Alsace – an iconic and exceptional destination Alsace is located in the heart of the Grand Est Region, bordering the Lorraine and the Champagne- Ardenne. Its position in the heart of Europe allows Alsace to benefit from a direct proximity with Germany, Switzerland, Luxembourg and Belgium. There are two departments, the Bas-Rhin and the Haut-Rhin which divide the region.

From the north to the south of Alsace, the region is distinguished by 3 cities.

Strasbourg, is the official seat of the European Parliament and numerous European institutions as well as boasting other worthwhile sites. Its cathedral, its districts of the Petite France and the Neustadt, listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites, its architecture and its history can be experienced and visited all year long.

Colmar, the capital of Alsace wines is captivating with the beauty of its historic centre. This rustic and traditional city is enticing for visitors who discover a lavish and well-preserved heritage. Home to a Rhine- land Renaissance masterpiece - the Issenheim altar- piece by Matthias Grünewald, the Unterlinden Museum is a must.

Mulhouse, the European capital of technical museums, is a hub of exceptional museums. Since its creation 20 years ago in Strasbourg, the Ososphère has constantly evolved to change with the times and the city. With a combination of music, ar- chitecture and digital arts, the Ososphère returns today in the Laiterie district where it first came into being. The Ososphère is rolling out from September 2019 to September 2020 by creating 3 Districts : Electronic District, Cosmos District and Gestalt District. Genuine entertainment for everyone. This return to the Laiterie is thus the beginning of a new chapter for the Ososphère and embraces various venues, artists and audiences throughout the year. The Ososphère has a unifying mindset, combining arts, talents and challenges with an openminded and participative approach.

Festival NL Contest > STRASBOURG > 15 to 17 May, 2020

Each year since 2005, this unique event in Europe puts the new urban sports disciplines in the spotlight (rollerblading, BMX, freestyle scooter) but also new and upcoming sports which redefine the appropriation and usage of urban space around three values: passion, sharing and performance. For 4 days, the 1st International Festival of Songs and Lights in Ottmarscheim is the opportunity to celebrate the end of the restoration and preservation work of the abbatial church as well as the 500th anniversary of the death of Maximilian of Habsburg, Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. Program: 8 choirs from the Via Habsburg making over 350 German, Austrian and French choristers 56 musicians from the Symphonic Orchestra of Mulhouse, conducted by Jacques Lacombe to perform an extraor- dinary Carmina Burana 3 outdoor evening representations in the park, with a spectacular mapping on the building (1500 seats/ concert).

Wolfi Jazz > WOLFISHEIM > 24 to 28 June, 2020

Set within the outstanding site of Fort Kléber, the festival welcomes about twenty groups from around the world to play on 2 stages, the Douves Stage, free access in the fort moats, and the Esplanade Stage, for a fee and with a marquee. Built in 1875, this former military fort belonged to the defensive belt of Strasbourg and was the only one to have been fully and permanently occupied by a military unit until 1996. On this occasion, the fortifications are lowered to become open doors towards the world, Africa, the Caribbean … The festival proposes snacks and the P’tits Loups village for little ones with a show, make-up workshops, poney rides, story- telling, initiation to clown art, fabric painting workshop …

International Festival of Colmar > COLMAR > 4 to 14 July, 2020

The 32th edition of the International Festival of Colmar will pay tribute to a music legend, the Israeli violinist Ivry Gitlis. He is not only a musical genius and major figure of his generation, but also an extraordinary violin player and an immense source of inspiration. He is the symbol of a new and more open approach of promoting classical music, and has been contributing to making it more popular for many years now. The concerts will be conducted by Vladimir Spivakov with the Russia National Philharmonic Orchestra and inter- nationally-know soloists, taking place in historic edifices where these magical settings will reinforce the listening intensity: the Koïfus, the Saint Pierre Chapel and the Saint Matthieu Church. www.festival-colmar.com

Décibulles > NEUVE-EGLISE (Val de Villé) > 10 to 12 July, 2020

In 1992, a group of friends decided to create a festive event combining music and beer. The sound decibels were combined with beer bubbles (“bulles” in French) to create Décibulles. Today, it’s the largest current outdoor music festival in Alsace, bringing together 25,000 people for each edition. The stage located on the Chena site welcomes big names from the French and international music scene. Spontaneous music events and street artists entertain people between two concerts, without forgetting the 34 draught beers which are massively consumed!

