Kaczynski is the original radical environmentalist & ecologist! - He aluded the American justice system for 17 years! - He has acquired the status of a revolutionary ‘icon’! - The US government has re-assembled his Colorado cabin in the Crime Museum in Washington! - The present environmental catastrophe is a necessary consequence of man’s enslavement to technology, he argues!

Now, for the first time since his imprisonment in 1996, we hear directly from the Unabomber himself - the complete, definitive, and authorized texts. Kaczynski reveals his latest thoughts on the deconstruction of technological society. Rather than the road to disaster, Kaczynski urges us to follow the ROAD TO REVOLUTION as our only viable option. Kaczynski attended Harvard University and earned his Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Michigan. At the age of 25, he became an assistant professor at the University of California, Berkley. He moved to a remote cabin in Lincoln, Montana in 1971 and he became the Unabomber. The FBI invented the term “UNABOM” which then became the acronym for him, the UNABOMBER. After 17 years of frustrating the FBI in one of the largest manhunts in US history, Kaczynski’s brother recognized his writing style and that led to his arrest. To avoid the death penalty, Kaczynski pled guilty and was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

“What is scandalous is to think that immunity becomes impunity...People (getting) elected not to serve their country but to avoid being prosecuted.” - The Guardian

This is an important book - especially today! In many, many countries, members of Parliament and political leaders are using the ‘right’ of parliamentary immunity to avoid the criminal justice system and criminal prosecution. Berlusconi, Yeltsin, Portillo, Mugabe and many, many others! Most peple would probably agree that a member of parliament or a national assembly should enjoy immunity while in parliament. The question arises: what should be the extent of such immunity and should it extend beyond the precincts of parliament or the assembly? This book argues that no member of any national legislative body anywhere, in any country, should enjoy special immunity from the criminal justice system. The issue is urgent because more than 70% of the nations of the world spell out clearly in their constitutions or in legislation that members of their parliaments or national assemblies may either not be prosecuted, or detained, or arrested without prior consent of parliament or the assembly in which they sit.

Joseph Maingot is one of the world’s leading experts on parliamentary procedure. He served as Legal Counsel to the Parliament of Canada for many years, has served on innumerable commissions, nationally and internationally. He is the author of numerous articles and Parliamentary Privilege in Canada.

Canada Joel Champetier is the star of 1252 Speers Road Units 1 & 2 Fantasy Writers!!! Oakville, Ontario L6L 5N9 Ph/Fax 905.825.2130 La Memoire du lac / U.S.A. PMB 145, 4500 Witmer Industrial Estates Niagara Falls, New York The Memory of the Lake 14305-1386 Ph/Fax 1.800.387.8992 by Joel Champetier [email protected]

The central character in La Memoire du lac is Daniel Verrier. He witnesses his own children drowning as his pickup truck breaks through thin ice and sinks in a freezing Lake Temiscamingue. He is consumed by guilt. His marriage comes apart, he discovers evidence of bizarre, ritualistic murders that he begins to connect to ancient North American lore about the lake and his children’s tragic deaths. Like King, he writes about what he knows, as he lived in northern Quebec, the people of small towns into whose lives the ‘unbelievable’ intrudes. From all of this he weaves a remarkable tapestry of suspense, magic, the unknown.

“…(Champetier has) put the blip of Quebecois horror on the media radar screen…Champetier’s La Memoire du lac/The Memory of the Lake reeks (in a good way) of the influence of Stephen King, engaging its reader in the downward spiral… La Peau blanche/White Skin…the novel makes one of the most sophisticated social commentaries on the issue of race to come out of Quebec… La Peau blanche/White Skin represents a perfect work of genre suspense horror, as does its successful translation to film by Daniel Roby” The New York Review of Science Fiction, May 2007

Joel Champetier has won almost all the major awards of science fiction and fantasy in Quebec and Canada, including 2 Aurora Grand Prix, Prix Boreal 5 times, Finalist in the Quebec/Wallonie-Bruxelles Prize, the Grand Prix de la science-fiction et du fantastique quebecois, and more!

In 2009, a new film entitled Public Enemies will be released world-wide with Johnny Depp as John Dillinger and Giovanni Rabisi as Alvin Karpis and directed by Michael Mann. Public interest in 1930’s crime legends will be at another all-time high!

