DESCENDANTS OF

SAMUEL HUNTER

OF AUGUSTA COUNTY, VIRGINIA

CHEYENNE, WYOMING Rev. 1964

Mesa Family History Center 41 S. Hobson Strget INTRODUCTION

Some years ago, in visiting friends in Missouri and Nehraskzi, I had with me a birthday book in which I obtained the name and date of birth of each relative I met, whether connected with my own family or that of my wife; and it afterwards occurred to me that I had a good beginning for a Family Register. I have since spent much time collecting material for that object. I have re cently published a Ustick Family Register, and have now in hand facts from which to form a partial Register of the Hunter family, the descendants of Sarn uel Hunter, oi Virginia. This pertains mostly to those families living in the west. I hope that someone will take up the matter where I leave off, make it more extensive, supply deficiencies and correct errors. As I have now entered upon the last half of my eightieth year I cannot promise to do anything more in this line, especially in the mechanical department; hut my daughter, Mrs. L. T. Thornely of Duhuque, would be glad to receive additional information pertaining to the history of the various branclies of the Hunter family, and will take pleasure in preserving such information for future reference; and we hereby solicit correspondence with those connected with the family, either by descent or marriage, and especially those who are represented in these pages. In the Register individuals are numbered consecutively. The figure pre ceding the name indicates the individual number, and the Roman numeral which follows it refers to the generation. For example: “23. III. William Hunter, 6th child of Robert (4).” Here 23 is William l"Iunte1"snumber, and III shows that he is of the 3rd generation, commencing with Samuel Hunter, of Virginia. The figure in parenthesis gives the fz1tl1er’snumber. W. W. USTICK

PERSONAL SKETCHES AND OBITUARIES

Although Miss Thompson is not descended from the Hunter family, she is so nearly related to them—her mother being the wife of John Hunter (2)— and she was so much interested in the family, that we consider it proper to give this sketch :1 place in the Register.

