Committee Member ABSTRACT This instrumental case study sought to explore the relationship between ultra-running and mental health through the lived experiences of a single participant who self-identifies as an ultra- runner. Three research questions were used to explore this relationship; how did the individual decide to participate in ultra-running, what aspects of ultra-running impact the participant’s mental health, and how has engaging in ultra-running impacted the participant’s mental health? The case study utilized three semi-structured interviews, two participant observations, video documentary review, and journaling to answer these questions. A thematic analysis of the data revealed four essential themes; 1) Development of participation, 2) Promotes positive mental health practices, 3) Development of self-identity, and 4) Dependency. The case study had three major findings. First, the participant’s journey to being an ultra-runner developed over time. Second, the aspects of ultra-running that impact the participant’s mental health are: 1) The social community it creates, 2) The structure it requires, 3) The experience of physical deprivation, 4) The amount of time spent in nature, 5) The challenge it creates, 6) The physical feeling it creates, and 7) The ability to use it as a platform for gender equity. Finally, the ways ultra-running has impacted the participant’s mental health are: 1) The creation of an identity that revolves around her engagement in ultra-running, 2) The promotion of healthy mental health practices, and 3) Her dependency on ultra-running. The case study concluded that the participant did not begin to engage in ultra-running in response to her mental health needs but as a product of experiences and positive reinforcements in her life, ultra-running has the potential to be very beneficial to a participant’s mental health through a variety of areas in a participant’s life, and engaging in ultra- running can create dependency in an individual when used as a primary coping skill or an essential part of the participant’s identity. ©2018 by J. Adventure is our way of life, so – after the sad and disastrous 2020 when we were not able to host any of our life-changing events – we are pleased to be fully back in action in 2021! Well, make that almost fully: Due to pandemic travel bans still in place, international participation in our USA-based events is not where we want it and that’s really unfortunate. Badwater 135 is the de facto Olympics of Ultrarunning and the 135-Mile World Championship, so we always want as many nationalities represented as possible. (The inside front cover of this magazine celebrates all sixty-one nationalities which have been represented on the Badwater 135 start line over the years.) Our new six-day stage race across Armenia – Artsakh Ultra – will have to wait yet another year to debut in 2022, two years later than planned. But it will be incredible, the ultimate stage race with six days of world-class trail running through several millennia of incredible culture and history, and across the most dramatic and awe-inspiring landscapes. This year, we are super excited to have brought two virtual races to life, first for the 31 days of January, and then for 16 days in April.

She has experienced the transition, slipping into the new role MR Poovamma (Photo: 2014 Incheon Asian Games @Getty) effortlessly and enjoying the process, too. “It has been a different experience over the past couple of years. Till 2017, I was part of a squad that had runners who were either as old as me or a couple of years older. But now, most of the girls in the team are six or seven years younger than I am,” she says from Patiala. “On the track they see me as a competitor but outside, they look up to me like a member of their family.” The lockdown, forced by the Covid-19 outbreak, and the aftermath have given her the opportunity to don the leadership mantle. “For a couple of months, I managed the workout of the other girls. I enjoyed the role assigned to me,” says the 30-year-old. “We were able to maintain our fitness even during lockdown.” Poovamma reveals that the women’s relay squad trained in the lawn in the hostel premises. “It was a change off the track. We hung out together. It was not like it was a punishment, being forced to stay away from the track and the gym.     SPORTS TIPS SKIING AND SNOWBOARDING INJURIES Tens of thousands of skiers and snowboarders enjoy snowsports every year, however few prepare for the rigorous physical demands that these sports place on the body. Although they can be safe sports, unexpected injuries may occur with improper preparation, varied snow conditions or poor judgment. Many injuries can be prevented by proper physical preparation, suitable and properly adjusted equipment, and common sense. WHAT CAUSES SKIING AND SNOWBOARDING INJURIES? Most snowsport injuries are traumatic, caused by being on dangerous terrain, lift accidents, falls, and collisions. In many instances, fatigue after a long day on the slopes or poor judgment can be blamed for injuries.