In the history of crime, the FBI tagged only four men as Public Enemy Number One - John Dillinger, “Pretty Boy” Floyd, “Baby Face” Nelson and Alvin “Creepy” Karpis. Only Karpis lived and did not meet a brutal death. In 1936, the FBI arrested Karpis in New Orleans and he was sentenced to life in prison. He was locked up in America’s most notorious prison, Alcatraz island in San Francisco Bay. He was the longest serving inmate of Alcatraz, 25 years!

On the Rock is Karpis’ personal story of the desperate and insane world of Alcatraz prison - the criminals, the killers, the inmates, the guards, the brutality, the sexual perversions, the bloody deaths! He tells it all! On the Rock was origially published in 1980 in Canada and became a best-seller in both hardcover and mass market. Now, the revised and updated edition includes a chapter on Karpis’ final years of life in Spain and the mystery of his death.

Also available a rare one-hour TV interview with Avin Karpis filmed in 1976.

Islam’s Predicament is a small effort in that urgently need- ed larger and wider struggle against radical Muslims, or Islamists, who have wrecked the Muslim world and have spread fear and violence indiscriminately among non-Muslims.” - Salim Mansur, from the Preface

Dr. Salim Mansur, a Muslim, was born in Calcutta, India and moved to Canada where he received his Ph.D. from the . He is now an Associate Professor at the University of Western Ontario. He is a renowned voice in the debate of moderate vs. militant Islam, the author of numerous articles published in the Jerusalem Quarterly, American Journal of Islamic Social Sciences, The Journal of South Asian and Middle Eastern Studies, Arab Studies Quarterly, Middle East Quarterly, a frequent contributor to the Globe & Mail, The National Post, Toronto Sun, National Review online and others, a frequent commentator and analyst on radio and television, including the PBS Jim Lehrer Hour, and in 2006, he received the American Jewish Con- gress’ Stephen S. Wise “Profile in Courage” award. Islam’s Predicament brings together Dr. Mansur’s most important essays written over the last decade, previously published in various journals and media. Starting with “The War within Islam” he then goes on to “Three Muslim Perspectives”, ‘Of Danish Cartoons, Muslim Rage and the Bedouin State of Mind”, “Muslim on Muslim Violence”, “Keeping Faith in the Age of Islamist Terror” and much more. Always accurate and well-argued, always well-researched and tolerant, yet always passionate and convincing…these essays are an urgent antidote to the polemics and rage that seem to dominate the debate about contemporary Islam. A Memoir U.S.A. PMB 145, 4500 Witmer by William Prendiville Industrial Estates Niagara Falls, New York 14305-1386 For most people it is Paris, the city of romance and more. But to the locals it is Ph/Fax 1.800.387.8992 known as Paname. Edith Piaf sang about it, others did as well. [email protected]

Paris…a city that has inspired endless numbers of writers and artists through the centuries. It remains the mecca for countless creative people who dream about launching their artistic careers, who seek their inspiration from the sights, the sounds, the characters, the adventures of a Parisian life. William Prendiville is another such aspiring writer. Paname/ Paris: A Memoir is a series of adventures and misadventures about living, working, loving in Paris and in the French country- side.

The main character works in factories, as a dancing waiter in an American-theme bar, in a rural winery run on the bases of Steiner metaphysical farming principles, and more. He meets drunks, writers with writer’s block, copywriters, copy-correc- tors, translators, spurned lovers, horny lovers, failed flailing entrepreneurs, a mad baker, french bon-vivants and part-time pornographers. He moves haplessly from apartment to apart- ment, neighbourhood to neighbourhood, from the red light district to haute-couture.

Paname/Paris: A Memoir is a genuine tour through Paris and and all its parts…and you begin to appreciate the narrator, slightly simple, somewhat sophisticated, somewhat angry, a little pretentious, and always hopeful…but never fulfilled. He is like the 200000 other aspiring artists who venture into and out of Paris each decade!

by Jay Tunney The Prizefighter and Co-published by Mosaic Press and The Shaw Festival The Playwright

