And ‘forever’ means exactly that. We need to become good ancestors as well as good neighbours. Newcastle upon Tyne has been named the UK’s most sustainable large city for the second year running, which is a huge achievement considering our industrial roots – don’t forget it was our Tyneside forefathers who gave the world ‘carboniferous capitalism’. Now the challenge is to change one of the world’s oldest industrial cities into one of its most sustainable, 30 44 and to make it a global exemplar of best practice. This issue of Arches looks at the work of the University and our alumni in the pursuit of sustainability. Twenty-five years ago, however, I could not have have done so because the nation was in the painful throes of the "Energy Crisis". Nearly every week, the local press carried front page news stories about the crisis and there were frequent editorials about causes and solutions. My clearest memory of the crisis involved driving to Frederick, waiting an hour for 10 gallons of gas and feeling proud of my accomplishment. This newspaper carried two stories about the crisis in the February 14, 1974 issue of the paper under the headline of "Shortages Bring Hard Times To Station Owners". The first story, "Rival's Closing Brings Frowns" described the impending closing of the Gulf station in Manchester: "When Ken Gerst's Gulf station closes at the end of the month the competition at Manchester's two remaining service station's won't be smiling. "It's going to be terrible for the rest of us." said Mobil station operator Leon Miller. "We simply don't have enough gas to take care of his customers." Speaking about the problems he and BP station owner Donald Rhoten will encounter next month. Miller said, "We've got to come up with 5,000 gallons apiece and we haven't got it." "It's going to ruin me," Rhoten said of Gerst's closing. "What am I going to do? With half of my allotment I can't take care of his (customers) and mine both.

    Taming Cerberus: The Beast at AEDPA’s Gates Patrick J. Fuster† INTRODUCTION The Antiterrorism and Effective Death Penalty Act of 19961 (AEDPA) established the current regime under which federal courts address petitions for a writ of habeas corpus by state prisoners. Whenever my memory has failed me I have drawn on the recollections of others or sought information from extant records. Seven decades have passed since the General Election of 1945 and there are few people now living with personal recollections of candidates who fought so long ago. I have drawn heavily upon recollections of conversations with older Liberal personalities in the West Midland Region who I knew in my early days with the party. I was conscious when I began work, twenty years ago, that much of this information would be lost forever were it not committed promptly to print. The Liberal challenge was weak in the West Midland Region over the period 1945 to 1959 in common with most regions of Britain. The number of constituencies fought fluctuated wildly; 1945, 21; 1950, 31; 1951, 3; 1955 4. The number of parliamentary constituencies in the region averaged just short of 60, a very large proportion urban in character.

Marion Wilson, Jr., a Georgia prisoner sentenced to death for the murder of Donovan Parks in 1996, filed a petition for a writ of habeas corpus in the Superior Court of Butts County, Georgia. That court denied his petition in a written opinion. Wilson sought to appeal that decision, and the Supreme Court of Georgia summarily denied his application for a certificate of probable cause to appeal. The district court then denied Wilson’s federal petition for a writ of habeas corpus, and after reviewing the one-sentence decision of the Georgia Supreme Court, we affirmed. Wilson v. Warden, Ga.
