Brinks Rea This dissertation examines the evidence for a dependent literary relationship between Isaiah 40-55, commonly called 2 Isaiah, and the book of Job. Scholars have long recognized certain similarities between these two works. Both emphasize ideas such as the transcendence of God, the lowliness and ignorance of human beings, and the power of God in relation to the creation. The authors of both works show at times a similarity in style of writing. Further, 2 Isaiah and Job share a number of words, phrases, and word strings that are unique within the Hebrew Bible. Finally, both works treat the idea of innocent suffering. Some scholars have judged that these similarities are more than coincidental and that one work is dependent on the other, although not all agree on which is the dependent work. One of the primary factors behind the difference of opinion is the uncertainty about the date of Job. While 2 Isaiah can be reliably dated based on internal evidence, the book of Job is very elusive in this regard, and scholars have posited historical contexts for Job that span hundreds of years. My project is to take a fresh look at the thematic, stylistic, and verbal similarities between 2 Isaiah and Job, aided by recent Christina L. Brinks Rea research into the phenomenon of intertextuality, with the goal of ascertaining the probability of a dependent relationship between them, describing the nature of their relationship if such exists, and exploring its implications for interpretation. Chapter 1 introduces 2 Isaiah and Job, particularly theories about the date and nature of their composition and the scope of the texts to be analyzed. Chapter 2 summarizes previous research on the relationship between 2 Isaiah and Job, including problems related to method. I also describe several recent studies on allusion and quotation in literary and biblical studies, including some relating to 2 Isaiah and Job. I then outline my own procedure for analyzing the similarities between 2 Isaiah and Job. Chapter 3 lists as systematically and comprehensively as possible the specific similarities between 2 Isaiah and Job in categories of thematic, stylistic, and verbal parallels, and similarities related to the idea of an innocent suffering servant. Chapter 4 analyzes the nature and distribution of these similarities in their contexts to determine what conclusions can be reached about the nature of the similarities and the relative chronology of the two works. I conclude that previous research has overstated the evidence for a special relationship between 2 Isaiah and Job, and that the claim that one work was inspired by or developed straightforwardly from the other does not hold in light of the evidence. Nevertheless, I suggest two cases in which it appears as if the author of Job is alluding to the text of 2 Isaiah. These allusions can be characterized as parody, and are similar to other cases in which the author of Job is believed to have parodied forms or specific texts known from elsewhere in the Hebrew Bible. Barton Payne [p.50] The four chapters of Isaiah 36-39 that appear also in II Kings 18-20 and that contain historical dialog between the prophet and his king, Hezekiah, have produced more critical debate than any other section of I and II Kings.1 They furnish also some of our primary evidence for the unity of the Book of Isaiah,2 forming, as Delitzsch has put it, a “bridge” to the prophecies that follow.3 A thorough treatment of this evidence hence becomes impossible under present limitations. The writer would seek, however, to indicate three specific areas within this larger discussion in which sharpened awareness may contribute to a defense of the total authority of Scripture. L. CONDITIONING FACTORS IN EVANGELICALISM’S APPROACH TO ISAIAH 36-39 If we take, for example, such a question as the relation of Isaiah 36-39 to II Kings 18-20, it appears at the outset that liberal and conservative writers reach opposite conclusions because of their respective methodologies. The liberal, e.g. S.R. Driver, limits his admissable evidence to inductive comparisons of literary detail and of thematic concepts; he thus decides in favor of the priority of Kings.4 The conservative, e.g. Franz Delitzsch, while utilizing historical prose style as a confirmatory factor, concentrates on two reasons that arise (1) out of an analogy with other sections of Kings and Isaiah and (2) out of the authority of Chronicles, deductively applied to the chapters in question; he thus insists upon the originality of Isaiah.5 Bible believing scholars appear to be conditioned by five distinctive principles.

It might be wrong to center everything on the differences between their reactions to God’s call, namely, Isaiah’s enthusiasm (Is 6:8) as opposed to Jeremiah’s fear (Jer 1:6). It might have been only a question of their different temperaments. Their respec- tive vocation and mission should be complementary, both in terms of what refers to their lives and writings and to the infl uence that both of them were going to exercise among believers. Isaiah is the prophecy while Jeremiah is the prophet. The two faces of prophet- ism complement each other and they are both equally necessary to reorient history. Isaiah represents the message to which people will always need to refer in order to reaffi rm their faith. Jeremiah is the ever present example of the suffering of human beings when God bursts into their lives. There is no room, therefore, for a sentimental view of a young, peaceful and defenseless Jeremiah who suffered in silence from the wickedness of his persecu- tors. There were hints of violence in the prophet (11:20-23). In spite of the fact that he passed into history because of his own sufferings, Jeremiah was not always the victim of the calamities that he had announced. In his fi rst announcement, Jeremiah said that God had given him authority to uproot and to destroy, to build and to plant, specifying that the mission that had been entrusted to him encompassed not only his small country but “the nations.” The magnitude to such a task assigned to a man without credentials might surprise us; yet it is where the fi nger of God does appear.

As a corollary to the problem, the Rokeach Dogmatism Scale and the Teaching Situation Reaction Test were administered to student teachers to determine if these tests could predict successful student teachers prior to their student teaching experience in the secondary schools of Montana. It was the purpose of this study, then, to record and analyze the verbal behavior patterns of two groups of secondary student teachers. One group, the control group, consisted of students who went through the regular training program. The other group received twenty hours of training in interaction analysis. Selected aspects of the reconstructed Flanders' matrix were compared and analyzed. Another aspect of the problem dealt with the possible predictive value of the Teaching Situation Reaction Test and the Rokeach Dogmatism Scale as they pertained to superior teaching. A comparison and analysis was made between scores achieved on the two tests and such quantitative elements as grade point average in the major subject area, mean scores on the rating forms used by Montana State University supervisors and the grade given to measure the success in student teaching.