From the Presbyterian. MISS JANE ALEXANDER THOMPSON This extraordinary woman closed her earthly pilgrimage in Collinsville, 111., Sept. 28, 1882, in the 75th year of her age. She was born in Augusta County, Va., about eight miles from Staunton, within the bounds of Tinkling Spring Church, of which she afterwards was a member. In her early woman hood, in the year 1831, she came to Missouri, and made her home in Wash ington County, near Caledonia. She there united with the Concord Presby terian Church, which is now the Bellevue Church. She taught school occasionally in Potosi and Caledonia for two or three years, and then turned her attention to merchandizing, to which she devoted the principal part of her life. For this purpose she located in Caledonia, where she continued to reside until two and a half years ago, when she made her home with relatives in and near Collinsville, Ill. Her career was in all respects a grand success. With no capital, excepting her inherent worth and native efficiency, she embarked in business unsuitable to female talent, and by it amassed a considerable fortune. Her business transactions were marked by unusually sound judgement and the most unflinching integrity. Steady ad herence to her chosen vocation, strict regard to right principles, unfaltering truthfulness, self-respect, charity toward others, great dignity of character and faith in God, were prominent traits in her character. She was widely known, and always with admiration. With no disrespect to her, her mind may he said to have been of the masculine order. It was the exhibition of strength and simplicity. She had a robust physical constitution, even temperament, and almost perfect mastery of her spirit and habits. She, hence, presented at once, that dignity which is best seen in repose, and that strength which inheres in u well—regulated life. One feature of her character to which may be attributed in a large meas ure, her unusual success, was her practical wisdom. She had rare soundness of judgement and genuine common sense. She did not often say or do a foolish thing. She thought well upon every subject presented to her mind, and profited by the opinions of others. For the correctness of her views others sought her counsel. Businessmen often found her opinions preferable to their own. Her course in reference to all matters was remarkably discreet and free from im pulse or passion. With due deference to the wisdom of such men as consti tuted the ruling eldership of the church to which she belonged, her judgement in ecclesiastical matters was entitled to as much consideration as that of any of them. This they felt and cheerfully conceded. The community and church in 35 HUNTER FAMILY REGISTER which she spent the majority of her life are greatly indebted to her wisdom and fidelity shown in all matters touching their welfare. Another trait conspicuous in her character was her resolute devotion to what she believed to be right. Her positions were taken with caution and after mature reflection. When convinced of the correctness of her position she was firm, yet reasonable in maintaining it. This resoluteness was free from anything like obstinacy. It was the stability that belongs to enlightened con viction. Through all the years of the writer’s acquaintance with her, he does not recall a single instance in which he had any reason to believe she was arbitrary in maintaining her views. Her decision of character was admirable, and her exhibition of it never failed to command for her the utmost respect. She feared not man, but God. Resolute, outspoken, fearless, cautious, her posi tion was well known, and secured for her confidence and esteem. Those who differed with her were compelled to respect her. It is easy to conclude that she exerted a great influence over all who knew her. A third prominent feature in her character (and others might be men tioned) was her consistent and even piety. She was converted to Christ when young. From the time her connection was formed with the Bellevue Church, she was closely allied with all its interests, and for almost fifty years an influ ential and beloved member of the communion. Her zeal for God’s house never Ialtered. Her best days and strength were given to the Redeemer’s cause. To the local organization she was strongly attached, and her Christian charity was as broad as the universe. With no disparagerncnt to others, we believe it is due to her to say that the Bellevue Church is indebted more to her than to any member it has ever had. This is much to say; but there is much which deserves to be said of the subject of this sketch which this paper cannot con tain. There is but one surviving member of that church whose membership in it is commensurate with that of Miss Thompson. For half a century her light shone on undimmed by either prosperity or adversity. She was a mem ber of that church under every pastor it has had. She was always among its most hearty and liberal supporters. She was with it in its trials, and never forsook it in troublous days. As she loved the truth and the Gospel pure and simple, she stood firm in her devotion to them to the end. Her piety was not of a fitful kind—~it was a constant flame——andno influence ever induced her to deny her Lord. Her example was a convincing sermon, and her strong faith a sweeping argument for a cause which was dearer to her than her life. Who ever her pastor might be he had in the discharge of his duties a sympathizer and supporter in Miss Jane Thompson. She was absent from her post of duty, or her pew was vacant, only for the most valid reasons. Yet there was no ostentation in anything she did. Her habits were plain and becoming; her charity discreet and liberal. There was a childlike tenderness about her piety that invested it with charming beauty, and made her a delightful and profit able companion. Her conversation was always engaging, and never flippant or illtimed. Expressions often fell from her lips that were gems of thought worthy of a place among the best utterances of man. Were the records of her long life compiled in a justly written volume, it would doubtless prove to be among the most interesting and profitable biographies that have yet appeared in this country. The Presbyterian Church in Missouri has had few, if any, such women. Let God be thanked for such gifts to His church, and for the influence of such a life. ' T, C, BA}mETT_ APPENDIX

