These tasks, demanding under any circumstances, have been made more difficult by Macedonia's proximity to the war in Bosnia.

    99 Chapter Two: Peoples and Populations 2.1 Peoples of Macedonia Macedonians: The contested majority BROAD CATEGORIES OF identification were commonplace in the Ottoman Balkans. A popular nineteenth–century term to describe Islamicised Macedonians was ‘Turks’. Adhering to the Ottoman concept of religion equating nationality the Ottomans increased the number of ‘Turks’ in Macedonia (in their own population data) to justify their continued rule. Similarly, labels were also broadly used when it came to the Christian population, and Christian Macedonians were also categorised as being a part of other ethnic groups. The central dispute in Macedonia at the end of the nineteenth century concerned the national identity of the Christian Macedonian ethnic element. Typically inhabiting countryside villages, they engaged in an agricultural lifestyle. Regarded by the bulk of commentators as constituting the majority of the population, Macedonians were identified by a number of differing labels. Living within a contested territory, Macedonians too came to be a contested people. Greeks, Bulgarians and Serbs labelled Macedonians as Greeks, Bulgarians and Serbs respectively, in accordance with the designs of these three nations to annex Macedonian territory. An overview of the ethnic structure of Macedonia is presented in this chapter, together with population statistics and ethnographic data as promoted by interested parties from the Balkans and from the wider Europe. Ethnographic maps in particular were a powerful tool used by the Balkan states to convince western Europe of the presence of their respective populations in Europe, whilst at the same time a politically motivated contest for religious and educational expansion was being waged in Macedonia.

Ethnicity, language, culture, customs, religion, and geographical factors, together with the urban rural character of the communities determine the collective sense of solidarity and building of national affiliations. Of course, this section should also mention the factor of political mobilization, which has been intensified in certain historical periods. The basis of the identities, which originated in the late Ottoman Millet confessional structure is upgraded with the invention of the Western ideologies, primarily the national ideology. But in many of the Balkan countries, which in fact were constituted on basis of the Christian identity, the Muslims of the same language, cultural and ethnical origin, i.e. the Muslims of Slavic origin, were often excluded. Such examples will contribute to the construction of new forms of solidarity, even new national identities and affiliations.     Gyorgy Lederer [email protected] CONTEMPORARY ISLAM IN EAST EUROPE The successive censuses of socialist Yugoslavia offered different options to its Serbocroatian-speaking citizens who regarded themselves of Islamic tradition or extraction in any sense of this term. In 1948 they could declare their nationality as “Muslim”, in 1953 as “Yugoslav ethnically undetermined”, in 1961 as “Muslim in the ethnic sense”, and in 1971 “Muslim in the national sense”. All these terms excluded the Albanian and the Turkish minorities while they included many atheists.1 This confusion made many believe that Islam was a nationality or a nation. No one expected at that time the dramatic meaning this concept would gain in the 1990s. An oft-quoted though questionable 1985 Yugoslav opinion poll2 gave the following proportions of religious believers: Bosnia-Herzegovina 17 p.c., Macedonia 19 p.c., Kosovo 44 p.c.… so the religiosity of Muslim and other Bosnians was rather low, even by East European standards. The link between Islam(ic tradition) and ethnicity must have been indirect. The two should be clearly distinguished which is not easy in the Balkans for various reasons. Albanians, Bulgarian and other Balkan Turks and Roma have their distinct language, culture, kinship, even physical appearance to some extent, but for Slav Muslims only traditions and the feeling of commonality would have remained if Yugoslavia had survived. Several of the above elements have been affected by these groupings’ understanding of Islam, which is nevertheless a supra-national community and also a spiritual, moral, behavioral, legal, etc. code. In normal circumstances those who find its basic tenets unimportant or anachronistic could hardly be considered as “Muslim” regardless of their ancestry.

    European Scientific Journal June 2018 edition Vol.14, No.17 ISSN: 1857 – 7881 (Print) e - ISSN 1857- 7431 Macedonians of Islamic Religion in the Context of Identity Theories Katica Kulavkova, Academician, Ph.D. Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts (MASA), Republic of Macedonia Doi:10.19044/esj.2018.v14n17p105 URL:http://dx.doi.org/10.19044/esj.2018.v14n17p105 Abstract In line with the theories of variability, fluctuation and instability of ethno-cultural identities, this paper deals with some sensitive issues surrounding the creation of new (sub-ethnic and sub-cultural) micro- identities within one nation, in this case within the Macedonian nation. The research focuses on the initiative for declaring one part of the Macedonian nation, the Macedonians of Islamic religion, to be a separate ethnic group in 2011. It analyses the regional and historical background from which this initiative originated, mostly as an echo of the multicultural strategies and policies in the European and international context. It shows how the unstable politics destabilized the already fragile and fluctuating identity of this group toward an identity of resistance or even heresy, inspite of having preserved their primary Slavic linguistic and cultural identity. The paper argues that the Macedonians of Islamic religion are a part of the Macedonian social, cultural and religious reality and should therefore be recognized as a specific cultural-religious community within the Macedonian national entity. This issue is seen as very important in the present context, since the Macedonian identity is preasured and relativized itself. The paper underlines that the Macedonian national identity is inclusive, layered, more general and complex than its religious factor.
