Dark Was the Night: the Legacy of Blind Willie Johnson Dark Was the Night: The Legacy of Blind Willie Johnson We look back at the blind Texas bluesman’s profound influence. February 26, 2016 by Ryan Pinkard If you really want to hear the blues, boiled down to its absolute essence, listen to Blind Willie Johnson’s “Dark Was the Night, Cold Was the Ground.” Sluggish, raw and covered in static, the 1927 recording opens with Blind Willie bending and plucking the strings on his self-taught bottleneck slide guitar. Then, based on the one known photograph of Johnson alone, you can picture the blind bluesman leaning back in his chair, not singing but rather moaning, groaning and humming in response to his instrument with painful intensity. Even without words, the three-minute track articulates a lifetime of suffering and sadness. “Dark Was the Night” is a song that can move mountains, and has inspired nearly every blues and rock artist since. Jack White called it “the greatest example of slide guitar ever recorded.” Ry Cooder described it as “the most soulful, transcendent piece in all American music.” It’s a morsel of music heritage so precious and momentous and true, it was even picked by Carl Sagan as one of 27 music samples included on the Voyager Golden Record, which NASA launched into space in 1977 to represent humanity on Earth. If some intelligent life form ever comes across that album, they too are going to understand the same truth embodied by the blues: that along with all the beauty and brightness of the human experience, there also exists a darkness as inescapable as the night. Only so much is known about Blind Willie Johnson, but what is certain is that he lived the blues in every sense. Born near Temple, Texas in 1897, young Willie Johnson decided to become a preacher at age 5, around the same time his mother died and he made his first guitar out of a cigar box. It is alleged that he was blinded at age 7, when his stepmother spitefully threw lye in his eyes after his father had beaten her for going out with another man, although this is unconfirmed. As a lifelong musician and man of the cloth, Johnson was poor his entire life. Growing up his father would leave him on street corners to sing for money. He is known to have preached and played music in numerous towns and cities across the state of Texas, ultimately settling in Beaumont, where he operated a House of Prayer as Rev. W. J. Johnson. In summer 1945 a fire burned his house to the ground. With nowhere to go, Johnson lived and slept in the ruins until he contracted malarial fever and died on September 18. His second wife Angeline said that the hospital refused to treat him because he was blind, while other sources say it was because he was black. Blind Willie Johnson left behind a mere 29 songs to his name, recorded for Columbia over five sessions between 1927 and 1930, but he made them count. Powerfully rooted in his faith, Johnson’s blues music is deeply intertwined in the Gospel. The sparse, unpolished nature of his self-taught guitar style acts as bare rhythmic base for his spirited, gravelly voice to deliver allegorical and existential lyrics like: Well won’t somebody tell me Answer if you can I want somebody to tell me Just what is the soul of a man? Along with “Dark Was the Night, Cold Was the Ground,” just about all of his songs have been recorded or reinterpreted in the almost-90 years since, putting Blind Willie’s profound influence on par with that of Robert Johnson and Charlie Patton. Songs like “Jesus Make Up My Dying Bed,” “It’s Nobody’s Fault but Mine,” “John the Revelator,” “You’ll Need Somebody on Your Bond,” “Motherless Children” and “Soul of a Man” have become keystone texts for the early evolution of blues, and the later development of rock and roll and all forms of American roots music. The list of artists who have taken on Johnson’s repertoire is uncountably long, but includes Nina Simone, Bob Dylan, Led Zeppelin, Nick Cave, Eric Clapton, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Ashely Cleveland, Incredible String Band, Captain Beefheart, Willie Nelson, John Fahey, the White Stripes, Andrew Bird and Gillian Welch – to name a few. And the list keeps growing, most recently with the album, God Don’t Ever Change: The Songs of Blind Willie Johnson. The brand new tribute includes two songs each by Tom Waits and Lucinda Williams, as well as contributions from the likes of Sinead O’Connor, the Blind Boys of Alabama & Jason Isbell, Derek Trucks & Susan Tedeschi, Rickie Lee Jones, Maria McKee, Luther Dickenson and the Cowboy Junkies. .

SPECIAL DANCES for Weddings: Please note that we will need your special dance requests, (I.E. First Dance, Father/Daughter Dance, Mother/Son Dance etc) FOUR WEEKS in advance prior to your event so that we can confirm that the band will be able to perform the song(s) and that we are able to locate sheet music. In some cases where sheet music is not available or an arrangement for the full band is need- ed, this gives us the time needed to properly prepare the music and learn the material. Clients are not obligated to send in a list of general song requests. Many of our clients ask that the band just react to whatever their guests are responding to on the dance floor. Our clients that do provide us with song requests do so in varying degrees. Most clients give us a handful of songs they want played and avoided. Recently, we’ve noticed in increase in cli- ents customizing what the band plays and doesn’t play with very specific detail. If you de- sire the highest degree of control (allowing the band to only play within the margin of songs requested), we ask for a minimum of 100 requests. We want you to keep in mind that the band is quite good at reading the room and choosing songs that best connect with your guests. The more specific/selective you are, know that there is greater chance of losing certain song medleys, mashups, or newly released material the band has.