MAJOR WILLIAM LOCKHART HUNTER From the Elgin Illinois Courier. Death of a Citizen to Whom Heroic Adventure Was (2Pastime At Austin, Texas, on Tuesday evening, Oct. 26, 1886, there died a re spected resident of Elgin whose career was so romantic, indeed heroic, that it surpasses the inventions of the story writers in thrilling interest. A quiet, mod est man, Judge Hunter shrunk from notoriety, and never, save with the com panions of his adventures, would he discuss his life-story. Yet this man’s exis tence has been one gigantic struggle for liberty, and a patriotic lesson not ex celled by that of any martyr of the war of independence. He laughed at dan ger, and freely offered his all on the altar of his country. A hero of two wars, a companion to Houston and Fanningand Crockett, he survived all his associates and was long a historic character in the section where his adventures lay; a character venerated and beloved. William L. Hunter was southern born, and had always lived in the south until the breaking out of the war, yet he Was a unionist and a Republican. He boldly advocated his principles, and saw a fortune disappear. Even the rope did not make him quail. Born in Virginia in 1809, he went to New Orleans in 1830 as a manu facturer’s agent. The yellow fever swept the city and his partner died. Thou sands perished. Then he turned his eyes to that part of Mexico which was the State of Texas. He was then an officer in the celebrated New Orleans Grays. On one voyage from New Orleans to Galveston, his ship was wrecked and but two were saved, Mr. Hunter and a Swedish sailor. They were washed by the waves for three days. This man, Mr. Hunter afterwards provided for, and kept on his place until he died. In the war for Texan independence he was a trusted associate of the heroic spirits who carried to a successful outcome the revolt of the Lone Star repub lic against Mexican tyranny. He was one of the signers of the declaration of independence, and consequently a marked man. As no other man could claim, he was at both the Alamo and the Goliad. From the former fort no man escaped alive, save three couriers who were sent by the intrepid David Crockett, after Col. Travis had fallen, on a vain errand for aid. Major Hunter was one of these couriers. When, after all but six had fallen, Crockett accepted Santa Anna’s proffers of quarter, only to be butchered in cold blood with his five fellows, Major Hunter had arrived at the Goliad. In this defense, which ended March 6, 1838, every man of the garrison of 172 men perished; but they sold their lives dearly. 1,600 of their 4,000 besiegers were killed. This was the Thermopylae of the war for Texan independence. “Remember the Alamo,” is today the war cry of Texas. Three weeks afterward, Santa Anna attacked Col. Fannin at the Goliad. After a hard fought battle, in which nearly half his force fell, Fannin and 357 survivors surrendered. Maj. Hunter was one of these. The Texans were ranged in line on the wide beach, and despite the pledges of safety on which they surrendered were shot down. This revolting massacre occurred on the San Antonio River, in Goliad County, March 27, 1836. Col Fannin, after the fall of the Alamo, had been ordered to fall back from Goliad to Victoria. When six miles from Goliad they were surrounded by the Mexicans. Fannin gave battle against great odds, and held his line four days. They were marched back 38 HUNTER FAMILY REGISTER to Coliad by the victorious Mexicans and crammed into a Cllllfch, from which, after four days, they were taken out on Palm Sunday and shot in cold blood, the Mexicans not even having the decency to b11rythem, t0 Which fact Mr. Hunter owed his life. Maj. Hunter was not shot when the murderous Grease;-s did their bloody deed. At the order to fire he fell to the g1'0u“d- When the Mexicans rifled the bodies he lay unhurt. He wore a leather Shirt or jacket, which was sewed close to his wrists. The brutal robber, in cutting this 10058, gashed deep into his flesh. Involuntarily he winced. Seeing that life W35 1101 gone he plunged his bayonet into the Texan’s neck. Then he struck him a frightful blow on the head. Many hours after, Mr. Hunter revived. His un daunted spirit gave him strength, despite his seemingly fatal hurts, to drag himself several miles, and after four days spent in the WOOCIS110reached the house of a Mexican woman, who although knowing her life might be a forfeit, secreted him in a barn, nursed and fed him for weary weeks, until at last he made his escape. Once the place was searched by the Mexicans, but his hidingplace, a barrel, was almost by miracle, undisturbed. This woman was supported in comfort by his generous bounty while he lived. After the ending of this war, Mr. Hunter purchased the site of the l\/Iassacre of the Goliad, carefully gathered together the bleached bones of his late com rades, gave them a decent burial and erected a monument over them. There he lived and flourished, and there, he having married, his son, William F. Hunter, was born. He was honored by his neighbors. For fourteen years he was County Judge and also postmaster of Goliad. Wealth rewarded him for his sufferings, and he enjoyed the comforts of a quiet life. Thus more than twenty years passed, and again the muttcrings of war were heard; the outbreak of the rebellion. On his place were scores of Negroes whom he had purchased. They were not slaves, for he had given them their freedom and paid them wages. The owner of 33,000 acres of the best land in Texas, 25,000 head of cattle and much other property, Judge Hunter had much to lose. His neighbors were rabid secessionists, but he boldly proclaimed his Republicanism. Hostilities began and he was warned to leave. Finally a public meeting was held and a resolution was passed to hang him. The chair man of the meeting was his near friend, to whom he, not more than a month before, had loaned $5,000. A committee waited on him with a rope. He was at the bedside of a dying friend. The latter’s eloquent pleadings and his own cool courage saved his life. Despite his early military life he went among those desperate men unarmed. What pointed their malice was the fact that most of them owed him sums of money, and they thus sought to conceal their debts. He had early taken his family north for safety, and returned to meet these perils. Finally his house was sacked, $30,000 in notes and mortgages destroyed, his cattle confiscated and his land sold. A copy of the proscription bill has been preserved by him as a memento. Judge Hunter finally came north. Of his fortune he had saved just $1,600. Half of this he paid on a note which he had endorsed for a relative, P1-ac tically he was penniless. About 1862 he came to Elgin, with his wife, son (since postmaster of this city), and infant daughter, now Mrs. \\'/ill Yarwood of Redwood, Dakota. Elgin has since been his home, but he has spent his win ters in Texas. His whole life since the war has been devoted to the good of others. He returned at its close and looked after his property and colored charges. Suits APPENDIX 39 at law recovered part of the property. Three years after the declaration of peace he found an old colored “Aunty,” who had for years been a servant in his family. She wept tears of joy at meeting him, and begged of him to tell her if she was really free. She, with the rest, had been sold into slavery when he was driven out, and had been kept at work without pay long after the war had ended. The suit for wages which Judge Hunter commenced for this Negro woman made her oppressor a poor man. He divided up part of his land among his old servants, and some of them became prosperous farmers. Such kept him a moderately poor man, although he doubtless owned much land at the time of his death. Racked with asthma for years, and enfeebled by wounds and age, his step was tottering, yet his mind was clear as ever, and he was an active man up lo the time he died. Two weeks ago he left here for Austin to act as one of the state pension board, an office he had long held. He never accepted a pen sion himself, but worked for his fellow veterans. One errand he hurried back to perform, despite recent severe illness, was to accompany a commission to the city of Mexico to bring back the remains of an old companion. He had fought the Mexicans with C01. Frank Johnson in 1836. In the war with Mexico, ten years later, Col. Johnson was killed at the capital and buried there. Fifty years ago the friends had promised each other to be buried side by side. Recently the Texan government arranged to bring Johnson’s body to the Na tional Cemetery at Austin, and it was desired that Mr. Hunter, as his nearest friend, be present. The wish of half a century ago is now fulfilled. Today all Austin followed the remains of their patriot to the grave, and the gallant .lohnson’s ashes are on their way to be laid by his side.