In 1882, George Bernard Shaw published a novel entitled “Cashel Byron’s Pro- fession.” It is the story of a fictional Irish boxer, a school drop-out, of humble origins, who becomes a world famous prizefighter. Two years into his illustrious boxing career, he abandons his profession to marry a wealthy aristocratic wom- en with whom he has four children. The novel was not a great success. Forty years later, the career of Gene Tunney, heavyweight boxing cham- pion of the world, appeared to be the carbon copy of Shaw’s novel. Tunney was Gene Tunney of Irish origins, a school drop out at the age of 15, became the most celebrated and scientific heavyweight champion, abandoned his career at its apogee to marry George Bernard Shaw a Carnegie, Mary ‘Polly’ Lauder, and had four children. Tunney was also a self- by Jay Tunney educated renaissance man, who read widely, an admirer of Shaw and, clearly, adored Shaw’s novel. Tunney and Shaw met, formed a lasting and intense friendship. Tunney, the boxer, was a voracious reader who admired people of intellect and literary accomplishment. Shaw was intrigued by the themes of the fighting spirit and upward mobility, all captured in the life and times of Gene Tunney. Now, finally, Jay Tunney has given us a book that explores and documents this unique friendship. Based upon original documents, memoirs and personal accounts, Jay Tunney has written a compelling story that deep- ens our appreciation of both Tunney the boxer and Shaw the playwright, and the turbulent times and places in which they lived. Jay Tunney is a well respected businessman and theatre patron, known in New York’s theatrical commu- nity, a member of the Board on the Shaw Festival, a lecturer and writer. [email protected]

the The Frankfurter Rundschau noted that his work has: weimar “…many voices…character full portraits…including humour, laconic irony… triangle varied story-telling techniques…always new and surprising..”

Last year, Mosaic Press published Koch’s novel Premonitions that takes place in Munich in the decade prior to 1914 and explores the cultural turmoil and innova- tions of that era. This new novel extends Koch’s achievements of I Remember the Loca- Eric Koch tion…Exactly and Premonitions to Weimar and of 1927. The two years, 1927 and 1928, were relatively good years in Weimar, Germany and hopes were high that Germany would find its place in a peaceful and prosperous Europe. The location of the novel is Frankfurt, Koch knew so well as he was born there in 1919 and lived there until 1935. The trigger for the novel is the major cultural event of 1927, the International Music Exhibition – ‘The Summer of Mu- sic”. Koch again uses a multi-format narrative technique so highly praised in the German reviews of Recol- lections, including stories, excerpts from imagined memoirs, invented diaries, letters and even a synopsis of a never-produced operetta about the failed Hitler putsch of 1923, “Putsching with Putzi.”

The three main characters are: Hanni Geisel, an amateur musician and hostess of star-studded Saturday ‘dejeuners’; her lover Erwin Herzberg, the editor of the culture sections of the Frankfurter Zeitung; and Hanni’s husband, Dr. Hermann Geisel, a successful lawyer and art-collector. These three main characters constitute the Weimar triangle. As in all of Koch’s historically based novels, we meet an array of important characters of the period, Paul Hindemith, Walter Benjamin, Theodor Adorno, Martin Buber, Franz Rosenz- weig, Thomas Mann, Erich Ludendorff and others, all of whom are woven masterfully into this new work by Koch.

Eric Koch has written eleven novels and four works of non-fiction. His works have been translated into Ger- man and Chinese. He was awarded the Canadian Jewish Book Award twice, in 1996 and in 2007. He lives in Toronto, ON.

A novel by Eric Koch

In the decade before 1914 Schwabing, the suburb of Munich, was a magnet which drew artists, writers, freethinkers and many others who wanted to opt out of bour- geois society and experiment with new ideas. It was the Haight-Ashbury of early 20th Europe. Richard Schlosser is a young man from North German who goes to Munich to study medicine. He suffers from severe sleep deprivation, obsessed by his break with his father, a Lutheran cler- gyman. Richard is drawn to Schwabing to see Dr. Otto Gross, an exciting personality, the son of a famous crimi- nologist, a disciple of Freud, an anarchist and also a drug-addict. When Richard tries to contact him he discovers he has disappeared. Has he run away? Is he dead? Was he murdered? Has he planned his own disappearance? All of Schwabing is abuzz. Richard begins his own, slow, meticulous hunt, assisted by the daughter of a bookseller with whom he falls in love. In his investigations he encounters a number of Schwabing’s most lively personalities, members of Stefan George’s ‘Cosmic Circle’, the Countess Franziska von Reventlow who is a leading member of Schwabing’s ‘Erotic Movement’, the young Thomas Mann, Kandinsky, Paul Klee and other painters, the anarchists Gustav Landauer and Erich Mühsam, and many others who frequent Schwabing’s cafés. In his final encounter in 1913 he meets Adolf Hitler who has just arrived from Vienna. Part mystery/sus- pense novel, part intellectual history of Germany and Europe of the early 20th century, Premonitions is quintes- sential Eric Koch. Eric Koch’s most recent work, I Remember the Location Exactly, Foreword by Alfred Grosser, (Mosaic Press, 2006 ) won the Canadian Jewish Book Award and will be published in German by Weidle Verlag in 2008. He is the author of 10 works of fiction, 5 works of non-fiction and his works have been translated into Ger- man, Italan and Chinese.

