Perhaps not surprisingly this longitudinal study of behaviours and social outcomes continues to demonstrate the inter-connectedness of so many aspects of human action and, more controversially, suggests that we can do much to predict and divert such behaviours. In her analysis Professor McAra draws together the contributing factors which may promote or enable offending, including poverty, education, upbringing, environment, culture and opportunity, and robustly makes the case for earlier intervention and prevention to divert those young people who are most at risk of becoming ‘offenders’ into more productive behaviour patterns. On the night someone said to me: “That sounds like she is reading the Apex manifesto”; and I have to agree with them.

Full Time 246 Chapter 1 Wembley 1967 S dream starts to new jobs go, even Carlsberg would have struggled to improve on Bobby Brown’s. Appointed A Scotland team manager only two months earlier, on 11 April 1967 he oversaw his team beating England, then reigning world champions, at Wembley, English football’s impressive and emblematic stadium. It was his first full international in charge and England’s first loss in 20 games. To defeat the world champions, Scotland’s most intense and enduring rivals, in these circumstances was an outstanding achievement, like winning the Grand National on your debut ride or running a four-minute mile in your first race. The date is enshrined in Scottish football history as one of its most memorable days. In fans’ folklore, it was the day when Scotland became ‘unofficial world champions’ by knocking England off their throne – and what could be sweeter for a Scottish fan? As Brown said, in his understated way at the time, ‘It was a fairly daunting task for your first game in charge.

The first club outside Ulster was Dublin Association Football Club which was formed in 1883. At the time, the Irish Football Association (IFA) was the governing body. Based in Belfast, it found it difficult to promote football throughout the country. This led to the formation of the Leinster Football Association in 1892 as the game became more popular in the area. However, there was always a feeling among clubs from outside the Belfast area that the IFA favoured Ulster based clubs-especially when selecting sides for international matches. Despite this, it was not until after the 1916 Rising and the rise of Nationalism that southern affiliates, such as the Leinster FA, took an aggressive approach in their dealings with the IFA. The clubs often threatened to break away, and in early 1921, Bohemians, St. James's Gate and Shelbourne all withdrew from the Irish League, though all three sides decided to remain involved in Cup competitions.

MUSEUM INDEX 1 INTRODUCTION/04 2 BEST CLUBS/10 3 BEST FINALS/17 4 BEST PLAYERS/22 5 ROAD TO WEMBLEY/54 1 INTRODUCTION INTRODUCTION Since the competition was founded as the European Champions Clubs’ Cup over half a century ago, only 22 clubs and 515 players have won it. But, in doing so, they and their opponents have left us an incredibly rich heritage of magic moments. You might not be old enough to remember Alfredo Di Stéfano’s Real Madrid, Eusébio’s Benfica, Johan Cruyff’s Ajax or Franz Beckenbauer’s Bayern back in the days when clubs established dynasties by successfully defending the European crown – something no team has yet managed to do since the competition became the UEFA Champions League in 1992. And exactly what is it that sticks in your mind? Is it a micro-second of breathtaking skill like Zinédine Zidane’s sublime volley in the 2002 final? Do you focus on a wider time-span, such as Manchester United’s three-minute comeback in Barcelona in 1999? Maybe it’s not an image at all, but the sheer drama of a penalty shoot-out. Or perhaps it’s an emotion rather than an image. The Museum of Champions offers you memorabilia and images to inspire memories and help you to re-live the special emotions created by the world’s top club competition. CREDITS Designwerk Event Branding and Design act3 Event Production Die Firma Print, Production and Build Hanot GABRIEL 1954 THE Founder It may be a statement of the obvious that founder of the ‘European Cup’ was a man of vision.

Matches – 31 March 1965 – Manchester U 0 Leeds United 1 First Division – City Ground, Nottingham – 46,300 Scorers: Bremner Manchester United: P Dunne, Brennan, A Dunne, Crerand, Foulkes, Stiles, Connelly, R Charlton, Herd, Law, Best Leeds United: Sprake, Reaney, Bell, Bremner, J Charlton, Hunter, Giles, Storrie, Peacock, Collins, Cooper The first clash between Manchester United and Leeds United in the FA Cup semi final of 1965 had ended in a bitter and rancorous goalless draw, with both sides more intent on kicking opponents than seizing the chance of a Wembley place. As Eric Stanger reported in the Yorkshire Post: “Perhaps it is as well there is a replay at Nottingham on Wednesday. At least it will give both sides opportunity to show that they can play good football and redeem themselves for a shabby, bitter FA Cup semi final at Hillsborough on Saturday. There were no goals but there were 24 free kicks for fouls given against Manchester United and 10 against Leeds. Two Manchester players, Stiles and Law, had their names taken and altogether too many players on both sides behaved like a pack of dogs snapping and snarling at each other over a bone.” Leeds manager Don Revie chose to paper over the controversy, saying: “We shall do better on Wednesday now we know what it is all about. Remember this is our first semi final. I was a bit worried at half time but we played much better against the wind and I am sure we can win the replay and get to Wembley.” Despite many fitness doubts on both sides following the bruising encounter, the only change to either team was Denis Law shows the effects of battle after the first game Terry Cooper replacing the injured South African Albert Johanneson on the Leeds left wing.
