PureBarre.indd 1 1/5/18 3:16 PM he Outback Bowl, presented by Outback Steakhouse and hosted at Raymond James T Stadium, has been recognized as a local treasure to the Tampa Bay area for more than 30 years. Dating back to 1986 when the NCAA awarded Tampa with a yearly college football match up, the Hall of Fame Bowl, brought together athletes and fans from all over the country. The Hall of Fame Bowl would be re-named nine years later, when the Tampa-born, Australian-inspired Outback Steakhouse became the title sponsor of the yearly event. From 1995 until now, The Outback Bowl has earned the title of the longest running sponsorship of a college bowl game, and Tampan couldn’t be more poud. Our own Britt Blume - got the chance to speak with Clearwater Mayor, George Cretekos and President of The Outback Bowl, Jim McVay about the positive economic impacts and boost in tourism that can be attributed to the Outback Bowl.

The Outback Bowl ranks as one of the 40 most popular post-season games and has become a New Year’s Day tradition, celebrated by citizens of Tampa Bay and millions of college football fans tuning in from around the world. Bowl President McVay had this to say about the exposure and the positive impact the bowl has had on our region: “The exposure we’re generating for the Tampa Bay Area is exceptional. This game [The Outback Bowl] is by Brandy Schaeffer seen regionally, nationally, and internationally. These impressions going out about Clearwater Beach, beautiful sunny weather, everybody having a ball, this encourages tourism. That’s

While the Bowl’s ratings have remained high, so have the Bowl’s generous contributions to many colleges and universities. Including the 2018 Outback Bowl, the event has contributed more than 142 million dollars to participating teams and their conference members and $1 billion in economic impact for the region. This number is not only due to the [Bowl’s] plethora of dedicated sponsors, also revenue generated around the Bay Area every winter season. When asked if he thinks we will see people returning in the future after their trip to Tampa Bay, Mayor Cretekos told Blume, “Interestingly, when they had the South Carolina band out, they asked how many people had been here before and at least three quarters of the crowd raised their hands up. So, that tells you that they come back, and that, again, helps us all out.”

Beginning with the mid-December team welcoming festivities and ending with the exciting game itself, the Tampa Bay opens its arms and, encourage’s visitors to enjoy the many events and amenities available to them throughout Tampa, St. Petersburg, and Clearwater. From pep rallies on the beach to parades through Ybor City, team day at Busch Gardens or a nighttime adventure at Channelside, hundreds of volunteers and full-time staff come together in hopes of providing an amazing and memorable experience for all. When asked who is going to win The Outback Bowl, President McVay proudly stated, “The big winner of The Outback Bowl is the Tampa Bay Area. We’re proud of what this bowl game means. That’s why they call The Outback Bowl a Tampa Bay treasure.” There is no substitute. Visit www.flocalmagazine.com or Subscribe to our YouTube channel to watch the full interview!

However, Health Resolution a no matter the unique differences, the fitness and health paths that ARE successful are quite similar and easy to replicate through the design of the proper approach or Plan of Action.

For the first step in that Plan of Action, I recommend you 1 define exactly what being “healthy” means to YOU. Not a magazine, not your neighbor, not even your significant other. So.... Then... What IS healthy to you? Is it in reaching your fitness goals physically? Attaining nutritional balance? Mental clarity? Spiritual connectivity? Or, is it a combination of these things? Achieving these cornerstones of your health is the principle behind your TOTAL wellness — the very ideal that you strive to achieve, and the key to a balanced life. They are the key to living better, longer.

The second step in your total wellness journey requires 2 understanding exactly what you need to DO to achieve those goals.

In order to reach your goals, will you need to burn fat? Build muscle? Increase your cardiovascular health? Rehabilitate an injury? Design goals for an event? Stretch a little further? Attain enlightenment? Once your idea of wellness is defined and you understand what it takes to reach your goal, then the next step is to design small, achievable goals and to set benchmarks for your accomplishments.

While the fitness goals are specific to you — the actual benchmark 3 process is universal. Creating a journal in which to document your nutritional and fitness efforts is the key to proper benchmarking on your path to reaching you goals! I highly recommend taking a photo of yourself in a bathing suit or underwear (you don’t have to show anyone — this is just for yourself) every eight weeks to help you comprehend the results. And when you reach those benchmarks, reward yourself!

Follow this simple plan of action: 1) understand your goals, 2) understand how to quantify your goals; and 3) set benchmarks and reward yourself for reaching those goals. This plan will help you transform yourself into exactly the level of fitness or wellness to which you are aspiring!

And remember, ANY plan — no matter the type, requires commitment and dedication. That’s the fun of it. That’s the uniqueness of striving for a goal and attaining it, designing a challenge and overcoming it. There is no magic pill, there is no shortcut. What there is, is a process that WILL transform your body, mind and total health; and in the course of challenging yourself and achieving success, will not only define your body and mind, but also YOU as a person.
