5 OCTOBER 18, 2020 | TWENTY-NINTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME PARISH NEWS

OUR MONTHLY AFTERNOON OF EUCHARISTIC ADORATION AND BENEDICTION will take place next Sunday, October 25 as we celebrate the 114th anniversary of the Cathedral. The Blessed Sacrament will be exposed for adoration and prayer from 1:00 until 5:00 pm. Solemn Vespers and Benediction with the Cathedral schola are celebrated at 5:00 pm. All are welcome to join us. There are many fruits to those who spend time in prayer before the real presence of Jesus in the Holy Eucharist. This monthly afternoon of Eucharistic Adoration and Benediction takes place the last Sunday of each month. Please consider coming to join us in adoration and prayer before the Real Presence of Jesus in the Holy Eucharist.

A SPECIAL JOINT ALL SOULS’ DAY MASS will be celebrated by Father Stubna at Saint Paul Cathedral on Monday, November 2 at 7:00 pm. This Mass will remember those who have died in the past year (from November 2019 through October 2020) from our Saint Paul Cathedral parish and who have been buried from our four worship sites: Saint Paul Cathedral, Saint Regis, Saint Rosalia, and Saint Stephen. The next of kin for those who have died will receive an invitation to the Mass, but all are welcome to attend. All Souls’ Day and November is a special day for the Church to remember all the faithful departed and this is a Mass that remembers all those who have died from our parish family in this past year. Please come and join us. We regret that due to the COVID-19 restrictions in place we are not able to hold the reception following the Mass this year. Many thanks to Paul Cathedral parish Ladies of Charity for their help in coordinat- ing this Mass. Let us come together and celebrate the lives of those we have lost this year and pray for their eternal rest and for their families and loved ones. May they rest in peace.

BOOK OF REMEMBRANCE. As we anticipate our celebration of November and our remembrance of those who have died, we have two different traditions that will take place. One Book of Remembrance will be in the vestibule of Saint Rosalia site from October 1-31. Please feel free to place the names of your deceased loved ones, friends, and family members in the book to be displayed in the sanctuary for the month of November. We will remember them and all of the faithful departed in our prayers and during Mass throughout the month of November, the month for all souls, marked before us with the sign of faith. Another Book of Remembrance will be placed near the Blessed Mother altar at Saint Paul Cathedral throughout the month of November. Please feel free to place the names of your deceased loved ones, family members and friends in that book. They will be remembered at every Mass celebrated during the month of November. “We must say many prayers for the souls of the faithful departed, for one must be so pure to enter heaven.” ~ Saint John Vianney.

SAINT OF THE WEEK. October 22 will mark the feast day of Saint Pope John Paul II. What a joyous day it is for the Church to recall and to celebrate the life and witness of this great man of God who touched the lives of so many people over the course of his long papacy (1978-2005). He was an intellectual who saw published many great encyclicals and apostolic letters, the Catechism of the Catholic Church, and the revised Code of Canon Law. But his passion for the faith, his pastoral outreach and his apostolic zeal was evidenced in his many pastoral visits to countries throughout the world, for his great love for the youth and young adults of the Church, and for his care for marriage and families. He confronted the evils of the day, helping to bring about an end to Russian communism in Eastern Europe, and fought bravely for our relations with the Jews, the Orthodox, and other Christian communities. He was almost assassinated and suffered tremendous physical trials in his lifetime, but always remained courageous, loving, and faithful – giving a true witness to the redemptive meaning of the Cross. He had a strong devotion to our Blessed Mother whom he believed saved him from death and remained close to him throughout his papacy.

THE FLU SEASON IS UPON US and everyone is encouraged to engage in basic hygienic practices when you come to Church. GET YOUR FLU SHOT. Viral diseases are most often passed along through coughs, sneezes, or physical contact. Cough or sneeze into your arm and not your hands. Please dispose of your used tissues in the garbage can and not on the floor or pews in Church. We encourage anyone who is not feeling well or has been exposed to the flu to PLEASE STAY HOME until you are well. It is never a sin to miss Mass in those conditions and you are putting others in the Church at risk of catching the flu as well. At the present moment the obligation to attend Mass on Sunday has been lifted by the bishops of Pennsylvania. Please use common sense and be respectful of others as we try to prevent the spread of the flu virus. Thank you.