A significant new work by the renowned literary critique and historian N.N.Shneidman of University of Toronto.

He is widely acknowledged as one of the leading experts on Soviet and Russian literature and his publications from 1973 to his most recent work, Russian Literature 1995- 2002: On the Threshold of the New Millenium, published by the University of Toronto Press in 2004, are widely and favourably reviewed and very well know. His two other works, Jerusalem of Lithuiania: The Rise and Fall of Jewish Vilnus, 1998 and The Three Tragic Heroes of the Vilnius Ghetto: Witenberg, Sheinbaim, Gens, 2002, both published by Mosaic Press, won the Canadian Jewish Book Award.

“This volume examines contemporary literary texts in which Jewish characters ap- pear, or Jewish issues are discussed, written in the Russian language and published in Russia proper, in the years between 1991 and 2006, by writers currently residing in that country. I investigate how Jews view themselves in the new post-Soviet era, how they are perceived by their Russian neighbours, and how these attitudes have changed with the demise of the Soviet state.” (from the Introduction)

This is an indispensible volume as it provides us with insight into many of the most current literary texts from Russia and explores the major new and old currents now pervading this new Russian literature.

Benn (McMaster university), Jinhua Chen [email protected] (University of British Columbia), James Robson (Harvard University) A major collection of important essays by many of the lead- ing scholars in the field of Buddhism, including Phyllis Granoff from Yale University, T.H.Barrett from the University of London, Raoul Birnbaum from University of California, Toru Funayama from Kyoto University, Eugene Wang from harvard university and others. “The spread of Buddhism in Asia may be viewed from one perspective as a protracted and complex process in which numerous sacred sites were continually created and recreated in different parts of Asia. The story of Buddhism increasinly penetrating into all levels of society in Asia is mirrored by another narrative in which some of the most sacred sites in India were reproduced in other parts of the world. This reproduction or doubling was, however, never a simple matter of transplantation; rather it in- volved complex cultural adjustments and inventions. The study of Buddhist sacred sites in South and East Asia, therefore, yields some revealing new perspectives on the cross-cultural issues created by the “Buddhist conquest of Asia.”

The volume sheds new light on issues such as pilgrimage; the development of Buddhist monasticism; the remembrance of Buddhist saints and patriarchs; Bud- dhist sacred sites and more, and deepens our understanding of the Buddhist tradi- tion.

The volume contains thirteen original articles plus a preface and full biblog- raphy. The volume is a Festschrift in honour of Professor Koichi Shinohara of Yale University. Pub Date: February 2010 ISBN: 0-88962-909-9 PB 350 pages 978-0-88962-909-7 PB mosaic press

Midnight Moscow explores the many facets of this ‘new’ Moscow as it really is - far removed from the ‘old’ Moscow, or the Soviet Moscow. It is also a woman’s story. The central character leaves her rural origins at the age of 21 to venture into and become successful in this new Moscow. Midnight Moscow is fiction but it is based on true stories and real events which happened in Moscow from 1998- 2008. “My novel has two major themes. First, I want to reveal the many faces of the new Moscow - the events, the people, the different characters and personalities, the throbing pace of the new reality, with its many warts and blemishes, for sure. It is not the city seen on CNN and BBC reports. The second theme relates to the main character who explores the new Moscow as a city of adventure as she pursues her career ambitions. She also explores and discovers her own sexuality. Life in Moscow is dramatic, thrilling, explicit, raw, wild but delicious. My novel is about a woman and like any woman, my main character has dreams, fears, falls in love, explores her own sexuality in many ways. To the new generation of women, Moscow is the sexual and liberal capital of the ‘new’ Russia. How to live and survive in this major city? Today, Russian women are finally able to enjoy sex and are not ashamed to talk about it. During the day, Orlova climbs the corporate ladder. At night she explores her ripe sexuality, enjoying her fantasies, the men, the adventures of the new Moscow.” The author lives in Moscow, has had a very successful career working in the oil and gas industry, owns a consulting company, travels extensively in Europe and North America, has published one book of poetry in 2006, is involved in charity work, reads the classics, studied for three years in the United States where she earned her Business Administration degree, and, she writes in English. This is her first novel. Aleksandra Orlova is working on a sequel to Midnight Moscow and also on a non-fiction book.

