Differentiation of Indian Cultures According to Geographical Areas
DIFFEREXTIATIOX OF IXDIAX CULTURES ACCORDING TO GEOGRAPHICAL AREAS BY DR. GEORGE H. DAUGHERTY, JR. WHILE admitting the basic unity of Indian culture, scientists have discovered well defined variations in different parts of the country. On the evidence of material culture characteristics and archeological finds they have traced a close connection between the environment of a given locale and the culture of the indigenous tribes. Tlie purpose of the present article is to demonstrate first that there are distinct differences in the culture originally found among the Indians living in localities of different environment ; second, that these differences were caused by the environment and reflect it. Three of these cultural areas, already mentioned as the Great Lakes section of the Eastern Woodland Area, the Plains area, and the Southwest area, will be contrasted in the matter of physical environ- ment, material culture of resident tribes, and subject matter of literary expressions of these tribes. Archeological and ethnological, research has divided the Ameri- can continent into several "culture areas", or separate geographical division^. In each of these the climate, topography, fauna, and flora constitute a distinctive environment. Each of these major en- vironmental or cultural areas seem to have produced its own peculiar type of culture among the tribes who lived within its limits. Tribes who left one area and entered another tended to drop their former folk-ways and adoj)t those prevailing in the new environment. The Boston Conservatory, 2007 Committee Chair: Dr. Jonathan Kregor, Ph.D. Abstract The 1918 ballet, Parade, and its music by Erik Satie is a fascinating, and historically significant example of the avant-garde, yet it has not received full attention in the field of musicology. This thesis will provide a study of Parade and the avant-garde, and specifically discuss the ways in which the avant-garde creates a dialectic between the expressiveness of the artwork and the listener’s emotional response. Because it explores the traditional boundaries of art, the avant-garde often resides outside the normal vein of aesthetic theoretical inquiry. However, expression theories can be effectively used to elucidate the aesthetics at play in Parade as well as the implications for expressability present in this avant-garde work. The expression theory of Jenefer Robinson allows for the distinction between expression and evocation (emotions evoked in the listener), and between the composer’s aesthetical goal and the listener’s reaction to an artwork. This has an ideal application in avant-garde works, because it is here that these two categories manifest themselves as so grossly disparate. -

A term in Western music theory with three main applications, all connected with the above meanings of modus: the relationship between the note values longa and brevis in late medieval notation; interval, in early medieval theory; most significantly, a concept involving scale type and melody type. The term 'mode' has always been used to designate classes of melodies, and in this century to designate certain kinds of norm or model for composition or improvisation as well. Certain pheno mena in folksong and in non-Western music are related to this last meaning, and are discussed below in §§IV and V. The word is also used in acoustical parlance to denote a particular pattern of vibrations in which a system can oscillate in a stable way; see SOUND, §5. I. The term. II. Medieval modal theory. III. First, it refers in general to the proportional durational relationship between brevis and /onga: the modus is perfectus (sometimes major) when the relationship is 3: l, imperfectus (sometimes minor) when it is 2 : I. (The attributives major and minor are more properly used with modus to distinguish the rela tion of /onga to maxima from the relation of brevis to longa, respectively.) In the earliest stages of mensural notation, the so called Franconian notation, 'modus' designated one of five to seven fixed arrangements of longs and breves in particular rhythms, called by scholars rhythmic modes. -

THE MODES OF ANCIENT GREECE by Elsie Hamilton * * * * P R E F A C E Owing to requests from various people I have consented with humility to write a simple booklet on the Modes of Ancient Greece. The reason for this is largely because the monumental work “The Greek Aulos” by Kathleen Schlesinger, Fellow of the Institute of Archaeology at the University of Liverpool, is now unfortunately out of print. Let me at once say that all the theoretical knowledge I possess has been imparted to me by her through our long and happy friendship over many years. All I can claim as my own contribution is the use I have made of these Modes as a basis for modern composition, of which details have been given in Appendix 3 of “The Greek Aulos”. Demonstrations of Chamber Music in the Modes were given in Steinway Hall in 1917 with the assistance of some of the Queen’s Hall players, also 3 performances in the Etlinger Hall of the musical drama “Sensa”, by Mabel Collins, in 1919. A mime “Agave” was performed in the studio of Madame Matton-Painpare in 1924, and another mime “The Scorpions of Ysit”, at the Court Theatre in 1929. In 1935 this new language of Music was introduced at Stuttgart, Germany, where a small Chamber Orchestra was trained to play in the Greek Modes. Singers have also found little difficulty in singing these intervals which are not those of our modern well-tempered system, of which fuller details will be given later on in this booklet. -

Songs of Courtship: From Wisconsin’s Ho-Chunk, Pan-Indian, and European-American Immigrant Song and Dance Traditions Recommended for High School This selection of courtship songs represent a range of musical styles from within the Ho-Chunk and early European-American immigrant communities in Wisconsin. Most of these songs were recorded in the early part of the 20th century, between 1920 and 1946. The European-American voices we hear are 2nd and 3rd generation descendants of Wisconsin immigrants who learned these Old World songs from their parents, grandparents and other community members. Where possible, translations of the foreign language lyrics are provided. Altogether, these songs provide teachers and students an opportunity to reflect on the social customs and protocols surrounding courtship from an earlier era, and to reflect on contemporary social norms and behaviors surrounding dating (and breaking up), love, and marriage. Instead of evaluating his philosophy and ideas, Satie created a portrait of Socrates from the most intimate moments Socrates spent with his followers in Plato's dialogues. -

I just head out to make it there in time. It’s close to the center of town, so I don’t have to walk far. I pay my entrance fee and walk in. There are hardly any visitors. The chapel is small and attached to a monastery. The building itself is tall but nothing terribly special. But suddenly I see it: Every inch of wall, floor to ceiling, is painted with a narrative cycle. The first thing I notice is the stillness. I can’t even hear my sneakers on the stone floor. It’s cool inside. Then the glow. The whole room, even the arched ceiling, glows lapis blue from the paint. Inside this still room, my body stills, too. I am in need of sanctuary, and here it is. It feels safe, sacred. It lets me emotionally and intellectually clear my mind, so that I can really look at the frescoes. I’m hardly breathing. My heart rate slows. I can feel my mouth open as I take in the room. ROHAN GUNATILLAKE: Kaywin Feldman grew up in a military family, and her childhood memories are dominated by visits to art museums in the various cities and towns where her family moved. You might say she was destined to become a museum director, and at the young age of 28, she achieves just that. Today, Kaywin presides over the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC. -