Scènes de Rue > MULHOUSE > 16 to 19 July, 2020

Purposely mainstream, artistic and upbeat, Scènes de Rue is a festival dedicated to street arts which gives a new understanding of the city through special or grandiose encounters. The goal of this festival is to develop a multi-disciplinary program which harmo- niously combines projects backed both by established artists with inventoried works, but also projects in progress or in the maturing stage being produced by emerging artists. For 4 days, Scènes de Rue takes over the Mulhouse city-centre and offers moments of sharing and encounters, shows for audiences of all ages, but also more challenging performances which question our society regarding the relationships between mankind and cities.

Summer Vibrations – the festival of cheerful music > SELESTAT > 23 to 25 July, 2020

From reggae to world music, rap and funk, this uplifting festival promotes gender diversity, open- mindedness and the variety of audiences. Being ecolo- gically-responsible is key for this festival, an ode to nature which endeavours to spread awareness and calls upon everyone to participate (recycling, respecting the sites, cigarette-butt disposal, carsharing, etc) to reduce its environmental impact as much as possible.

Created 24 years ago by a couple of musicians in Lapoutroie in the Alsace-located Vosges mountains, this festival began growing in Rouffach and over the whole Rouffach Community of Municipalities Pays de Rouffach Vignobles et Châteaux over the summer lasting around twenty days. There are over 100 concerts in the region located all along the Wine Route. It’s a classical music festival ranging from recitals to the philharmonic orchestra and also including some chamber music. One of its original features is to simultaneously propose a festival as well as an international summer academy in a rural setting with concerts of students, meeting with artists, conferences and walks led by musicologists, doctors, stringed instrument makers, workshop-discoveries regarding music professions, etc.

Alsace Wine Fair > COLMAR > 24 July to 2 August, 2020

It was to help rebuild the Alsace economy that the Regional Alsace Wine Fair was created in 1948 in the city-centre of Colmar by its Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Colmar City Hall. Since 1968, it is located in the Parc des Expositions and has become the Colmar Wine Fair. It combines a business fair with its 350 participants, a showcase of Alsace wines with tastings, conferences, initiations and the introduction of the Queen of Wines as well as an eclectic music festival with both national and international artists. The “Coquille”, its open-air theatre with 10,000 seats, is a replica of California’s Hollywood Bowl and there have already been famous singers such as: Johnny Haliday, Indochine, James Brown, David Guetta, Manu Chao and many others.

Au Grès du Jazz > LA PETITE PIERRE > 8 to 16 August, 2020

For 20 years this festival has taken place in La Petite Pierre, located in the heart of the Northern Vosges Regional Nature Park, and is the summer jazz festival not to be missed. The program offers 8 days of concerts in snug and bucolic sites with exchanges, encounters and openings to some other cultures with an oblique reference to world music. The concerts take place on the large stage facing the castle of La Petite Pierre and the Off Program (about twenty free concerts) in other places such as the Jardin des Païens, the Jardin des Poètes, the Relais des Arts, the school square… in addition, for the past 2 years, the “Hors les Murs” which reaches out over the Northern Vosges region in singular places such as on a barge, in a Gothic church, a museum, a covered market … the recipe? Mix together some select choices, invite some leading artists from far-off, give some amateur musicians a place to play, feel the combined magical charm of the music and where it’s played … a reconciliation between nature and heritage.

Summerlied > Ohlungen Forest > 14 to 16 August, 2020

Created in 1997, Summerlied is every two years in the Ohlungen forest (29km from Strasbourg / 8km from Haguenau) and aims to be the music festival of local (Alsace) and world music. The program highlights local music productions speaking Alsatian with all styles (rock, hip-hop, folk, etc) and also welcoming artists from diverse horizons, all having the common factor of defending a heritage (I Muvrini, Hugues Auffray, Stephan Eicher, Thomas Dutronc, among the most recent). Summerlied is the largest festival in northern Alsace with an average of over 20,000 visitors. With its 3 stages and location on the edge of the forest, it also proposes performing arts (games, story-telling, outdoor cinema) which undeniably makes it THE festival to go with as a family. The 2020 program will be disclosed in the spring with already one promise which is anchored in its DNA: Our differences are what create our value.