Canada A major new book breaking new ground in marketing 1252 Speers Road Units 1 & 2 Oakville, Ontario L6L 5N9 Affinity...beyond branding Ph/Fax 905.825.2130

by Martin Goldfarb LL.D., O.C., & Howard Aster Ph.D. U.S.A. PMB 145, 4500 Witmer Industrial Estates Niagara Falls, New York 14305-1386 This book is all about affinity. Ph/Fax 1.800.387.8992 [email protected]

Affinity is a new concept. It is a new way of thinking.

This book is cultural consumer anthropology. It is observing and understanding purchasing behaviour, it is about influencing that behaviour. Affinity is all about culture and the way we live; about the artifacts around us and how we feel or associate with them; it is the re-connection between business and the street, between the story-teller and the listener. Story-telling is fundamental to creating affinity and leadership in our society.

Brands come and go and try to re-create themselves. Good brands attach themselves and propagate values that are enduring. They can outlast the many economic cycles that are part of social transformation. How does a product tap into the enduring features of a culture or of a great story so that people want to hear the story again and again, go back to the product year after year, hear the message again and again or are even willing to re-tell that message to others?

Affinity is the result of effective branding process. Affinity is the result of effective story telling. It is the key to understanding consumer choice in the 21st century! Affinity has immense repercussions in the political world. How do people connect not just with products but with politicians?

Affinity is the clue, the key to unlocking this magic.

The global market place of products in the 21st century is dramatically changed. How do people make consumer choices today? What comes first...knowing or loving? Goggle has changed the world because every consumer can know. Knowledge is readily available. You may make a consumer choice because you fall in love with a product. People love their ‘Apples’! Sometimes knowing comes first or loving comes first. Today we can easily know the DNA of products. Technology is global. How to achieve differentiation in the market place? Affinity allows for this differentiation, it creates the enduring mysticism around the product.

How to move from a commodity attachment to create an emotional attachment? Can you create affinity? Can you move from the commodity category “made in China” to create affinity between Chinese products and consumers, that emotional bonding? By creating affinity to products coming from China, you create respect and you can raise the price points.

Origin can create affinity. Remember Japanese cars. It was the “J factor” which consumers wanted. They bought Japanese cars because of their quality. Is it possible now to create a “C factor” for China so that their products become a product of choice? You can do that by affinity.

The collective consensus is the genius of the market-place. It is this collective consensus which defines success and failure. There is a deep wisdom in how people behave in the market place. Often, it appears that they can be fooled. But this wisdom, this collective consensus, emerges again and again and produces results.

Affinity is the emotive consensus in the market place which underpins this intelligence and wisdom.

Canada A Different Look at Theresienstadt!!! 1252 Speers Road Units 1 & 2 Oakville, Ontario Behind the Curtain in Theresienstadt L6L 5N9 by Vera Schiff Ph/Fax 905.825.2130 U.S.A. Theresienstadt occupies a unique place in Holocaust history. The ‘vestiges’ of PMB 145, 4500 Witmer Industrial Estates this camp are today renowned throughout the world through the book and the Niagara Falls, New York exhibition “...I never saw another butterfly: Children’s Drawings and Poems of 14305-1386 Ph/Fax 1.800.387.8992 Terezin, the opera by Victor Ullman, The Kaizer from Atlantis, the children’s [email protected] opera Brundibar, many musical compositions that survived, although the composers perished and more.

Vera Schiff was born in Prague in 1926. She spent 3 years as an ‘inmate’ in Theresienstadt, the ‘show-piece’ of the Nazis during the Holocaust. At the age of 19, she was liberated by the Red Army. She survived. Her family did not.

Much has been written about Theresienstadt. But, as the author argues convincingly, what has been missing is “a comprehensive description of the unique camp’s infrastructure, varied activities, all of which could be of interest to the general readers and historians. This book fills that gap by offering insights into the camp’s structure, operational mechanic, its day by day activities...”

The author provides vivid and detailed descriptions of many aspects of life and survival in the camp, some of them quite surprising, including: - Health care in the Camp - The Hospital, the Staff and its departments, - Love and sex in Theresienstadt - Marriage and abortion - The Red Cross Commission - Music and the Creative Arts - The Children and Survival - Cruelty, Savagery and Compassion

Vera Schiff lives in Toronto, Ontario. She is a frequent speaker to high schools, universities and public organizations. She has published three previous books.