From the Elgin Daily News. In Austin, Texas, on Tuesday evening, October 26, 1886, Major William L. Hunter died, after a short illness, aged 77. The Major, in many respects, was one of the most remarkable men of the age. His courage was only equalled by his modesty, and thus his wonderful career was known but to his most intimate friends. Now that he has passed away, it is fitting that the outline of his life be given to his fellow-citizens, by whom he was greatly esteemed. A Virginian by birth, at an early age he went to Texas and settled, a pioneer, at Goliad, where he gave his best energies to develop the State. In 1835, when the provisional government was formed, independence declared, and Samuel Houston chosen Commander-in-Chief, Mr. Hunter was one of the foremost promoters of the cause, and fought through the war with Mexico till the United States and some European powers acknowledged the independence of the “Lone Star" republic. Perhaps the best known of the battles of the Texo-Mexican war was the battle of the Alamo, and the subsequent massacre. This Texas fort, defended by a mere handful of Americans, was surrounded by a Mexican army of 8,000 men, commanded by Santa Anna. Its defenders were nearly all slain. The battle fought near Goliad was a severe one, and was overcome by numbers: the Americans surrendered upon the promise of the Mexican President that their lives would be spared. Disregarding his pledge Santa Anna caused the prisoners. who had been taken to the old mission 40 HUNTER FAMILY REGISTER

church of Goliad, to be placed in line and shot. Mr. Hunter was among the number, but; lmderstanding Spanish, at the order to fire he dropped as if shot, and for the time escaped notice. Soon afterward it gfefl-‘Fer,100l