Festival of Houblon > HAGUENAU > 18 to 23 August, 2020

This high point which before marked the beginning of the hops harvest, today offers a very diverse program. Everywhere in the city, there are shows with traditional music and dances along with rock concerts, African music or salsa, … a very original way to meet the whole world in Haguenau. The Forum des Cultures has 3 top features in the city-centre: the Siesta musical, Quatre- heures évasions and Folklore by night. The Bar du Monde is recognized as the music scene with a DJ every evening after the concerts. At the Theatre, there are 3 “travelling” evenings with dancing and the Halle aux Houblons proposes dinner-shows. Family events and program for young audiences.

The organ in Alsace is an unmistakable and lively reality which goes without saying. Out of the around 10,000 organs inventoried in France, Alsace has about 1900 varied organs reflecting 5 centuries of organ music and builders. Alsace also boasts the presence of a Training Centre for organ-making apprentices in Eschau, an Inter- pretation Centre of heritage in Marmoutier as well as about fifty associations of organ lovers. The Stras’Orgues festival project is in line with this context and aims to promote all organ-related heritage of the Eurometropolis as well as contributing to its preservation. It also wants to reinforce the presence of organs with different media by proposing innovative concert options and also with special events which break away from traditional experiences. Thanks to these original events, it very much hopes to create an interest and touch a wide array of populations. From 23 to 30 August, 2020, Stra’Orgues is inviting both its vocal and instrumental organ partners to come perform as innumerable couples and duos from the most traditional to the most unusual!

Voix et Routes Romanes > ALSACE > 28 August to 20 September, 2020

For the past 27 years, at the end of the summer, this medieval music festival proposes a remarkable tour of Romanesque music within the prestigious setting of major buildings along the Romanesque Alsace Road. For the past few years this program has also been performed on sites in Lorraine. Each year it covers music from the Middle Ages through a framework of specific themes such as the gardens, crusades, pilgrimages, travels, courtly love, medieval celebrations, women in the Middle Ages, the fantastic … 11 private concerts are planned for the Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. www.voix-romane.com

Bibliothèques Idéales > STRASBOURG > September, 2020

Each September, the new Strasbourg cultural year begins with the festival of Bibliothèques Idéales. For around ten days, Strasbourg become the meeting place of bright talents and writers who belong to the French and international literary scene. Bookstores, writers, composers but also musicians, actors and producers eagerly set off to meet the Strasbourg population. Throughout numerous conferences, meetings and events, Strasbourg opens its doors to literature and culture in the wide sense of the term with meetings of writers, debates, accompaniment to music and songs, films … a program free-of-charge with more than 150 writers and artists invited, and over 100 debates, encounters, readings, music events and showings.

Musica > STRASBOURG > September – October, 2020

Created in 1982 in Strasbourg, under the initiative of the Minister of Culture, Musica is one of the largest European festivals dedicated to musical creation. Its objective is to combine the influences of today’s music by having the most notable works from the contemporary repertoire dialogue with those from new-generation artists (multi-disciplinary approaches, digital arts, scripting, etc.). For 15 days, at the beginning of the autumn, there will be around forty events which will take place in the emblematic sites of Strasbourg and its surrounding areas. This pursuit of creation is coupled with a purpose to transmit and reconcile.

Wine Tourism

The label “Vignoble & Découverte“ on the Alsace Wine Route Wine tourism brings together women and men working hard on a daily basis to have people experience unique holidays in all of the wine-growing regions. The Alsace destination of its Wine Route which has over 370 Alsace wine tourism players (86 wineries, 89 accommodations, 65 restaurants and wine bars, 41 activities, 27 heritage sites, 47 events, 12 Tourist Offices and 12 reception areas) is now labelled “Vignobles & Découvertes“. This nationally-recognized distinction gives added value which is reflected on visitors with a privileged welcome, developed serviceability, committed service provi- ders speaking different foreign languages and making good recommendations.

