As I consider what he means, I walk through the Suva streets to the bus depot. It’s so hot: I’m sticky and uncomfortable. The bus arrives and I clamber on, across the debris of paper bus tickets in the gutter; my too many bags getting in the way, thoughts shut out from the loud beats of the bus. A young girl stares. I smile, too keen. She waits. I turn and look out the window at the harbour clogged with wrecks and foreign ships. I look at the girl again and wait until the space between us opens. Hancock Thesis Committee: Joseph Stanton (Chairperson) Brandy Nalani McDougall Robert Perkinson Keywords: Pastoral, Paradise, Pacific Islands, Hawai‘i, Herman Melville, Charles Warren Stoddard, Mark Twain, Theocritus, Longus ABSTRACT: This aim of this thesis is to deconstruct the etymology of the word “paradise” within the context of early Pacific narratives by popular American authors, and then within today’s tourist propaganda. Fundamental to that process is the imagination of “Pacific Pastoralism,” in which the pastoral tradition is considered as a predecessor to American traditions of describing the landscapes and peoples of the Pacific region, as those descriptions fueled an economy forcibly mapped onto that space. Herein texts are analyzed via close-reading comparisons, historical research, and more lyrical methods such as rhetorical stargazing, echolocation, and narrative technique. While this thesis is indebted to scholars in the fields of American Studies and English literature, it attempts to open space for Pacific Island Studies to epistemologically counter its cultural materialist claims. In total, this thesis is a critique of tourist marketing, which was ferried from antiquity to the Pacific on wooden ships, and today renders beaches little more than golf course sand-traps.     IN MEMORY OF DAVID MCKENNA 08.06.1979 – 12.14.2012 While 2012 was a year of much growth for our team, it also brought tragedy when we lost David McKenna to a fatal car accident on December 14. David was a good friend to many of us, as well as a cornerstone in the foundation of To Write Love on Her Arms. He was the one who took the lead during those first five days spent with Renee, encouraging her and helping her get into treatment. His own life included addiction, which was a powerful factor in his desire to help Renee along a path he had walked himself. The story of those days would eventually be “The TWLOHA Story” with which so many of us connected. During the final years of his life, David also worked tirelessly to bring that story to a new audience, through the film Day One. We remember David now—his struggles and triumphs, his compassion and companionship— and we hope that TWLOHA’s work might continue to touch lives like he did. The Marrs Bar now in its 15 year and The Swan Theatre which first opened its doors to the public a staggering 50 years ago!