PRO-LIFE CORNER

ARCHBISHOP JOSEPH F. NAUMANN OF KANSAS CITY in Kansas and chairman of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ (USCCB) Committee on Pro-Life Activities has issued a statement encouraging Catholics to allow the Gospel of Christ to touch and transform our own hearts and the decisions we make. “For Catholics in the United States, October is a time to focus on God’s precious gift of human life and our responsibility to care for, protect, and defend the lives of our brothers and sisters. This year’s theme, Live the Gospel of Life, was inspired by the commemoration of the 25th anniversary of Pope John Paul II’s encyclical, The Gospel of Life. Pope John Paul’s masterfully articulated defense of the right to life for children in their mothers’ wombs, the elderly, persons with disabilities, and the marginalized is more relevant today than ever before. Last November, the U.S. bishops reaffirmed that ‘the threat of abortion remains our preeminent priority because it directly attacks life itself, because it takes place within the sanctuary of the family, and because of the number of lives destroyed.’ While we noted not to ‘dismiss or ignore other serious threats to human life and dignity such as racism, the environmental crisis, poverty, and the death penalty,’ we renewed our commitment to protect the most fundamental of all human rights – the right to life. This past January, I shared with Pope Francis that the bishops of the United States had been criticized by some for identifying the protection of the unborn as a preeminent priority. The Holy Father expressed his support for our efforts observing that if we fail to protect life, no other rights matter. Pope Francis also said that abortion is not primarily a Catholic or even a religious issue, it is first and foremost a human rights issue. The Gospel of Life provides a blueprint for building a culture of life and civilization of love. The important work of transforming our culture begins by allowing the Gospel of Christ to touch and transform our own hearts and the decisions we make. May we strive to imitate Christ and follow in his footsteps, caring for the most vulnerable among us. Through the intercession of Our Lady of Guadalupe, may Our Lord grant us the grace to live courageously and faithfully his Gospel of life.”

AS WE CELEBRATE THE 25TH ANNIVERSARY OF POPE SAINT JOHN PAUL II'S ENCYCLICAL EVANGELIUM VITAE, “THE GOSPEL OF LIFE,” we want to share a quote from that document each week in our Pro-Life Corner. Thanks to Birthright of Pittsburgh for helping to coordinate this effort. From the “Gospel of Life” #52: “God’s commandment is never detached from his love: it is always a gift meant for man's growth and joy… In giving life to man, God demands that he love, respect, and promote life. The gift thus becomes a commandment, and the commandment is itself a gift.” ~ Pope Saint John Paul II

OCTOBER IS RESPECT LIFE MONTH. The Cathedral parish will be participating in the 40 Days for Life vigil on Friday, October 30, from 3:00 – 5:00 pm in front of Planned Parenthood downtown. If you are interested, please contact Mark Sullivan for details: [email protected]. For anyone who only sees abortion as a political issue, this prayerful experience is life changing.

WINE, CHEESE AND THE GOSPEL – FALL 2020. Father Stubna will host the Fall 2020 edition of Wine, Cheese and the Gospel online as we did in the Spring. This program can be accessed through the Cathedral Facebook page as well as Comcast channel 95. This online edition will take place from 7:00 – 8:00 pm on the following dates:

Monday, October 26: Catholic Teaching on Faithful Citizenship and Voting

Monday, November 30: Why Do We Have Saints and Some Saints for Our Times

Please consider joining us for this series that helps all of us to learn more about our Catholic beliefs and how we can live them out with fidelity and courage.

CONFESSIONS will continue to be scheduled on Fridays and Saturdays from 12:00 pm until 1:00 pm. We are using the Saint Rosalia site with entrance right off Greenfield Avenue. One or two priests from our parish grouping will be available to hear confessions outdoors in front of the Saint Rosalia School/Convent building. People can drive through or walk through and stand in line with proper social distancing. There will be a barrier to separate the priest from the penitent.

7 OCTOBER 18, 2020 | TWENTY-NINTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME PARISH NEWS

PASSING FROM DEATH TO NEW LIFE. We extend our deepest sympathies to the family of BROTHER KEVIN DALMASSE, FSC, and all the members of the Christian Brothers community. Brother Kevin was buried from Saint Paul Cathedral this past Saturday. May he rest in peace.