“Évindez-vous“ is a new offer combining wine, biking and tourism. Zeyssolff - immersive 180° film > estate winery > GERTWILLER

The Zeyssolff winery, located in Gertwiller, the village where gingerbread originated, also known for its Gewurztraminer and Klevener de Heiligenstein, created a “wine area” in the former wine cellar. It’s original, cultural and fun, displaying old objects which are set in a contemporary décor which combines scenography, wine-tasting, a shop and a food bar. In April 2020, a new area will open up offering an immersive experience with a 10-minute 180° projection. The Zeyssolff Winery has around twenty, hundred-year-old oak barrels which all have a capacity of 10,000 litres, a vat made in 1897 for the Paris World Fair and it also proposes walking tours of the vineyards. 2 years of work were needed to fully restore the two historic buildings solely using ecologically sustainable and environmentally-friendly materials. The estate converted to organic farming as of 2004 and then to biodynamic farming in 2009. It was certified at Biodyvin in 2015 and has a new storeroom which is 100% dedicated to vinification and wine maturing in barrels as well as a warm and welcoming cellar combining tradition and innovation which is reserved for clients and for tasting the estate-grown wines. The 13 hectares of vines grown on this family estate are divided up into 50 plots and produce 35 vintage wines yearly. Inaugurated in October 2019, the green trail Portes bonheur, le chemin des carrières runs between Rosheim, Boersch, Ottrott and Saint-Nabor at the foot of Mount Saint-Odile and provides 11 km of remarkable walks on foot or by bike. Built upon the former railway, created in 1902, which allowed rocks to be transported from the Saint-Nabor quarries towards the plain, it presently honours the ancient tracks as well as focusing on modern art with works by the Norwegian architect Reiulf Ramstad, including a magnificent belvedere in Saint-Nabor. The home of Albert Schweitzer has just undergone some considerable restoration and extension work, with the inauguration planned for the 4 April 2020. The restoration of the former home did upgrading work ensuring better access and safety for the public and the archives, and the rooms refitted with their original functions. Visitors discover the life and work of Albert Schweitzer, from his childhood in Gunsbach to this international fame from the Nobel Peace Prize, and not forgetting his life as a musician, theologian, philosopher and doctor at the hospital in Lambaréné. The new building is intended to make people aware of this ethic of “Reverence for Life” founded by Schweitzer, the major aim of the association, through temporary exhibits, educational workshops and other events.

The Markstein Bike Park is the 3rd in the Vosges mountains (along with the Lac Blanc and La Bresse). It aims to attract enduro riders and proposes 7 trails with varied levels (2 green runs + 2 blue runs + 3 red runs) offering a range of assorted difficulties and conditions which will allow all “riders”, regardless their level and expectations, to have fun and progress along tracks where natural obstacles take the centre stage. As of 2020, sports events are scheduled (Markstein Enduro on 28 June, Enduro Kids on 18 October, an electric mountain bike event in September) along with initiation or refresher classes being proposed on-site. SlowUp Alsace – 8th edition > CHATENOIS, BERGMEIM, SELESTAT > 7 June, 2020

A not-to-be-missed event of wine tourism in Alsace, it takes place on the first Sunday of June from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. along a circuit closed off to traffic and reserved for pedestrians and cyclists between Châtenois, Bergheim and Sélestat within the ideal setting of the Alsace Wine Route, at the foot of the Haut-Koenigsbourg Castle. Lalique Exhibition “Tableware Art“ > WINGEN-SUR-MODER > Summer 2020

Associated with a certain French way of life, table art has eternally triggered creativity and some prestigious companies have distinguished themselves in this field. The date of the death of Saint Odile has always been fixed on 13 December, 720 … On 13 December 2020 it will mark the 1300 years of her death with a Jubilee for the Mount, an important religious moment for the Church of Alsace for both the region and its neighbouring countries. The symbolic calculation of 1300 days before the 13 December 2020, brings us to 25 May 2017, the solemnity of Ascension … This holiday has been retained to launch the Jubilee with a spiritual program, but also a cultural and artistic one which will reach a crescendo near the key period of the Jubilee 2020 which will take place on Sunday 5 July (Saint Odile of summer) and 13 December (Saint Odile of winter).