CHARLES HENRY WINSLOW Charles H. Winslow died at his home at Mount Pleasant, Cass County, Nebr., Sept. 10, 1373. He had felt for some months that he was nearing the end, and prepared to go. He was born in Hallowell, Maine, Nov. 8, 1816. He came west and settled in St. Louis in 1849,where he was married to Miss Sarah M. Hunter Nov. 13, 1851. They moved to Nebraska in 1862. He was a memhtrr of the M.E. Church for thirty-seven years; he was a devgted Christian and a APPENDIX 41 faithful worker in the church. He was also a strong advocate of temperance and an active worker in the cause. In 1851 he was elected Grand Worthy Patriarch of the Sons of Temperance for the State of Missouri, and delegate to the National Convention which met in Toronto, Canada. Mr. Winslow was a descendant of Edward Winslow, one of the Pilgrims of the Mayflower, afterward Governor of Plymouth Colony. Like him he was active, earnest, generous and persevering. Mr. Winslow left to mourn his loss a widow, two daughters, Jennie T. and Kate and a son, Henry; also a son and daughter by a former wife. The son, the late Judge C. A. Winslow, of Jefferson City, Mo., was considered one of the leaders of the Missouri bar, and by many was deemed the best lawyer of his age in the state. Judge Winslow died Nov. 18, 1883. Mr. Winslow was for many years a member of the Board of Agriculture of the State of Nebraska, and at a meeting of the Board of Managers resolu tions were unanimously adopted expressing in the warmest terms their high regard for him as a worthy and influential member of their body, and ex tending to the bereaved family their sympathy. At a meeting of the State Historical Society, Jan. 22, 1879, Mr. J. T. Allen spoke as follows: “A member who has labored with us has passed away, and there is a vacant chair. I refer to Hon. C.'H. Winslow, of Cass. The memory of pleasant intercourse with this ardent worker in all that pertains to the ad vancement we seek for Nebrziska’s horticulture makes it a duty to connect his memory with the Society and the State. ‘Let us remember with gratitude that the Great Disposer of events, who has removed our co-worker, has spared us to labor together for the advancement of our cause and the good of mankind. Death has opened for him, as it will for us, the gate to the higher mysteries, the clearer and grander scope wherein he grasps the full extent of things he knew here only in outline. Today he rests from the toil and labor of life, and we trust has found joy and rest and peace in the eternal gardens of God.’ There fore, Mr. President, I move that a suitable testimonial be prepared and spread upon our records, and that as the years move on there shall be a history of the founders of this society.” Mr. Winslow was an affectionate husband and loving father, and his loss was felt deeply in the community where he lived.

JAMES S. HOWARD

J. 3. Howard was born in Indiana April 21, 1854-,died Aug. 4, 1920. When a small boy his parents moved to Illinois. When he was about eight years old they moved to Cass County, Nebr. At twelve years of age he became a member of the M. E. Church. His father was always a M. E. Church member, naming his son J. S. after a Methodist minister. About this time his mother died. In 1879, Aug. 16, he was married to Jennie Thompson Winslow. In 1882 he and his family moved near Thayer, Nebr., living there seven years before moving to their home one and one-half miles northeast of Benedict, Nebr. To this union four children were born: Julia, Gertrude, Karl and Ina. Those who remain to mourn his loss are his devoted wife, son, Karl and daughter, Mrs. Ina Lytle, eight gI‘ilI1(lCh11(l1‘eI1,‘tl1I"e6 brothers and three sisters. He joined the Benedict Methodist Church in its 4,2 HUNTER FAMILY nsersrra beginning in 1891, became a prominent and enthusiastic nielinber. 1He was religious, devout and enthusiastic. JENNIE THOMPSON WINSLOW

Jennie Thompson Winslow was born in Kansas City, MO., D€C- 18, 1852: the daughter of Charles Henry and Sarah Martha Winslow. The next year the family moved to Nebraska, living for two years at Nebraska City on.a farm now occupied by Arbor Lodge. On April 17, 1865, the day President L1I1C01T1’S funeral train left Washington, the Winslow family moved to Cass County, Nebr., settling near Nehawka and Union, where they took their part in the religious and social life of the community. Jennie Vt7inslowand James S. Howard (son of William H. Howard, also a pioneer family) were married at her home in Mt. Pleasant precinct on Au gust 16, 1879. In 1882 Mr. and Mrs. Howard moved to York County, locating on a farm southwest of Thayer. Seven years later, they moved to the farm near Benedict where Mrs. Howard has lived until her death, Oct. 28, 1931. To this union were born three daughters, Julie, Gertrude and Ina and one son, Karl. In her youth Mrs. Howard united with the Methodist Church and has always been an earnest worker in all its activities, teaching Sunday School, serving on the official board and working in various women’s societies. Out side of home and church, she found time for work in the Women’s Club, W.C.T.U. and P.T.A. She was also a member of the D.A.R. chapter in Hastings. Mrs. Howard was recognized as a woman of unusual ability. She was a keen business woman, one of the outstanding women in York County in that line. She has always been interested in the activities of girls and young women, serving for a year as house mother of the Girls Club of York and for many years as teacher of a class of young women in Benedict Sunday School. Mrs. Howard is survived by her son, Karl and daughter, Mrs. Ina Lytle, a sister, Kate Davis and a brother Henry A. Winslow and nine grandchildren. She will be affectionately remembered by her grandchildren for her keen interest in their education, and for the high ideals she inspired in them by the example she set in her own daily living.
