Donna White Prevailing Past July 4th - August 9th, 2008 Reception: Friday, July 4th, 8pm (for members and invited guests only) prevailing past It’s Stampede time. Welcome to Calgary, Canada’s fast growing, oil-rich boom city, Heart of the New West and Home of The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth. If you come by plane, on the drive from the airport you’ll notice oil storage tanks painted with friendly working characters doffing their hats to you. This July, if you drive downtown on 9th Avenue, you might notice a tri-fold billboard with photographs of two women with cowboy hats. As the slats turn, you can see that they too are making a kind of gesture with their hats. And you can see that the hats are not exactly what they seem. The billboard is Donna White’s first project since her recent return to the Calgary area from Grand Prairie, and a stint in Saskatoon where she got her MFA at the University of Saskatchewan. There she made a series of provocative billboards, also of normal-looking women of different ages, who also wore something unusual, in this case strange Elizabethan-looking paper ruffs around their necks. If you went to the Mendel Art Gallery where the 2006 exhibition, Beautiful as well as Brutal, was held, you could see the Cyborg Collars more closely. The lace patterns were virtually tatted by joining digital photographic details of the office buildings at the intersection where the billboards stood. Essentially, the women on the billboards wore the architecture of the buildings where they hypothetically worked. -

It is an exciting time to join Lougheed House as we continue to grow as a cultural hub for Calgary. We are evolving our organization and are looking for an individual interested in being a part of this journey. Lougheed House was built in 1891 and is a Provincial and National Historic Site. Designed by Ottawa architect James R. Bowes for Senator James and Isabella Lougheed, it is one of the earliest surviving mansions of its kind on the Canadian prairies today. Located in the Beltline district of Calgary amid several acres of heritage gardens and green space, the House is also an accredited museum and significant Calgary landmark. It features a regular exhibition program, and hosts events, tours, and learning opportunities for visitors of all ages. COMPANY NAME: Lougheed House Conservation Society POSITION TITLE: Digital Exhibit Coordinator REPORTS TO: Curator, Lougheed House PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Counted among the many Anglo-Métis, or Countryborn, descendants of Scottish or English fur traders and local First Nations women, the Hardisty family rose to prominence as fur traders and officers at some of the earliest Hudson’s Bay Company forts established throughout Canada. Geographically, politically, and economically, the influence of several generations of Hardistys reached incredibly far. Lougheed House plans to develop a virtual exhibit exploring the legacy of the Hardisty family as it relates to different aspects of Canadian history, including the fur trade, settlement in the West, the Hudson’s Bay Company, and Métis history. The exhibition will explore the individual stories of members of the Hardisty family, as well as looking at their collective impact on the country, and the conflicting loyalties they may have experienced as a prominent family of Métis descent. -

25 Avenue S.E. LRT Grade Separation Study Phase One: Education & Issues Scoping Stakeholder Report Back: What we heard Winter 2017 Project overview The City of Calgary is conducting a functional planning study of 25 Avenue S.E. and the Red Line LRT tracks crossing. This study will develop a recommended grade separation plan for the Red Line LRT tracks and 25 Avenue S.E. It will also identify short-term improvements in the study area. The final recommended plan will improve travel through this area for people driving, walking, cycling and taking transit. Phase one engagement overview The Engage Spectrum level for phase one of our engagement for this project is Listen and Learn, which is defined as, “We will listen to stakeholders and learn about their plans, views, issues, concerns, expectations and ideas.” We will listen to and learn from the ideas and concerns of the community, as they relate to the study area. We will learn about community priorities, which will help us develop the evaluation criteria that will be used to assess options for grade separation and short-term improvements. The engagement events and tactics for phase one included: - An in-person open house held on Tuesday, February 28, from 5:00 – 8:00 pm at Repsol Sport Centre. 68 people attended the event. - An online survey was available from February 27 through March 13 at calgary.ca/25avestudy where 45 people provide responses. - The project team also participated in the Inglewood/ Ramsay Project coordination events on March 9 and 11, where we talked with 150 residents over the two nights. -

OPENING Mayor Nenshi called for a moment of quiet contemplation at today’s Meeting. RECOGNITION Mayor Nenshi, on behalf Members of Council, recognized Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth becoming the longest reigning monarch in modern history on 2015 September 09; surpassing the 63 year mark of Queen Victoria. The Mayor highlighted that since being formally conferred with the title of Queen of Canada in 1953, Her Majesty has made 22 official tours to Canada which includes four visits to Calgary. During Her Majesty’s first visit in 1959, she toured Fort Calgary and the Calgary Stampede and while at the Chuck Wagon races the Royal Couple were welcomed by 100,000 Calgarians singing Home on the Range. The Queen’s second visit to Calgary coincided with the Centennial celebrations of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in 1973 and she officially opened the Calgary Stampede. -

The Impact of Sport, Physical Activity and Recreation in Alberta April 2020 Executive Summary: As a society Alberta is undergoing unprecedented changes due to COVID- 19, and as we look both to crisis responses right now and forward to recovery and relaunch strategies in the future, it is imperative that the sport, recreation, and physical activity (SPAR) sector be a foundation of both. Alberta is a hub for world-class services for people of all ages, genders, backgrounds and abilities, and now is a time to draw upon these organizations and community leaders to guide our recovery and ensure equitable access to health for all. Provincial investment in SPAR currently lags woefully behind other provinces, despite the high value Albertans place on being physically active in their daily lives. Renewed investment to build a strong SPAR sector will quickly and significantly aid the economic, health, and social impact of Albertans as the province recovers from COVID-19. SPAR is essential to the wellbeing of Albertans. The sectors builds coping skills and supports social and community connections that build whole population mental and physical wellness The SPAR sector: Creates jobs and is an income generator in Alberta Including both sport and recreation, the SPAR sector contributes as much as 2% to Alberta GDP and supports more than 3.5% of total employment. Provides considerable value to Albertans in their daily lives More than 82% of Albertans believe that sport contributes to an improved quality of life. Some 24% of adults and 59% of children participate directly in organized sport, while sport has the highest volunteer rate and number of volunteer hours of any other organizations in the non-profit sector. -
