Ottawa has a record of 67-49-8 in home openers. OU won last year’s home opener against the University of Saint Mary, 29-27. Prior to Celebrating 150 Years of College Football: One of the major changes in 1906 to the rules was the legalizing of the forward that victory, the Braves had lost three straight home openers. pass. It was hoped, and this hope was proven correct, that by opening up the game fewer players would be injured in the mass rushing plays that were so popular and effective at the turn of the century. The rules committee also changed the downs system, requiring a team to make ten yards, not five, in three tries for a first down. In 1912 the rule was changed to four tries, or downs, to make a first down. Most sources credit St. Louis University’s Bradbury Robinson from Bellevue, Ohio with throwing the first legal forward pass. On September 5, 1906, in a game against Carroll College, Robinson’s first attempt at a forward pass fell incomplete and resulted in a turnover under the 1906 rules.
