Lotus Notes 8 offers a modern look and feel in a familiar Lotus Notes format, which presents the tools you need, when and where you need them. Lotus Notes 8 introduces a client side architecture based on the Eclipse framework. This delivers the capability to run Eclipse-based code within the Lotus Notes rich client. Eclipse plug-ins can be used in the Lotus Notes sidebar or can be wired together with Lotus Notes applications as a composite application, to provide quick access to your business information in one view. You can also extend the client program, for example, adding search engines to the current list and customizing the user interface (UI). With Lotus Notes 8 users will also receive a set of IBM productivity tools. These tools allow for creation of word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation graphics files that are compatible with Open Document Format (ODF) and other commonly used formats. IBM Lotus Domino 8, the next installment of the security-rich messaging and collaboration platform, includes improvements in performance, administration, serviceability, and, in most cases, total cost of ownership (TCO). IBM Lotus Domino server software combines reliable, security-rich e-mail, calendar, and scheduling capabilities with a powerful platform for business collaboration. It offers solutions for messaging, customized business applications — or both — on a wide variety of operating systems. Lotus Domino, in combination with the rich Lotus Notes client, helps enhance employee productivity, streamlines business processes, and improve overall business responsiveness. IBM Lotus Domino 8 supports an open application infrastructure. With this functionality, all external events, (create, update, and delete) can now use either the internal or external key approach for virtual documents. • Lotus Connector automatically detects the external systems codepage where the RDBMS client supports it. This allows users to have a single Lotus Enterprise Integrator server talking to the different backend using different codepages for each connection. The RDBMS clients that support this are Oracle and SAP applications. • Improved diagnostic capabilities over previous versions of Lotus Enterprise Integrator.     Lotus Roadmap: Enhancing Business Collaboration with Lotus Software By Michael Sampson, Principal The Michael Sampson Company January 2010 Executive Summary IBM is a major player in the collaboration software market. It offers numerous collaboration software products through its Lotus Software division, has a long track record of delivering collaboration software to the market, and is one of the two titans—Microsoft being the other—in the enterprise market for collaboration software. This report looks at the go-forward strategic role of Lotus Notes and other Lotus software by end-user organizations. The report investigates (and debunks) five common myths about Lotus Notes: 1. Because Lotus Notes is 20 years old, it should be replaced with something more modern. The evidence suggests a different interpretation. 2. IBM is not committed to Lotus Notes. By looking at IBM’s historical commitment to Lotus Notes, a different conclusion is reached. 3. IBM lacks a roadmap for Lotus Notes. By considering the role of a technical roadmap from a vendor, IBM actually does have a roadmap for Lotus Notes. 4. SharePoint will “solve all your problems”. Governance and the business approach is much more critical than the mere technology used, so switching technology without revisiting the non-technology elements will actually only exacerbate any problems. 5. Notes sucks, and it’s all IBM’s fault. IBM bears some fault, but a much greater degree of fault is frequently outside of IBM’s direct control.
