From current artists like Luke Bryan and Miranda Lambert, to the outlaws Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings, there's a little something for everyone. 90 WEST has been entertaining Western New York and the surrounding areas for 17 years, and is made up of some of WNY's top musicians. The band was formed in the year 2000 by drummer Steve MacIver and lead singer Holly Marie, who remain the only two original members to this day. Holly, who’s singing experience came from weekly karaoke, was assured by MacIver that she had the voice, stamina, and personality needed to front a band. Not knowing exactly what they had at the time, 90 WEST has proven to be the longest running country band in WNY to date. 17 years and over a thousand gigs later, the band has been named “Buffalo’s Best Country Act” through Buffalo Night- Life (formerly the Buffalo Music Awards), All WNY Music, and Artvoice. They have opened or shared the stage with some of Nashville’s brightest stars, such as The Band Perry, Gretchen Wilson, Trace Adkins, Chris Young, Gary Allen, Montgomery Gentry, Billy Currington, and many others. Though players have changed throughout the years, the current band consists of Matt Garcia on acoustic guitar and vocals, Joey Tosto on lead guitar, Paulie Belardi on bass guitar, Angelo Frijia on keyboards; along with founders Steve (drums and lead vocals) and Holly (lead vocals).     COUNTRY CULTURE AND CROSSOVER: Narrative Representations of Gender and Genre Through Lyric, Music, Image, and Staging in Carrie Underwood’s Blown Away Tour Krisandra Ivings A Thesis Presented In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirement for the Degree Master of Arts in Music with Specialization in Women’s Studies University of Ottawa © Krisandra Ivings, Ottawa, Canada, 2016 Abstract This thesis examines the complex and multi-dimensional narratives presented in the work of mainstream female country artist Carrie Underwood, and how her blending of musical genres (pop, rock, and country) affects the narratives pertaining to gender and sexuality that are told through her musical texts. I interrogate the relationships between and among the domains of music, lyrics, images, and staging in Underwood’s live performances (Blown Away Tour: Live DVD) and related music videos in order to identify how these gendered narratives relate to genre, and more specifically, where these performances and videos adhere to, expand on, or break from country music tropes and traditions. Adopting an interlocking theoretical approach grounded in genre theory, gender theory, narrative theory in the context of popular music, and happiness theory, I examine how, as a female artist in the country music industry, Underwood uses genre-blending to construct complex gendered narratives in her musical texts. Ultimately, I find that in her Blown Away Tour: Live DVD, Underwood uses diverse narrative strategies, sometimes drawing on country tropes, to engage techniques and stylistic influences of several pop and rock styles, and in doing so explores the gender norms of those genres. ii Acknowledgements A great number of people have supported this thesis behind the scenes, whether financially, academically, or emotionally.

STRITCH: My grandmother, Mary Alice Blair, was born in STRITCH: I never knew my grandfather. He died before I was Blessing, Texas, but her family moved to Sugar Land early in her born, in 1957 or so. My older sister is the only one who vaguely life. My grandmother and Buddy Blair were cousins. Mary Alice remembers him. He worked for a philanthropist in Houston whose was one of the founding families of First Presbyterian Church in name was Alonzo Welch. He had a foundation, the Welch Foundation, Sugar Land, founded in 1920 or so. There is definitely a Sugar which started in 1954, two years after Welch’s death in 1952. My Land connection that goes way back for us. grandfather was Mr. Welch’s right hand man. I know this through stories my grandmother told me over the years. At the time she married my dad, William Alfred Striech, they lived in Houston, where I was born in 1962. When I was about My dad who was an only child, who was raised in Houston. He went one, they decided to move out to Sugar Land and build a house. to Texas A & M for college and directly into the service afterward. Racial Gatekeeping in Country & Hip-Hop Music By Cervanté Pope Student ID #: 947767021 Portland State University Pope 2 Introduction In mass communication, gatekeeping refers to how information is edited, shaped and controlled in efforts to construct a “social reality” (Shoemaker, Eichholz, Kim, & Wrigley, 2001). Gatekeeping has expanded into other fields throughout the years, with its concepts growing more and more easily applicable in many other aspects of life. One way it presents itself is in regard to racial inclusion and equality, and despite the headway we’ve seemingly made as a society, we are still lightyears away from where we need to be. Because of this, the concept of cultural property has become even more paramount, as a means for keeping one’s cultural history and identity preserved.