ST. MICHAEL PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION. Often times people ask why we pray the Prayer to St. Michael the Archangel after communion. Father Stubna instituted the prayer at Saint Paul Cathedral over six years ago and we began reciting this prayer in all of the parishes in our grouping in October 2018. Pope Leo XIII wrote the Saint Michael prayer in 1884, after supposedly seeing a frightening vision: evil spirits, trying to fulfill Satan’s boast to destroy our Lord’s Church within a century, were engaging in fierce attacks against it. Although the Pontiff also saw St. Michael casting Satan (also known as the devil) and his demons back into Hell in his vision, he was so horrified by what he had seen he felt compelled to help defend our faith in this struggle. In the Saint Michael prayer, he throws down the gauntlet to “the father of lies” as Jesus calls the devil in John’s Gospel (8:44), by enlisting the help of a very special Archangel. As a special patron and protector of the Church, St. Michael has been assigned to fight against Satan; to protect faithful souls from him, especially at their death; to champion God’s people; and, further along this line, to escort them to their judgment. Pope Leo XIII saw to it that the Saint Michael prayer was recited after every low Mass throughout the world. (The low Mass, discontinued in 1970 after Vatican II, was said by a priest alone, with no music.) This prayer is not said at Mass today, but in 1994 Pope John Paul II urged the faithful keep to reciting it. Although we tend to downplay the notion of the devil as being too quaint or outmoded today, he does indeed exist and not just as a symbol of evil, or as character in a fairytale to frighten us. Prayer and the sacraments are an essential part of what St. Paul called the “armor of God” in his letter to the Ephesians. The Saint Michael prayer can help us indeed “stand against the deceits of the devil” (Eph 6:11) by “taking the shield of faith” (Eph 6:16). Remember, God permits us to be tempted by the devil but gives us the grace to resist him through prayer in our daily lives. Let us not be afraid to ask for St. Michael’s help in this prayer and others like it. We need to remember that each time we pray we work to defeat our real enemies, not each other, but rather the devil and his evil spirits. As St. Paul put it, we fight “not against flesh and blood but against principalities and power, against the rulers of the world of this darkness, against the spirits of wickedness” (Eph 6:12). With God’s help in prayer they can all be overcome. Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do Thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host, by the Divine Power of God, cast into hell Satan and all the evil spirits who roam throughout the world seeking the ruin of souls. AMEN.

ANYONE INTERESTED IN BECOMING CATHOLIC? The process involved is called the RCIA – the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults. This is the required manner in which anyone who is unbaptized or who has been baptized in another Christian faith must go through to become a member of the Catholic Church. The RCIA began in September but if anyone is interested please contact the Cathedral rectory so that one of the priests of our grouping can speak with you and add you to the list of those who will participate this fall. We are more than happy to talk to anyone who thinks that they may have an interest in becoming a Catholic. This year our parish will have one consolidated program for anyone coming from the four worship sites in our grouping. It takes place every week on Tuesday evening from 7:00 – 9:00 pm from September through the Easter Vigil.

RCIA CLASSES have begun and are held every Tuesday evening from 7:00 – 9:00 pm in the Cathedral social hall. Wearing of masks and social distancing will be required by all who participate. Please contact the rectory if you wish to sign up.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION CLASSES for our parish children in grades 1-8 will be online for the 2020-21 school year. We will be using the My Catholic Faith Delivered series by Ignatius Press. Students access the same course material online that is traditionally delivered in books. Materials are “brought to life” with the addition of videos, games, clickable references, music, and assessments that provide immediate feedback. The series is available in English or Spanish. For more information on registering your child please contact Terri Taormina at [email protected].

BOOK REVIEWS. The 12th book review in our series of reviews being offered by members of our parish family is written by LEAH ZANDE. She has chosen the book Gospel Figures in Art by Stefano Zuffi, translated by Thomas Michael Hartmann. This book, from the Guide to Imagery series, is chock full of paintings, sculptures, and altar screens. The artists are often well-known names, and it is what most people would consider traditional art, not modern or contemporary. Divided into chapters which cover both key figures in the Gospels, as well as episodes in Jesus’s life, one can watch the Gospel stories unfold. Sources for each episode or person are briefly laid out, with scripture often quoted, so you’re getting the visual within context of its source. The book points out the symbolism of the art and the attributes associated with various Gospel figures, so you can more deeply understand the art. The tone of the book is respectful of Christianity and treats it as true, without cynicism or snobbery. As a visual learner, I find it very useful for meditation and reflection during the liturgical seasons, especially Lent. It also helps me picture the scenes when hearing the Gospels read at Mass. I find I go back again and again to this book because I enjoy seeing the art connected with particular Gospel episodes (i.e. feeding of the 5000, wedding at Cana, etc.). Finally, in the section of appendixes, there is an enlightening section on the Apocryphal Gospels, which are mentioned because many details in Christian art come from these sources.

BOOK REVIEWS. We invite members of our parish to submit a book recommendation with a short review to benefit our parishioners. We are looking for Catholic books on prayer, theology, pastoral life, even Catholic fiction. Father Stubna reserves the right to reject any book that is contrary to orthodox Catholic teaching or belief. We have had 12 book reviews published so far but are in need of other members of the parish community to share a favorite book in order to continue our series.

