ZooKeys 565: 1–28. doi: 10.3897/zookeys.565.6877 Abstract In the last decades, several expeditions were organized in Europe by the researchers of the Hungarian Natural History Museum to collect snails, aquatic insects and soil animals (mites, springtails, nematodes, and earthworms). In this study, scale insect (Hemiptera: Coccomorpha) specimens extracted from Hun- garian Natural History Museum soil samples (2970 samples in total), all of which were collected using soil and litter sampling devices, and extracted by Berlese funnel, were examined. From these samples, 43 scale insect species (Acanthococcidae 4, Coccidae 2, Micrococcidae 1, Ortheziidae 7, Pseudococcidae 21, Putoidae 1 and Rhizoecidae 7) were found in 16 European countries. In addition, a new species belong- ing to the family Pseudococcidae, Brevennia larvalis Kaydan, sp.

  • IMPEL Water Crimes Workshop 24Th October 2018
IMPEL Water Crimes Workshop 24th October 2018 in the framework of the Conference “Protecting habitats and endangered species in Europe through tackling Environmental crime” Heraklion – Crete (Gr) 22th - 24th October, 2018 Introduction The environment provides the very foundation of sustainable development, health, food security and economies. Ecosystems provide clean water supply, clean air and secure food and ultimately both physical and mental wellbeing. Natural resources also provide livelihoods, jobs and revenues to governments that can be used for education, health care, development and sustainable business models (UNEP/INTERPOL, 2016). Particularly, water, the "blue gold" (BARLOW, 2001) – called for the first time in this way by the National Post in 1999 - is a basic essential of life and a strategic resource for the future of everyone, especially the poorest. Not only is it a vital need for human survival, groundwater has many roles in regulating the structure and functioning of healthy freshwater ecosystems (YOUNGER, 2007) and to flora and fauna. It constitutes the lifeblood of many industries, from tourism to mining, from agriculture to aquaculture. Although more than 70 % of the Earth is covered in water, 97 % is held in the oceans. Of the remaining "not salty" water (3 %), only the 2 % is freshwater locked in snow and ice (e.g. glaciers), leaving less than 1 % accessible for human requirements (US Geological Survey, 2015). Moreover, freshwater is not evenly distributed: only 9 countries share 60 % of the total amount of freshwater, and Amazonia has 15 % of the total resources but only 0.3 % of the world’s population (TOMINI, 2008). While 873 million people lack access to safe drinking water (UN, 2012), some predict that by the year 2025, 1.8 billion people will live in places and under conditions in which water is scarce" (see e.g.

METEORA. BY THE REV. A. H. CRUICKSHANK. PLATES II. AND III. A VISIT to the monasteries of Meteora is easier now than in 1834, when Curzon, escorted by a party of " klephts," reached them from the North. One feels, in reading the account of his rapid passage from Corfu to the valley of the upper Peneus and back again, that it was touch and go in those days. Now the traveller can approach Meteora by the railway, the chief outward and visible sign of improvement in the region assigned to Hellas by the Treaty of Berlin. To any one who has the time to spare I can strongly recommend a week in Thessaly, as it contains several objects of first-rate interest, and is in many respects unlike the rest of Greece. The population is largely Wallachian, and their bronzed shaggy faces suggest the uncomfortable thought, that the veneer of civilisation is even thinner than elsewhere in these parts.

The aim of this work is to evaluate the ecological status of Juniperus foetidissima Willd. forest stands in the protected Natura 2000 site of Mt. Oiti in Greece. The study of the ecological status is important for designing and implementing active management and conservation actions for the species’ protection. Tree size characteristics (height, breast height diameter), age, reproductive dynamics, seed production and viability, tree density, sex, and habitat expansion were examined. The data analysis revealed a generally good ecological status of the habitat with high plant diversity. However, at the different juniper stands, subpopulations present high variability and face different problems, such as poor tree density, reduced numbers of juvenile trees or poor seed production, inadequate male:female ratios, a small number of female trees, reduced numbers of seeds with viable embryos, competition with other woody species, grazing, and Citation: Proutsos, N.; Solomou, A.; illegal logging. From the results, the need for site-specific active management and interventions is Karetsos, G.; Tsagari, K.; Mantakas, demonstrated in order to preserve or achieve the good status of the habitat at all stands in the region.
