In January of this year, the Skip the Plastic project of the Surfrider Foundation - Texas Coastal Bend Chapter switched from recognizing community members and businesses that have made the shift to reusable shopping bags to those who go out of their way to clean up their local park, neighborhood, or their favorite stretch of beach. Our September Cleanup Hero is Joel Trevino, Owner of Dagon Produce, a local company providing fresh local & seasonal produce for Corpus Christi and surrounding areas. Joel shared with us that, “I find it outstanding how a plastic straw or a Styrofoam cup can make its way into a remote area. The nature of my Business gives me the opportunity to visit farms through the coastal bend area in search of fresh produce, and during these travels, I have noticed the growing amount of plastics and other non-compostable materials accumulating in and around these farms. During these visits I like to take a little time to pick up some of it as I walk through the farm.” We commend Joel for his efforts to clean-up as he walks the farms. He has inspired us to keep cleaning up and we hope he inspires you too!
