Data was collected on newspaper readers and Usefulness of newspaper as information supporting agency. A sample size of 1800 rural women was taken for the study, the research identifies the general characteristics of study population, newspaper reading habits of women, preferred places for reading newspapers, categories of newspapers read by rural women, list of daily newspapers read by women, purpose of reading newspapers, newspapers as an information supporting agency and usefulness of newspapers as information supporting agency. Concludes that the onus is on libraries to prove their significance. Keywords: Newspaper, Periodical, Rural Women, Karnataka 1. Introduction: Newspapers, magazines and books are a good means of mass-communication. This is a print medium which travels far and wide. The newspapers have a very wide circulation and every literate person tries to go through them. They bring us the latest news, rates of the commodities, advertisements, employment news, matrimonial and other information [1]. Newspapers tend to reach more educated, elitist audiences in many developing countries. This may not seem the quickest way, compared with radio or TV, to reach a mass audience.

Emil:[email protected] Abstract - The present study has been done by using webometric methods. This paper intends to evaluate the Kannada language newspaper web sites using the most well known tool for evaluating websites “Alexa Internet” a company of Amazon.com. The 10 leading Kannada language newspaper websites from the state of Karnataka were taken for evaluation. Each newspaper web site was searched in Alexa databank and relevant data including traffic rank, pages viewed, speed, links, and bounce percentage, time on site, search percentage, and percentage of Indian/foreign users were collected and these data were tabulated and analyzed. The result of this study shows that Vijayakarnataka has 2,255 the highest traffic rank in India Udayavani has 27,903 the highest traffic rank in global. Vijayakarnataka has 7.32 having highest number of average pages viewed per day and 12:40 estimated daily time spent on site by the visitors. The advent of New media has contributed both positively and negatively to the print media industry. During the past decade, the growth of digital technology has led to the burgeoning of on-line and mobile communication technologies. Traditional definitions of news are challenged by these new and emerging technologies, especially those that demand faster responses or reconstitute traditional work values, practices and processes. This paper examines key discussions occurring in relation to three issues currently affecting the news media both globally and locally they are: apparent disconnection between the media and their public; decline in circulation and readership; and the increasing role and influence of new technologies on print media. These issues were addressed through an examination of the current status of Karnataka regional newspapers in relation to a number of areas including: circulation; the use of information technologies, in particular websites; and how technologies might be used to foster public discussion in the process connecting geographically isolated publics and creating new readerships.] KEYWORDS: Print media, Digital technology, new media, Circulation, readership, disconnection.