Deana Carter DEANA CARTER, the daughter of famed studio guitarist and producer Fred Carter, Jr., grew up surrounded by musical greats, including Willie Nelson, Bob Dylan, Waylon Jennings, and Simon & Garfunkel. She developed her songwriting skills at writer’s nights throughout Nashville, but her real break came when one of her demo tapes fell into the hands of Willie Nelson, who remembered Deana as a child. Impressed with how she’d grown as a songwriter, Nelson asked Deana to perform along with John Mellencamp, Kris Kristofferson, and Neil Young, as the only female solo artist to appear at Farm Aid VII in 1994. Her 1996 debut album Did I Shave My Legs for This? quickly climbed to the top of both the country and pop charts, quickly achieving multi-platinum status. "Strawberry Wine,” the first single from the album, was awarded CMA's 1997 Single of the Year. Seven albums and a decade later, Deana is still writing and producing for both the pop/rock and country markets when not on the road touring. Her superstar success continues to be evident. Her chart topper “You & Tequila,” co-written with Matraca Berg and recorded by Kenny Chesney, was nominated in 2011 as CMA’s “Song of the Year” and received two Grammy nods. Carter also recently co-wrote and produced a new album for recording artist Audra Mae while putting the finishing touches on her own Southern Way of Life that hit the shelves last December. Danny Myrick DANNY MYRICK is an award winning songwriter and musician based here in Nashville.

COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT ANALYSIS IN MUSIC: KATY PERRY A “DARK HORSE” CANDIDATE TO SPARK CHANGE? Edward M. Christian* ABSTRACT The music industry is at a crossroad. Initial copyright infringement judgments against artists like Katy Perry and Robin Thicke threaten millions of dollars in damages, with the songs at issue sharing only very basic musical similarities or sometimes no similarities at all other than the “feel” of the song. The Second Circuit’s “Lay Listener” test and the Ninth Circuit’s “Total Concept and Feel” test have emerged as the dominating analyses used to determine the similarity between songs, but each have their flaws. I present a new test—a test I call the “Holistic Sliding Scale” test—to better provide for commonsense solutions to these cases so that artists will more confidently be able to write songs stemming from their influences without fear of erroneous lawsuits, while simultaneously being able to ensure that their original works will be adequately protected from instances of true copying. * J.D. • Interstellar Music - by Mike Overly
Interstellar Music - by Mike Overly Let's imagine that you could toss a message in a bottle faster than a speeding bullet into the cosmic ocean of outer space. What would you seal inside it for anyone, or anything, to open some day in the distant future, in a galaxy far, far away from our solar system? Well, imagine no more because it's been done! Thirty-five years ago, NASA launched two Voyager spacecraft carrying earthly images and sounds toward the Stars. Voyager 1 was launched on September 5, 1977, from Cape Canaveral, Florida and Voyager 2 was sent on its way August 20 of that same year. Voyager 1 is now 11 billion miles away from earth and is the most distant of all human-made objects. Everyday, it flies another million miles farther. In fact, Voyager 1 and 2 are so far out in space that their radio signals, traveling at the speed of light, take 16 hours to reach Earth. These radio signals are captured daily by the big dish antennas of the Deep Space Network and arrive at a strength of less than one femtowatt, a millionth of a billionth of a watt. Wow! Both Voyagers are headed towards the outer boundary of the solar system, known as the heliopause. This is the region where the Sun's influence wanes and interstellar space waxes. Also, the heliopause is where the million-mile-per-hour solar winds slow down to about 250,000 miles per hour. The Voyagers have reached these solar winds, also known as termination shock, and should cross the heliopause in another 10 to 20 years.

  • Multimillion-Selling Singer Crystal Gayle Has Performed Songs from a Wide Variety of Genres During Her Award-Studded Career, B
MultiMillion-selling singer Crystal Gayle has performed songs from a wide variety of genres during her award-studded career, but she has never devoted an album to classic country music. Until now. You Don’t Know Me is a collection that finds the acclaimed stylist exploring the songs of such country legends as George Jones, Patsy Cline, Buck Owens and Eddy Arnold. The album might come as a surprise to those who associate Crystal with an uptown sound that made her a star on both country and adult-contemporary pop charts. But she has known this repertoire of hardcore country standards all her life. “This wasn’t a stretch at all,” says Crystal. “These are songs I grew up singing. I’ve been wanting to do this for a long time. “The songs on this album aren’t songs I sing in my concerts until recently. But they are very much a part of my history.” Each of the selections was chosen because it played a role in her musical development. Two of them point to the importance that her family had in bringing her to fame. You Don’t Know Me contains the first recorded trio vocal performance by Crystal with her singing sisters Loretta Lynn and Peggy Sue. It is their version of Dolly Parton’s “Put It Off Until Tomorrow.” “You Never Were Mine” comes from the pen of her older brother, Jay Lee Webb (1937-1996). The two were always close. Jay Lee was the oldest brother still living with the family when their father passed away.

“Dark was the Night, Cold was the Ground” –Blind Willie Johnson (1927) Added to the National Registry: 2010 Essay by Shane Ford (guest post)* Blind Willie Johnson In 1977, NASA launched two Voyager spacecraft. Included on each was a gold-plated copper disk containing sounds and images meant to portray the diversity of life on Earth. Specifically, Carl Sagan and his team included 90 minutes of music to communicate to any potential intellige nt life form in the solar system that we are human, feeling creatures. Of those 27 song selections only four were from the United States, and one, “Dark was the Night, Cold was the Ground,” was a three minutes and 20 seconds masterpiece by a blind, African American from Texas recorded almost 50 years earlier. Willie Johnson was born to Dock Johnson and Mary King on January 25, 1897 in Pendleton, Texas, a small farming community just north of Temple. He was not born blind. Within the first ten years of his life, his mother would die and his stepmother would tragically blind him with lye. With this blinding, Johnson’s path began--away from the grueling labor jobs that would have most certainly been his fate, and onto one of the few roads available to him at the time. He became a Homer like figure, a blind bard traveling through various Texas cities--Temple, Marlin, Navasota, Hempstead, Hearne, and Houston’s Fourth Ward--sometimes with a partner but mostly solo, carrying his beat-up guitar with a tin-cup looped around the neck with wire singing songs, warnings, and ballads crafted from the African American spirituals or woven from events from the newspapers.