ACTS OF KINDNESS. Many thanks to JOHN PELUSO for his kindness in providing lunch for the priests and staff of the Cathedral this past week. We appreciate his generosity and kindness.

OFFERTORY CONTRIBUTION REMINDER. With many of our Masses no longer being celebrated and with public celebrations of Mass only gradually reopening and certainly with a limit of those allowed to attend, offertory income has greatly declined. This is clearly compromising our ability to operate our parish with solvency. We need to continue to receive your donations on a regular basis if we are to meet our financial obligations, maintain essential parish operations, and remain a viable parish beyond the pandemic. Please consider sending your envelopes by mail or signing up for online giving. Go to our website www.ghocatholics.org and click on the “Donate to St. Paul Cathedral” page under the “Resources” tab. You can simply enter your envelope number and make a gift or set up regular contributions in your account. Check out the website! May God bless you for your generosity. Many thanks to a number of people as well who have made donations to help make up for the decrease in our offertory income over these past months. We appreciate your kindness and support!

9 OCTOBER 18, 2020 | TWENTY-NINTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME PARISH NEWS

HELP NEEDED for wedding rehearsals and weddings. We are seeking one or two people who might be interested in serving as part time wedding coordinators for the Cathedral. This would involve perhaps two weekends a month. This person would be responsible for coordinating both the wedding rehearsals on Friday (typically from 4:00 pm through 7:00 pm) and the weddings on Saturday afternoon (typically from 1:00 pm until 6:00 pm). Training would be provided. We currently have several people who are helping with this ministry, but we need to find one or two more. Compensation is provided. Please contact Father Stubna if you are interested ([email protected]) or call the Cathedral rectory. PARISH FACILITIES AND GATHERINGS. Due to the continued concern over the coronavirus pandemic and our desire to help mitigate the spread of that virus, we are not using our facilities for any meetings or gatherings until further notice. When we are allowed to begin gathering once again, we will make some decisions about what we might be able to do in trying to bring people together. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO HELP AND TO CLEAN THE CATHEDRAL AND SAINT ROSALIA AFTER EACH PUBLIC MASS. As we try to gradually reopen for Mass, we are in need of volunteers to clean and to sanitize the pews after each of the Masses. Currently we are celebrating the 6:30 am, 10:00 am, 12:00 noon, and 6:00 pm Masses at the Cathedral – with a maximum of 250 people in attendance sitting at designated areas – and the 4:00 pm and 1:00 pm Masses at Saint Rosalia with a maximum of 120 persons. In order to maintain this schedule, we need to have enough volunteers each week to help with the cleaning of the pews after every Mass. If you are attending one of those Masses, perhaps you might consider staying to help clean the pews, so we are ready to go for the next Mass. If you can help, please contact the rectory. We also need volunteers to help clean the Cathedral on Saturdays after the 12:05 pm and after the 2:00 pm and 4:00 pm weddings. THE SUNDAY 10:00 AM MASS AND THE WEEKDAY 8:15 AM MASS can be viewed live each day on the Christian Associates TV – Channel 95 on Comcast. Channel 95 broadcasts re-runs of the daily Mass at 2:00 am, 5:10 pm and 8:10 pm. The Mass is always streamed live and is available throughout the day on the computer at ChristianAssociatesTV.org. This link can be accessed as well on the Saint Paul Cathedral website. The Stations of the Cross with our pastor Father Stubna can be viewed every Friday at 3:30 pm on the Christian Associates Channel. Morning Prayer with Bishop Zubik can be seen each day at 8:00 am and the Rosary follows the 8:15 am Mass until 9:00 am but is broadcast in its entirety at 10:00 pm each evening. We are grateful to the television ministry volunteers at the Cathedral who help to make this ministry to the elderly and homebound possible.

VOLUNTEERS FOR THE TELEVISION MINISTRY ARE NEEDED. All are welcome. Training is provided. During the week, the time would be from 8:00 am until 9:00 am and on Sunday from 9:45 am until 11:15 am. Please consider helping us with this important ministry in the Church.

