. I thought about doing that with polished, and presented here for your consideration. Strange & Norrell but I am, as I have said, a very slow reader. -

IntRODUctION THE OSSETIAN EpIC “TALES OF THE NARTS” VASILY IvANOVICH ABAEV 1 w CYCLES, SubjECTS, HEROES In literary studies it is established that the epic poem passes through sev- eral stages in its formation. To begin we have an incomplete collection of stories with no connections between them, arising in various centers, at various times, for various reasons. That is the first stage in the formation of the epic. We cannot as yet name it such. But material is in the process of preparation that, given favorable conditions, begins to take on the out- lines of an epic poem. From the mass of heroes and subjects a few favorite names, events, and motifs stand out, and stories begin to crystallize around them, as centers of gravity. A few epic centers or cycles are formed. The epic enters the second stage of cycle formation. In a few instances, not all by any means, it may then attain a third stage. Cycles up to now unconnected may be, more or less artificially, united in one thematic thread, and are brought together in one consistent story, forming one epic poem. A hyper- cyclic formation, if one can use such a term, takes place. It may appear as the result of not only uniting several cycles, but as the expansion of one favorite cycle, at the expense of others less popular. This is the concluding epic phase. The transformation to this phase is frequently the result of individual creative efforts. Wilderness, the Body, Poetics, and the Crane: Curriculum in Four Parts Alexandra Fidyk University of Alberta Abstract: Written as a circuitous reflection on curricular lessons from nature, each of the four parts highlights endangered aspects of learning that if not attended will jeopardize who we are as a species. Attention to wilderness, non-dual consciousness, and the body, along with the centrality of instincts guide part one. Creation myths, wisdom traditions, and the Hermetic arts, including language and play, lead part two while body and nature maintain a necessary yet oft unrecognized container. The wild, poetics, and creativity shape part three, honouring the subtle role of language via the body. Part four brings the crane to the foreground, with its psychological symbolism as well as its anthropological and mythological history, an image to provoke curricular remembering of its ancestral roots. Together the four parts call for awareness to our forgotten bodily relations, as reflected in language and relationships with the natural world and all its life forms, while amplifying the storybird crane. THE NINE SPLEENS OF THE MARVELLOUS BOAR: AN INDO-EUROPEAN APPROACH TO A LITHUANIAN MYTH The Ditty of Sovijus (1261): The Ditty of Sovijus (1261): The Marvel the Nine Spleens Of an Indo-European lous Boar, Approach to a Lithuanian Myth PHILIPPE WALTER Abstract PHILIPPE WALTER In order to understand the narrative about Sovijus (1261), the author proposes a comparative analysis with similar myths in other Indo-European cultures: Hindu mythology (Indra), Irish mythology (Finn), and Scandinavian mythology (Sigurd). These myths emphasise the role of a sacred animal (Indra’s tricephalous monster, Finn’s salmon, Sigurd’s dragon, Sovijus’ boar with nine spleens). The animal allows the hero access to secret knowledge (divination in the case of Finn and Sigurd, revelation about cremation for Sovijus). Rituals or narratives of other folklore genres, such as tales, could be additional sources for a comparative analysis. APPENDIX III: THE PROTO-INDO-EUROPEANS III.1. PEOPLE The Proto-Indo-Europeans are the speakers of the reconstructed Proto-Indo-European language, a prehistoric people of the Chalcolithic and early Bronze Age. They are a group of people whose existence from around 4000 BCE is inferred from their language, Proto-Indo-European. Some things about their culture can be determined with confidence, based on the words reconstructed for their language: They used a kinship system based on relationships between men. The chief of their pantheon was djḗus patḗr (lit. ―sky father‖) and an earth god. They composed and recited heroic poetry or song lyrics, that used stock phrases like undying fame. The climate they lived in had snow. They were both pastoral and nomadic, domesticating cattle and horses. They had carts, with solid wheels, but not yet chariots, with spoked wheels. What is known about the Proto-Indo-Europeans with any certainty is the result of comparative linguistics, partly seconded by archaeology. The following traits are widely agreed-upon, but it should be understood that they are hypothetical by their reconstructed nature. The Proto-Indo-Europeans were a patrilineal society, probably semi-nomadic, relying on animal husbandry (notably cattle and sheep). They had domesticated the horse (ékwos). The cow (cṓus) played a central role, in religion and mythology as well as in daily life. A man's wealth would have been measured by the number of his animals (péku, the word for small livestock, acquired a meaning of ―value‖ in both English fee and in Latin pecunia). They practiced a polytheistic religion centered on sacrificial rites, probably administered by a priestly caste. -

When it comes to religion Hermeticism, as that exemplified through the Golden Dawn tradition, has always shown a quite liberal attitude to the personal profession of the member. Thus there are many opinions expressed concerning the Golden Dawn, both as an Order and Tradition, regarding if it either being Christian or pagan in its nature. In this essay I will express my own personal views and sentiments on the matter which doesn’t necessarily reflect any traditional or official policy of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. Although my views are largely the result and expression of my own experience with the Order and Tradition, and my particular initiatory process within its context, they still reflect my own personal revelation and attitude. Introduction It is my belief that “monotheism” is a simplified understanding that everything is the ONE ALL. However diversified it may appear to us in our mundane and terrestrial consciousness, there exists a true unity behind this apparent illusion. This transcendence of consciousness is what we should strive for in our theurgical, alchemical and mystical life, but also to bring the Spirit into the matter, to unite the King with his Queen. The current state of diversity, both in nature (i.e. the macrocosm) and in our psyche (i.e. the microcosm) is not an ideal state. The goal of psychoanalysis is to become conscious of your diversified nature, the complexes (which are rather “demonic” in nature), and be able to transcend their direct and indirect domination over the soul. -

THE LANGUAGE OF THE BIRDS THE LANGUAGE OF THE BIRDS OUR ANGELIC CONNECTION 1 THE LANGUAGE OF THE BIRDS The Language of the Birds is one of several names given to the secret hermetic language of esotericism. Since at least the Dark Ages (and I don’t mean the 1980’s) an idea has existed that there once was a language, or a particular word, which perfectly expressed the nature of things. This language was called the Language of the Birds. It is well known by scholars in the field of linguistics that Adam in the Garden of Eden spoke a mysterious primordial language, and that this language (symbolized by the apple) provided immense power and abundance to humanity. Similar to the way the English word and becomes et in French and und in German, yet may be expressed world wide by the sign & -- all language was once universally understood. This Language was lost when Adam and Eve were expelled from Eden -- or so we have been taught to believe. This would imply that the human being is constantly “cognitively active”, since he or she is steadily subjected to a continuous flow of stimuli from the surrounding environment, which are elaborated, processed and stored in forms of concepts and thoughts. Languages are preferred places to express such concepts and thoughts, and language structures and their organization in every communicative activity can be considered as a reflection of how the human mind works, perceives the world and expresses such perceptions. While some concepts are expressed without any particular linguistic resource, others are conveyed through more complex and elaborated structures, which formations are the outcome of specific cognitive processes, like association, analogies and connections between different domains.