3rd edition of the exhibition “Crystals” > SAINTE-MARIE-AUX-MINES > 15 to 16 August, 2020

Organised by the Tellure Mine Park and the Association of Mineralogy Tellure was built on a genuine silver mine from the 16th century, the Saint-Jean Engelsbourg mine. The site includes a panoramic cinema, a moving picture show, a museum with an audioguide as well as a shop and a snack bar. Various events are proposed including an exhibition dedicated to crystals and will take place on the weekend of 15 August with around fifteen participants.

75th anniversary of the Liberation of Alsace

The liberation of Alsace began over five months after the Normandy Landing on 6 June 1944. The city of Mulhouse was liberated on 21 November 1944, Strasbourg on the 23, thus honouring the oath of Koufra: “We swear that we will not lay down our arms until our flag, our beautiful flag, again flies over the cathedral of Strasbourg”. Between the two was the Colmar Pocket from where the Germans could counter-attack. On 31 December, between Bitche and Sarreguemines, Operation Nordwind was undertaken by eight German divisions to recapture Strasbourg. As of 20 January, General de Lattre launched an offensive against the Colmar Pocket. Fourteen allied divisions took part in this battle. On 2 February, the 5th armoured division of General Vernejoul liberated Colmar. On 19 March, the northern part of the Bas-Rhin was liberated for the second time and the German border was crossed. Alsace remembers and commemorates these high moments of its history with the 75th anniversary of the Liberation of Alsace. Since 2019 Alsace Destination Tourism is a member of the Liberation Route Europe, an interna- tional network of commemorations certified as a “Culture Route of the Council of Europe”, connecting the main regions and sites of the Second World War involved by the Liberation of Europe in 1944/45: Belgium, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, Holland, Poland and the United Kingdom.

AC Marriott Hotel & Hotel Residence Inn - 2021 > STRASBOURG

Located in the heart of the new international business district of Wacken, the AC Marriott has moved into the former Maillon. This architectural ensemble will house the headquarters of Puma France and 2 hotels with a same entrance: a 4-star AC Marriott Hotel with 170 rooms and a Marriott Residence Inn with 80 apartments. A rooftop restaurant will provide breath-taking views overlooking the city, the Cathedral and the European Parliament. Opening scheduled for 2021.

The Municipal Baths - end 2021 > STRASBOURG

The revered municipal baths of Strasbourg are getting a total overhaul with the practical renovation proposed by Eiffage Construction. At the end of 2021 the public will discover the municipal baths, enlarged with a garden and outdoor pond. This facility will be open twice as long than before the renovation according to the future business manager Equalia (7 days a week from 10am to 9pm). Additional spa and personal care services (sauna, jacuzzi, salt cave, access to outdoor pool) are also foreseen with distinct prices. An offer or personal care and massage treatments will be proposed by Nuxe. Last but not least an area designed for sport and good health.

>>32 Food Court on the Rhine Port - 2021 > STRASBOURG

Between Strasbourg and Germany, a new district is being developed on the Rhine port, accessible by the tram which runs into the heart of the city of Kehl (Germany). The future Strasbourg food court is being built in the former wine cooperative facilities and will take up 800 m² over the 1st floor of the building which is 12,500 m². The original components of the old wine cellar will be preserved. The rest of the building will accommodate the Strasbourg Museum reserves, as well as cultural events and offices. The old garages and workshops of the Cooperative were restored to welcome, as of 2020, creation areas and artists, the first tenants of the former industrial site renamed the Virgule.

Hotel-Restaurant MGallery - 2021 > COLMAR

The construction of this new 5-star MGallery by Sofitel is in progress and will have 59 rooms and suites over 4 levels, each with an outdoor terrace, 3 conference rooms and a spa of 500 m², a bar and restaurant which will be managed and operated by the 2-star chef Jean-Yves Schillinger.

Revamping of Zoological Museum – 2022 > STRASBOURG

Modernise the collections, improve the welcome facilities and develop the scientific mediation intended for the general public of all ages, such as the objectives of the big construction project underway at the Zoological Museum. After the work, 2600 m² of surface will be dedicated to the museum with 2000 m² for exhibits (compared to 1500 m² today) and 600 m² for the welcome area, schools and educational workshops. In addition, there are the administrative facilities, reserves and logistic spaces, areas for higher education and technical rooms. The 4 exhibition areas will address theme of the animal world, local ecosystems, worldwide biodiversity and nature in the laboratory.

Reopening scheduled for the end of 2022.