SAINT PAUL CATHEDRAL PARISH RAFFLE. We are hoping that everyone in our new parish community will consider supporting this parish-wide fundraiser to help with our parish expenses. This raffle is based on the daily three-digit pick three evening PA lottery. Tickets are numbered from 000-999. Tickets are $5 each and the number is eligible for the entire month. Most days the winner will receive $50 however, there are specific days each month that the winning ticket is worth from $100-$250. The prize for winning on the last day of each month is $500. Ticket stubs must be returned by the final day of the previous month with the ticket stub filled out completely and legibly. Tickets are available in the rectory office or can be mailed. Payment of cash or check is accepted. If you have a favorite number(s), you can reserve it/them each month if available. All proceeds benefit our parish. For more information or to obtain tickets please contact the parish office. We are only able to sponsor a raffle in the name of Saint Paul Cathedral Parish which is our legal entity and for which we have a small games of chance license that allows us to operate this raffle. ONLINE STUDY GROUP FOR MEN AND WOMEN. Want to dig deeper into the Sunday Mass Scripture readings? Join other parish members for an online study group every Sunday from 8:00 to 9:00 pm. High school age and older are welcome. Contact Regis Flaherty for additional information or to register (412-287-4007; regisjfl[email protected]).

10 SAINT PAUL CATHEDRAL PARISH | GREENFIELD, HAZELWOOD, OAKLAND

YOUNG ADULT MINISTRY CORNER

JOIN US FOR LECTIO DIVINA, the ancient practice of reading and praying over scripture. On Friday, October 23, we invite you to gather in Synod Hall at St. Paul Cathedral at 7:00 pm to pray together, reflect on the Gospel reading for the upcoming Sunday, and faith share. We ask that you bring a mask. We encourage you to bring your own Bible or use your phone to follow along the Gospel.

MASS INTENTIONS FOR 2021 will be taken beginning, Monday, November 16. There will be an insert in the November 8 bulletin that is the form to be used for requesting Mass intentions. We do not take Mass intention requests over the phone or any walk-in requests until all parishioner forms have been processed. The forms can be mailed in or dropped off at the rectory and are processed in the order received. Please note the stipulations of the parish Mass policy: Only four (4) requests per registered household will be able to be scheduled, with only two (2) Sunday masses per household. There are no exceptions to this policy. We need to be fair and just to all our parishioners. If there are special wedding anniversary requests for 2021, please get these to Father Stubna as soon as possible. The Mass intention forms will be accepted beginning Monday, November 16 in the office and will be recorded in the order they are received. Please note that some special parish and diocesan Mass times have already been reserved. No individual Mass requests will be taken until Monday, December 28. Up until that time you will need to submit all requests with the Mass intention form. Any Mass intentions over the limit will be sent out to other priests for satisfaction.

LETTER TO THE PHILIPPIANS. Please join us Monday evenings to study Paul's letter to the Philippians. Starting Monday, October 26 from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm, we will use the commentary “Six weeks with the Bible” to look at this book of the Bible. Contact Deacon Tom to register ([email protected] or 412-414-3125). We need your name, address, phone number, and email address.

ATTENTION MEN. Are you looking to deepen your relationship with God? Be a better husband? Become a more loving father? Build friendships with other like-minded men? And seek to be the best man you can be? Then come join “That Man is You!” Saturday mornings 7:30 to 9:00 via ZOOM. You can register online at https://admin.paradisusdei.org/ or by contacting Regis Flaherty at 412-287-4007 or regisjfl[email protected].

WANT TO SEE DEACON TOM WITH BLUE HAIR? Deacon Tom volunteers with Catholic Relief Services (CRS) as a Global Fellow. He visits parishes and preaches about all the good work people do when they donate to CRS to help our brothers and sisters in foreign countries. Deacon Tom and 9 other Global Fellows are raising money for CRS throughout October. If they reach their goal by 10/31/2020 Deacon Tom will dye his hair (the bit that he still has) NEON BLUE. Interested in helping? Visit: http://bit.ly/crsbettom

THE FOLLOWING MASS INTENTIONS originally scheduled for this week (October 19 through October 25) at the worship sites in our parish will be satisfied in private masses celebrated by our parish priests:

EILEEN O. CAREY ALBERT AND DELFINA FRATANGELO HELEN TARASOVIC

HEARING LOOP. We have been exploring the installation of a hearing loop at Saint Paul Cathedral. This would significantly help those with hearing impairments by allowing sound to be directly communicated to a person’s hearing aids through the T-coil. The difference in being able to hear is dramatic as it takes away all external noises and echoes. The equipment and installation will cost approximately $18,000. We are hoping to be able to raise funds for this project and invite anyone who can help to contact Father Stubna. This would be another means for us to be able to provide much needed ministry to the elderly and those with hearing impairments and help us in our parish mission to be more inclusive and welcoming to all people, including persons with disabilities.
